I think people overestimate their spending in their retirement. It's even worse when they're over 65 - 70. Mom can't do any activities aside from walk. Can't travel without sons going with her. So expensive tastes because she never ate out her whole life. Do you think $700K @ 4-5% withdrawal ($28-35K) CPP / GIS ($20K) is overkill for your mom? That's almost $48 - 55K a year with no rent costs. My mom hardly spends more than $1k/year in total costs including pptax and utilities.

Same goes for material goods. Probably even more so.

It’s $500 a year but any star alliance lounge, priority security line, free Premium boarding, free checked bags, free companion passes etc.

My buddy who has the card with nexus walks right through almost every security line in N/A, necer hassle boarding or with bags, no lounge blackouts

Might not get “value” persay but the stress it alleviates has been tempting for that alone

Funny how I was talking to an old buddy recently about this very same topic. Both of us used to be into sports and cars in our (much) younger days, and he was arguably the better athlete and more adventurous car person. But now he is acknowledging how he hardly has any enthusiasm for anything anymore. Financially, he is in a very comfortable position -- probably one of the most wealthy person that I have a direct friendship with, but it just doesn't seem like he is enjoying the ride all that much anymore.

I have this card, ive been using it for almost a year and id say its totally worth it.

First the aeroplan sign up bonuses are insane. over 100k in points, which basically gives you a free trip to asia

Secondly, you get unlimited air canada lounge access but you only get star alliance lounges once you hit over 50k on Aeroplan member. If youre a measily 25, or 35k member, you dont get those star alliance lounges.

The companion pass isnt free, you gotta spend 35k a year on that credit card to get the companion pass. Also that companion pass basically works like this. if you buy an airfare (economy only) from Vancouver to Shanghai for 2k, the companion pays $399 (cheaper if you use companion pass to fly domestic or within north america) to fly with you. You only get one a year, and you get it a year after you join the credit card.

So yes, quite a lot of perks, and its worth the solid 500 bucks a year.

They have a few international lounges in choice cities like Frankfurt, Shanghai, and Tokyo. You can access those as well.

P.s. most importantly its metal. you can use it to cut coke/fent or throw it at a nearby peasant like a ninja star. If you chuck it hard enough it might even injury said peon.

How do people pay for these kinda stuff? A 1-carat Cartier was 10k+ 15yrs ago. And it goes up exponentially from there. I remember the Cartier sale in Chicago showed us a 10-carat IF D diamond ring that goes for half a mil, and was even asking where we lived as maybe there's something they could do to avoid the crazy sales tax in IL.

Looks like you get Priority Pass membership, so you would still have access to those lounges. The ones at TPE look pretty nice.

ohhh i guess they changed it those bastards. But anyways, these lounges arent really worth it. Especially domestic. Priority pass is quite expensive and not a good deal as it has a per-use fee. If you wanted priority pass for sure go up to Amex Platinum as you get unlimited priority pass access. Only prob is platinum annual fee is a bit higher and if you are dedicated to Aeroplan like i am, you get less earnings on your card.
