(CNN) -- At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said.

The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said.

Though early reports had suggested there may have been more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any other gunmen.

The wounded officer, a 20-year veteran, was in surgery Sunday afternoon after being shot multiple times, but was expected to survive, Wentlandt said. He was sent to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, after a 911 call about 10:25 a.m. (11:25 a.m. ET).

Carolyn Bellin, a spokeswoman for Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, said one of three men brought there from the incident was in surgery early Sunday morning, while another was in the surgical intensive care unit. The third was being evaluated in the emergency room. All three were in critical condition.

The temple has a congregation of 250 to 400, according to its website.

"I just want to say this temple was built a number of years ago and there have never been any problems with this temple," Oak Creek Alderman Dan Jakubczyk said. "They've been a plus to this city and to my district."

One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal Sentinel that based on communication with people inside the temple, the shooter was a white male in his 30s.

I saw the headline and told my parents. Words can't describe the look on their face. Totally upsetting.

Hopefully the American media will spend the time to educate the American public that Sikhs are not in any way related to perceived threats of terrorism from the Middle East.

It's a little early for me to speculate, but I can't even fathom how fucking dumb this guy must have been to go into a Sikh temple and think he's doing something patriotic.

I am eager to CONFIRM the ethnicity of this shooter...I want to hear that he's white even though I already know he's going to be. I anticipate people providing reasoning for what happened and explain how 9/11 has caused anger and resulted in confusion for many Americans. I wish this little *ck*er was still alive so I could see him and watch him suffer for the rest of his life. Instead, he was put out of his misery and really didn't have to face any consequences...To a person like this, death is merely an easy way out and is probably what he wanted.

I wonder if American's will accept this act as terrorism? What's the difference between this an 9/11 apart from the scale? Assuming the shooter is white, he has successfully managed to create fear amongst Sikh's in the U.S. and use targeted violence against a particular religious group.

And like already mentioned in this thread, I think the shooter thought he was targeting Muslims because most Americans don't know the difference between a Sikh or Muslim when they see someone wearing a turban. My uncles own gas stations in Dallas and they wear turbans and I always worry about their safety even though they've said they feel safe but I think you're an easy target down south if you wear a turban. This shooting will shed some light on the Sikh religion in the US and I hope the two elected Punjabi Governors, Nikki Haley & Bobby Jindal, will step up and speak out and educate Americans on the Sikh religion.

It got labelled "domestic terrorism." What's messed up is how all or most of the witnesses are saying there were more than one (i think 2) gun men and the police are saying it was only one.
CNN reported that "these are not muslim but sikh hindus." No idea what thats supposed to mean but damn, figure it out. It's sad how 9/11 has made the lives of many sikhs in america a nightmare.

Supposedly the shooter was white, large with a bald head and witnesses still claiming they saw another shooter, no idea why so many witnesses would claim there was a second shooter if there wasn't one. And interesting that the cop that was shot was ambushed by the shooter, looks like the guy knew the floor plan of the temple.

It's too late for gun control in America imo. There's almost enough guns in the US for every citizen so gun control will accomplish nothing. If a criminal or nut job wanted a gun he/she would be able to obtain one without any issues even with strict gun control laws.
