The GVRD gas companies are working as a cartel. As far as I am concerned. With the amount of cars on the road (GVRD), the Chevron refinery in Burnaby is producing a surplus of gasoline on its own (55,000bbl per day, 1 bbl = 158.99L) assuming that all of our supply comes from one source. Not to mention the Husky refinery in P.G producing 22,000 to 25,000 bbl per day. Plus the Suncor refineries in Alberta that produce godly amounts there is no way that the price of our gas is driven by shortage. Demand will have remained constant, this weekend is no different than another weekend (Canada).
So local gas suppliers know that the price is going to come down and I think that they have acted as a cartel to keep prices high to keep economic profits high. While i'm on my rant roll, I speculate they are also "testing the market". Seeing what kind of reaction happens when they bring gas to these levels. 1.50 seems to be the point when most people get pissed, and 1.40 seems like relief. Within the coming weeks I believe the price should fall. Somewhere down the road 1.60 will become the point, then 1.70 and etc.
Also in my research their have been 31 refineries closed across Canada in the last 40 years. Hmmm? References:

1. Depends on price of oil. Back when oil was $150 a barrel, gas went up to $1.50 a liter. Oil is now $90 a barrel.....
2. Depends on supply and demand. Less people are driving by themselves and more people are carpooling now so there should be plenty of supply and less demand.
3. Depends on the price the gas was purchased at. When oil prices go up, gas prices go up immediately or the same day. When oil prices go down, it takes at least a week and sometimes they don't even lower the damn price.
4. Depends on speculation. Anyone can make a speculation. I find it funny how one person makes a speculation and gas prices skyrocket because of this speculation.
It's total bull that these gas companies are gouging us. Someone who has the power needs to do something. This price gouging/fixing needs to stop | Dude...it ain't the oil companies this time.
Here's a list of why we pay rigt now 25 cents a litre more than the Canadian average:
1. Carbon Tax-some asinine attempt to make the liberals into the Green party.
2. GVRD road tax-awesome, because we get bridges and roads without tolls for it
3. HST-yeah. Again.
What I don't get is how we take it and take it and take it and bend over for Christy Clark to peg us some more. No one gives a fuck while this province, once again is being driven into the shitter. And people think the answer is putting the dumb fucks that did it the last time BACK in to do it in their own special way.

Friday the prices go up, and by Tuesday the price was at the lowest again (IIRC)
Now, the prices are high after 11 pm, and only start to come down around dinner time.
This morning, gas is at $1.45.5 and I bet there will be stations at $1.41.1 by dinner time.
There's no way these people are not gouging us. No matter how they try to spin it, I just don't believe it.

Well it boils down to business as usual. Supply and demand. This summer, everyone is busting out their beaters, collectables, bikes, cars, etc. I think it would be profitable to actually boost the gas as much as I can before anything else happens because of the sudden demand for gas. Especially summers here start to get hotter and the standard of living is increasing each year, plus immigrants that think gas money is chump money.
Thats my speculation though, I could be wrong

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't carbon tax come into effect July 1st? And aren't they taxing drivers through gas to fund translink?

yes Skytrain like Canada Line was successful, however, they have raised the fare price, possible another one in the future, thus making pointless to take transit and drive instead.

I think most people are not seeing the elephant in the room. Gas prices may seem high when priced in CAD or USD but gas prices hasn't changed much when measured in hard assets such as gold and silver. I believe the rise in gas prices has a lot more to do with (abnormally) high inflation than any other factor (gas prices are increasing throughout the world, not just in BC). I suspect that inflation will pick up pace in the near to mid term (1-5 years) and you know what that means for gas prices. |

Went to the states last week, the pricing at one station was ridiculously dirt cheap compared to the neighboring stations along the way, about a 40 cent difference. That and similar other places (like Domo) I think would give them more business compared to the ones that stick to the standard prices (if people overlook the fact that the quality of the fuel may be worse).
I swear I saw how the prices have been fluctuating by around 3 cents the past couple days, from 149 to ~146, then back and forth again. Are gas prices usually determined by the companies themselves, or is there a specific trend that they follow?

3. HST-yeah. Again. | HST is not a reason why we are getting the recent shaft. Quote:
GOODS and SERVICES that are exempt from the B.C. Harmonized Sales Tax of 12%
These include fuel including gas, diesel and biofuel
How does the BC HST affect Motor Fuel Tax?
As the BC Government has indicated that point of sale rebates on motor fuels and other gas/biofuels will be implemented right away, the provincial portion of the B.C. HST would not apply to motor fuels in the province. This includes all forms of biofuels, aviation fuel, marine diesel, diesel as well as car gasoline.
How does the B.C. Harmonized Sales Tax affect the Carbon Tax?
Like above, the BC Government has indicated that the carbon tax on fuels, diesel and biofuels will not be subject to the new BC HST of 12%. Therefore, the Harmonized Sales Tax will not affect the current Carbon Tax.
| The gov has some hands in this, but the fact that gas prices went from 1.45-1.55(for 1 day only it seems)-1.44 within the span of under a week... how can you say the gas/oil companies aren't behind this?
Yeah gas is expensive. My tank cost $60. And I drive a freakin' Yaris.

^At one point Whatcom stations were consistently cheap, but lately they're 2-3 cents higher than anywhere else in Abby. I filled up for 128.9 today on Mt. Lehman.
