NEW YORK (AP) — Police shot and killed a man they say lunged at them with a knife in a confrontation that began in Times Square and drew officers and spectators on a chase that ended with shots fired near one of New York's most heavily touristed areas.
The encounter played out Saturday around 3 p.m., when officers approached a 51-year-old man they say appeared to be smoking marijuana near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, in the heart of Times Square.
The man became agitated, pulled out an 11-inch knife and began to put a bandanna on his head, police said. He refused repeated orders to drop the weapon and began backing down the avenue, continuing for a number of blocks and drawing many officers into a slow-speed pursuit that took them south of Times Square.
According to the police account, officers pepper sprayed the man six times but he held onto the knife throughout the seven-block pursuit. At West 37th Street, he lunged at police and two officers shot him in the torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
Witnesses recalled a chaotic scene in which some bystanders took cover, while others began following the procession down the avenue in an attempt to capture cellphone video of it. On video obtained by NY1 cable news station, a number of officers, guns drawn, can be seen pursuing the man as he appears to skip down Seventh Avenue.
"He was swinging at people as he ran," Jobby Nogver, a 17-year-old visiting from Boston, told The New York Times. Nogver watched as police surrounded the man and fired. "I can't tell you how many shots," he said.
Priscilla Rocha, a tourist from Brazil, was visiting Times Square with her husband when they saw the confrontation.
"I almost had a heart attack," she told the Times. "Everyone started running."
Looks like the guy ran at the cop with the knife after being cornered by the cab and NYPD car infront of the jewlery store. Cop freaks out and unloads all his rounds and other cops joined in to.

Could they have not just shot him in the leg to begin with?
Unfortunately cops are trained to put bullets in the torso when needed. All the gun training is pretty much holster to "disable suspect" shots if I am not mistaken. The fact that they shot that many shots is cause for concern. I can't tell if the whole fact that basically every event in the world is caught on camera makes it seem worse than it is, or if the world has just rapidly become more violent as of recent.
I wonder why they didn't taser him? Maybe they couldn't get close enough...

I would speculate, the failure of a taser to stop a knife-wielding man previously in New York contributed to the choice to not use one in this case.

A knife-wielding man in Upper Manhattan was fatally shot by the police early Sunday after ignoring repeated demands to drop the weapon and enduring a strike from a Taser gun, the police said.
After the man, Emmanuel Paulino, 24, tore the Taser’s electric probes from his body, two officers fired nine shots at him, the police said. Mr. Paulino was pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian/Allen hospital.
Police officers are instructed to aim for center mass," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne explains. "You are looking to stop the individual, and that is the largest target." Center mass means the "head and torso," and a former commander of the NYPD's firearms training section says, "You can’t just shoot to aim for a leg or an arm; it just doesn’t work... Annie Oakley does not exist."

Hello sir. I see you're brandishing a weapon, a threat to the safety of the law abiding citizens round you.
Oh, I now see that you intend on killing me with said weapon. I have no doubt in my mind that you want to end my life.
Let me direct my firearm in these mere seconds that I have to defend myself toward your leg in the hopes that you're not high enough or angry enough to continue lunging at me even though I've just put a bullet in you.
I certainly hope while I'm concentrating on shooting you in the leg that doesn't cause me to lose my situational awareness and open myself to further danger.

If I understand it right, in Canada if a man with a knife is trying to stab you and you shoot him, you still go to jail because your weapon was greater.
In America if your acting crazy (specially a minority) with a none lethal weapon roaming the streets, police killings are justified and not questioned in the media.

Fair enough. I just thought that it could've been possible to have brought him down without killing him, but I overlooked the fact that they sprayed him with pepper several times.

damn... hard to see anything from watching any of those 3 videos.
Couldn't see what was being shot. Just heard the gun firing. Definitely overkill if all those bullets hit.
Actually, if those bullets all hit, I'm more surprised he even made it to the hospital instead of being pronounced dead on the spot.

well justified or not, i'd have to say he deserved it. If you are stupid enough to charge at cops with an 11 inch knife, you're pretty much asking for it. In such a high traffic area, if he was capable of pulling out a knife, who knew what he would do next, take a hostage maybe. I don't care how the media is going to turn this one, but if you're acting like a fool then be ready to take the consequences. If I was a cop and had a crazed man charge me and my co-workers with a knife, I'd shoot him too. Our lives > what the media thinks
