Building a comp for $1000

Hey, what parts can I get for $1000 after tax?
I don't know much about choosing parts and stuff, but I'm going to use this mainly for gaming, browsing, and music.

Looking to build this over the month of June, I already got all the peripherals and the OS, so those don't need to be included.

what games will you be playing?

starcraft 2, diablo, etc stuff along that line, and future games like guild wars 2

i just built one at ncix! haven't bought it yet but will soon.. let me find specs and post it

it's $974 before tax. but that includes the $50 assembly fee so if you want to put it together yourself it'll be cheaper. i also decided to get a 40gb SSD just to put windows and games on it so they load faster. but that's optional you can just use a regular hard drive. the video card is pretty good bang for the buck.. and the i5 is good enough for most things you'll want to do, i don't think i7 is really necessary. plus its unlocked too so you can overclock it if you want.

also debating whether i should get a water cooling system.. any ideas? and maybe a more powerful power supply.

this system should run your games fine.. probably games like battlefield 3 would be tougher on highest settings but i'm pretty sure it'll even run that on medium fine

haha i don't really know much about computers. just kind of learned on the way. i don't really know much about power supplies and all that. which other one should i go for then?

anyone here have any experience with used parts?
how would i test it to see if it even works? :suspicious:

400W is plenty for that setup. I don't understand why you'd choose SB over IB though. And there's no reason to get a K processor when you're not overclocking. (based on your motherboard, psu, and cooler choices, you won't be)

by the way after swapping in skinnypup's parts total is now $934 before tax. even cheaper!

Instead of the 40GB SSD, I would get a 32 or 50GB cache drive such as OCZ Synapse or Crucial Adrenaline. Or at the very least, if the 40GB is cheap, set it up as a cache drive, not an install drive. I am about to test Intel's cache vs the 2 I mentioned, they work differently. I should have the results in a few days.

The reason the cache drives are faster is because they are overprovisioned. The more flash an SSD has, the faster it is. So the 50GB Crucial actually has 64GB onboard, and will be as fast as a 64GB drive. The 40GB intel has 40GB of flash (or maybe a bit more, you'd ahve to look it up). The 32GB OCZ is actually sold as a "64 GB" on the label, but you only have access to 32GB of it. It is still as fast as a 64GB drive though, and 32GB is sufficient for caching.

I'd get a WD Blue over a Barracuda. 3 year warranty vs 2 year, and made in Thailand vs China

Like I said, the 64GB Synapse is actually a 32GB drive. The Crucial is probably a better deal, I start testing it tonight

Comes to a total of
$872.65, saved $120 (price matched everything lol)
could get some cooling with the extra money for overclocking
and if 600 watt isn't enough, i could throw in another $10 for the 700 watt

^ looks good but you'll want SSD or a 7200rpm HDD...otherwise that green drive is gonna bottleneck the shit outta everything you have.

For HDD it's fine to go with SATAII...SATAIII 6Gbps is only useful for SSD
