Building a comp for $1000

Hey, what parts can I get for $1000 after tax?
I don't know much about choosing parts and stuff, but I'm going to use this mainly for gaming, browsing, and music.

Looking to build this over the month of June, I already got all the peripherals and the OS, so those don't need to be included.

Thanks :fullofwin:

CP.AR 05-24-2012 07:29 PM

what games will you be playing?

J.C 05-24-2012 08:39 PM

starcraft 2, diablo, etc stuff along that line, and future games like guild wars 2

Shorn 05-24-2012 08:50 PM

i just built one at ncix! haven't bought it yet but will soon.. let me find specs and post it
edit: here it is

1 x PC Assembly and Testing With 1 Year Limited NCIX System Warranty (PRE-CONFIG WIN. OS If Purchased)
PC Assembly & Testing does not include servers and requires an additional 4-5 business days to ship once all parts are in stock. NCIX will install aftermarket heatsinks or pre-filled CPU liquid coolers. 1 Year Limited Warranty on installed system parts.
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB 3.5IN 16MB Cache SATA3 Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
1 x Intel Core i5 2500K Quad Core Unlocked Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Sandy Bridge 6MB
1 x Intel 320 Series GEN3 40GB 2.5IN SSD SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive OEM
1 x Please Use The Heatsink Included With My CPU -NOT Available With OEM Processors
1 x Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV mATX LGA1155 H61 DDR3 1PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Video Sound Motherboard
1 x ASUS DRW-24B1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer OEM Black
1 x Corsair Vengeance Blue Lowprofile 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit
1 x AMD Radeon HD 6870 900MHZ 1GB GDDR5 4.2GHZ PCI-E 2 X DVI HDMI 2 X Mini Display Port
This video card is available only as part of a custom-built NCIX PC system.
1 x Coolermaster Haf 912 Black Mid Tower ATX Case 4X5.25 1X3.5 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB Sound
1 x Corsair CMPSU-400CX 400CX 400W ATX 12V 30A Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan

it's $974 before tax. but that includes the $50 assembly fee so if you want to put it together yourself it'll be cheaper. i also decided to get a 40gb SSD just to put windows and games on it so they load faster. but that's optional you can just use a regular hard drive. the video card is pretty good bang for the buck.. and the i5 is good enough for most things you'll want to do, i don't think i7 is really necessary. plus its unlocked too so you can overclock it if you want.

also debating whether i should get a water cooling system.. any ideas? and maybe a more powerful power supply.

this system should run your games fine.. probably games like battlefield 3 would be tougher on highest settings but i'm pretty sure it'll even run that on medium fine

400W psu? hmm interesting. :suspicious:

CP.AR 05-24-2012 09:32 PM

^ +1....

:suspicious:
though sandybridge i5s are pretty fuel efficient

Shorn 05-24-2012 09:58 PM

haha i don't really know much about computers. just kind of learned on the way. i don't really know much about power supplies and all that. which other one should i go for then?

J.C 05-24-2012 09:59 PM

anyone here have any experience with used parts?
how would i test it to see if it even works? :suspicious:

400W is plenty for that setup. I don't understand why you'd choose SB over IB though. And there's no reason to get a K processor when you're not overclocking. (based on your motherboard, psu, and cooler choices, you won't be)

Verdasco 05-24-2012 10:07 PM

i am shocked to see how efficient computer parts are these days... ole the good ole 8800gt that power sucked life LOL

sorry i don't know that much about computers.. what does SB and IB mean?

and yeah probably not going to overclock.. i just chose it on a friends recommendation anyways. i have no idea what most of the specs and acronyms mean. so should i pick the 2500 instead then? it's only about $12 bucks difference on ncix so i thought i might as well go for the K.. or am i confusing this with something else :okay:

lilaznviper 05-24-2012 10:43 PM

SB = sandy bridge IB = ivy bridge

SkinnyPupp 05-24-2012 10:57 PM

Get this CPU instead

Intel Core i5 3550 Quad Core Processor LGA1155 3.3GHZ Ivy Bridge 6MB Retail - Intel - BX80637I53550

Get this video card instead

EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Fermi 850MHZ 1024MB Superclocked GDDR5 PCI-E 2.0 2XDVI-I Mini-HDMI Video Card - eVGA - 01G-P3-1463-KR

J.C 05-24-2012 11:05 PM

my thread got jacked lol

SkinnyPupp 05-24-2012 11:08 PM

We are helping you, isn't that the reason you posted this build?

J.C 05-24-2012 11:11 PM

^ yeah, sorry

so replace the parts that you posted out of shorn's and its good to go? :D

by the way after swapping in skinnypup's parts total is now $934 before tax. even cheaper!

SkinnyPupp 05-24-2012 11:18 PM

Instead of the 40GB SSD, I would get a 32 or 50GB cache drive such as OCZ Synapse or Crucial Adrenaline. Or at the very least, if the 40GB is cheap, set it up as a cache drive, not an install drive. I am about to test Intel's cache vs the 2 I mentioned, they work differently. I should have the results in a few days.

The reason the cache drives are faster is because they are overprovisioned. The more flash an SSD has, the faster it is. So the 50GB Crucial actually has 64GB onboard, and will be as fast as a 64GB drive. The 40GB intel has 40GB of flash (or maybe a bit more, you'd ahve to look it up). The 32GB OCZ is actually sold as a "64 GB" on the label, but you only have access to 32GB of it. It is still as fast as a 64GB drive though, and 32GB is sufficient for caching.

I'd get a WD Blue over a Barracuda. 3 year warranty vs 2 year, and made in Thailand vs China

Shorn 05-24-2012 11:25 PM

how's this one?
OCZ Synapse Cache 64GB 2.5IN SATA3 SandForce SF-2281 SSD Solid State Disk Flash Drive - OCZ Technology - SYN-25SAT3-64G

the smallest NCIX sells is 64GB.. is that overkill?

actually found this one too: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=69...Y&promoid=1260

cheaper.

SkinnyPupp 05-24-2012 11:45 PM

Like I said, the 64GB Synapse is actually a 32GB drive. The Crucial is probably a better deal, I start testing it tonight

J.C 05-24-2012 11:45 PM

i used my very minimal knowledge of computers and i came up with these

Zalman Z9 Plus Case w/ Fan Controller
LG SuperMulti 24x DVD Writer, SATA, Black, OEM
AMD MEMORY Performance Edition 8GB PC3-12800 CL8 DDR3 SDRAM Kit
Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green 5400rpm SATA III w/ 64MB Cache
MSI Z77A-GD65 w/ DDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 3-Way SLI / CrossFireX
Intel Core™ i5-3570K Processor, 3.40GHz w/ 6MB Cache
MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDMI
Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 600 Watt Power Supply

Comes to a total of
$872.65, saved $120 (price matched everything lol)
could get some cooling with the extra money for overclocking
and if 600 watt isn't enough, i could throw in another $10 for the 700 watt

twitchyzero 05-25-2012 11:55 AM

^ looks good but you'll want SSD or a 7200rpm HDD...otherwise that green drive is gonna bottleneck the shit outta everything you have.

For HDD it's fine to go with SATAII...SATAIII 6Gbps is only useful for SSD

You might as well use the rest of your budget and get an SSD as your os/app drive and the 1TB as storage.

J.C 05-25-2012 03:05 PM

My friends told me not to get a green drive

And what is a ssd sorry i dont know much

But i really dont need that much space
Im only using about 300gb on my laptop
