7 dead at a Sikh temple Wisconsin

Shooters also dead.

(CNN) -- At least seven people, including a gunman shot by a police officer, have been killed in an attack on worshippers at a Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said.

The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Investigators who picked through the building afterward found four bodies inside the temple and two other victims outside, plus the gunman, Wentlandt said.

Though early reports had suggested there may have been more than one attacker, he said officers had not identified any other gunmen.

The wounded officer, a 20-year veteran, was in surgery Sunday afternoon after being shot multiple times, but was expected to survive, Wentlandt said. He was sent to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, after a 911 call about 10:25 a.m. (11:25 a.m. ET).

Carolyn Bellin, a spokeswoman for Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, said one of three men brought there from the incident was in surgery early Sunday morning, while another was in the surgical intensive care unit. The third was being evaluated in the emergency room. All three were in critical condition.

The temple has a congregation of 250 to 400, according to its website.

"I just want to say this temple was built a number of years ago and there have never been any problems with this temple," Oak Creek Alderman Dan Jakubczyk said. "They've been a plus to this city and to my district."

Manic! 08-05-2012 11:20 AM

One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal Sentinel that based on communication with people inside the temple, the shooter was a white male in his 30s.

At least he could aim. Unlike that batman fellow.

I saw the headline and told my parents. Words can't describe the look on their face. Totally upsetting.

Hopefully the American media will spend the time to educate the American public that Sikhs are not in any way related to perceived threats of terrorism from the Middle East.

It's a little early for me to speculate, but I can't even fathom how fucking dumb this guy must have been to go into a Sikh temple and think he's doing something patriotic.

Guns don't kill people. Dumb people do. Too bad the US is full of ignorant dumb fucks.

Sorry, a little angry right now.

I am eager to CONFIRM the ethnicity of this shooter...I want to hear that he's white even though I already know he's going to be. I anticipate people providing reasoning for what happened and explain how 9/11 has caused anger and resulted in confusion for many Americans. I wish this little *ck*er was still alive so I could see him and watch him suffer for the rest of his life. Instead, he was put out of his misery and really didn't have to face any consequences...To a person like this, death is merely an easy way out and is probably what he wanted.

I wonder if American's will accept this act as terrorism? What's the difference between this an 9/11 apart from the scale? Assuming the shooter is white, he has successfully managed to create fear amongst Sikh's in the U.S. and use targeted violence against a particular religious group.

RIP to all the victims of this massacre.

PS - I feel super excited for my move down to Washington next Saturday. As nervous as I already was with racism and being a CLEAR minority, this only puts me over the top on the anxiety scale.

Someone has to stop them, even if it means completely getting the ethnicity of alleged terrorists wrong.

RIP to the victims, and the shooter was an ignorant spineless piece of shit.

I'm actually glad the cops killed this fuck, I didn't want to hear a sob story about how this guy had mental illness and let the case drag on for years.

And like already mentioned in this thread, I think the shooter thought he was targeting Muslims because most Americans don't know the difference between a Sikh or Muslim when they see someone wearing a turban. My uncles own gas stations in Dallas and they wear turbans and I always worry about their safety even though they've said they feel safe but I think you're an easy target down south if you wear a turban. This shooting will shed some light on the Sikh religion in the US and I hope the two elected Punjabi Governors, Nikki Haley & Bobby Jindal, will step up and speak out and educate Americans on the Sikh religion.

Everyone is automatically assuming just bc he's white that he's doing it on racist reasons, maybe he's just a whacko, the kids who killed others at columbine school all those years ago - whackos, this guy - whacko, maybe this guy chose a temple for strategic reasons (high number of ppl in small area, guaranteed)

Either way, the guy was a douche and a whacko - put ur efforts on mourning the dead, not guessing whether a doche whacko is a racist or not

Much like how u are assuming Americans are all ignorant racists, aren't u being just as prejudice?

If ur family feels safe, live and let live - I think ur as much affected by media BS as some of the ignorant db's in the states, in Canada, in Europe - everywhere

I really don't think most ppl in the states care about muslims, Indians, Canadians, anyone, they go about their life like everyone else - media will lead u to believe something else, but media in north America is terrible

its stupid how americans believe that gun control isn't an issue after all these shootings

RIP

van_city23 08-05-2012 01:52 PM

It got labelled "domestic terrorism." What's messed up is how all or most of the witnesses are saying there were more than one (i think 2) gun men and the police are saying it was only one.
CNN reported that "these are not muslim but sikh hindus." No idea what thats supposed to mean but damn, figure it out. It's sad how 9/11 has made the lives of many sikhs in america a nightmare.

Rasism is never directed toward white people, oh no.... You are just like the rasists you hate. Being white I was the visible minority at my high school and don't think for a second that I didn't get singled out because of that so you can keep your white hate to yourself. It doesn't matter what culture they are from, it comes from everywhere

Harvey Specter 08-05-2012 02:07 PM

Supposedly the shooter was white, large with a bald head and witnesses still claiming they saw another shooter, no idea why so many witnesses would claim there was a second shooter if there wasn't one. And interesting that the cop that was shot was ambushed by the shooter, looks like the guy knew the floor plan of the temple.

It's too late for gun control in America imo. There's almost enough guns in the US for every citizen so gun control will accomplish nothing. If a criminal or nut job wanted a gun he/she would be able to obtain one without any issues even with strict gun control laws.

Law markers visited the temple last year over safety concerns in the Sikh community;

Quote:

Lawmaker, D.A. Visit Sikh Temple in Oak Creek - Oak Creek, WI Patch

State Rep. Josh Zepnick and District Attorney John Chisholm visited the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, 7512 S. Howell Ave., on Sunday to discuss public safety issues in the Sikh community.

Satwant Singh Kaleka, president of the Sikh Temple, requested the meeting after the July 4 melee in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, according to a news release from Zepnick's office. Those incidents included the looting of at least one Sikh-owned business.

Singh Kaleka told local officials that what was seen in Riverwest has become too common at gas stations and convenience stores owned by members of the Sikh community. Many businesses and workers have been the victims of robberies and vandalism, he said.

Sikh Indians, because of religious tradition, wear turbans to cover their uncut hair and have longer beards. They are often mistaken for Muslims and have been the targets of racially-motivated crimes by anti-Muslim people and groups, as evidenced by the epithets shouted at them, according to the news release.

Chisholm and Zepnick spoke to the congregation on Sunday, expressing support of the Sikh community's concerns and pledging to work to improve safety.

"The Sikh community is a strong and positive force within Milwaukee's diverse ethnic population," Zepnick said. "It's unacceptable that they, or any law-abiding business owner, be the target of what appears to be an escalating pattern against certain businesses and segments of the population."

Zepnick, a Democrat from Milwaukee, also said he would introduce legislation that would increase penalties for crimes committed on the premises of gas stations. Oak Creek's state representative, Republican Mark Honadel, has also called for harsher penalties for perpetrators of mob-like attacks.

"My hope is that this just the beginning of an open dialogue that will ... help make our neighborhoods and streets safer," Zepnick said, "as well as ensure the safety of people working in any public-serving business."

You're right, I'm sorry you were singled out and are a victim because you're white. Sorry for being racist.

This isn't a sob story about you and your experiences in high school kiddo nor is it an opportunity for you to speak about how white people are victims of racism and prejudice. Yes, racism happens to white people, but who cares right now. That's NOT what this thread is about. It's about ignorance towards Sikh's in America and the consequences of this ignorance which we have seen unfold today.

Bro, best to ignore the stupid comments in this thread or it'll veer into a discussion that we really don't need at this time.

Sikhs have been targeted ever since 9/11 in the states moreso than Muslims I daresay since the Turban is an automatic signal for the dumbasses

Well... that's not entirely true... after all terrorists are still celebrated during the Vaisakhi parade within communities hell right here in Surrey even

but I get your point and imo America should be educating their citizens that 99% of Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus, etc aren't a threat to them at all but that's not what America wants they need an "enemy" ever since their beginning it was the Natives then the British, the Germans, the Russians, The Commies (cuba, north korea, vietnam, etc), then Muslims and it would be too much trouble to educate on the particulars; they need an enemy to distract the citizens and keep em controlled
