Well, isnt that pessimism the same reason why Vancouver is the only major city in North America without a highway running through it's city center (cause residents voted it down many decades ago)? and therefore why it takes people from Surrey 10 years to get downtown cause they have to drive through 200 intersections?

As annoying as it is commuting to downtown due to the lack of freeway style infrastructure into the core, I'm happy we decided way back when to not go the route of Seattle or other American cities.
The walkability, bike-ability is absolutely horrible in these American cities that have freeways running through the entire downtown/edge.

I can't imagine where the Knight highway or #1 would connect all the way to downtown without causing traffic because it's still 2-3 lanes.
Ppl bomb grandview highway and knight street at 70-80km anyways, it's a highway with some traffic lights

I still wonder why they cut down Nanaimo from 2 lanes and turned it one lane, especially if they building apartments on Nanaimo now |

While I don’t mind it as I live right where they’ve created all these bottle necks, all it’s done is force people onto my street and other side streets speeding around to avoid nanaimo. I’m honestly surprised some kid hasn’t died or there hasn’t been a terrible accident on the side streets speeding around
I’ve intentionally stepped out in front of vehicles speeding to give these fucking clowns a wake up call, speeding like 70-80 between stop signs a block apart, fucking idiots

^ I wouldn't play that game since it's no fault insurance now so you can't sue. If you're the one driving though |

If you get hit while stepping out between a vehicle, you would be deemed at fault.
Happened to my MIL where a pedestrian stepped out in front of her while she was driving, the pedestrian tried to sue but all they did was spend lawyer fees and failed.

The walkability, bike-ability is absolutely horrible in these American cities that have freeways running through the entire downtown/edge. | Maybe I do feel "a little" sorry that people that commute from Surrey dont get a highway into DT van, but there are a TON of people between Surrey and Vancouver who aren't required to have a ridiculous commute and it's honestly not that bad if you know which hot spots to avoid.
It's a trade-off that exists in every city, either pay the prices to live close to downtown, or pay with your time commuting... or don't work DT. An extra 5km of congested highway isn't going to make much of a difference for a commuter, but that extra 5km of livable city makes a huge difference for all the people in between.

The city really should've built commuter or an express skytrain out to Surrey.

Do people even work dt anymore? Don't you RS baller $250k+ all work from home. I thought dt has been a crack head filled area since the pandemic. All the people who had money cashed out during Corona and bought bigger places in the suburbs, what's why everyone commuting. You're not gonna go back into a 400sq dt condo.

But growing up, virtually anyone who had a corporate job among my friends parents either commuted from Surrey to either Burnaby or Vancouver based on head office locations. Even back in the 90’s etc. if you wanted a bigger yard and a bigger home, you still had to be east of the Fraser

Yah I been browsing indeed for jobs as well as the fed gov mailings I get while I'm on priority status... the best I see anywhere is hybrid 2/5 days of the week, it's just not a thing anymore. Most stuff is on-site.
I am not in tech sector though so that could be different!

I am not in tech sector though so that could be different! | Are you fluent in French and do you want to work in Public Relations/Digital Marketing? On my first day at my new job, they fired my direct manager LOL.
It's a fully remote role. Pay is undetermined but probably shit since we're funded by the Gov of QC and GAC.

I am not in tech sector though so that could be different! | Tech sector is mostly moving towards hybrid as well. Amazon just moved back to 5 days in office.
Locally, Lululemon is really the only one hiring that's willing give a half decent pay, and they are 3 days in office.

But i'm sure he'll come back here in 10-20 years to tell us how right he was and complain about how bad the traffic there is when he has to sit through 2 extra intersections during a Canucks game night.

The job sector has definitely changed 100%. In the past I've had no problem gaining interest when I post for openings where I work. Generally applicants in the hundreds and after pre screen, skills testing, and 1st interviews I'm usually left with about 40 who make it to the end and I can get 8-10 people or 1 hired out of 3/4 interviews. Since COVID that number has gone down yearly considerably the number of applicants have gone from a few hundred to barely 100 and in the end I'm barely able to get 4 or 5 people. Gig ain't bad, Government job just over $30/hr to start but no work from home, at least not right off the bat. I think that pretty much kills it right there.

But i'm sure he'll come back here in 10-20 years to tell us how right he was and complain about how bad the traffic there is when he has to sit through 2 extra intersections during a Canucks game night. | When we had tolls, everyone cried (I never once did because I’m not an imbecile) and literally everything was better because the dumbs out there would rather spend an extra 20 minutes in traffic VS pay $2 a logical approach to infrastructure.
All I ask for it logical approaches to things. If all these “studies” funded by CoV ultimately come to fruition, and there is only a 3 minute addition to commutes, sure, good for them. I don’t work downtown, I rarely go downtown, but often when I do I use the viaducts.
My skepticism in anything like this is rooted in the deep incompetence in projects like the Hwy 1 widening, the Port Mann/mary hill interchange, countless bike lanes and “pedestrian” improvements I’ve seen in Burnaby that are utter failures when obviously someone thought on paper they would work.
Given the relationship that CoV has with Concord, it’s unlikely you’d ever see a report that went against their wishes of redevelopment.
Btw, when you dig into that company behind those traffic studies, albeit this is the parent company of the one that did the traffic assessment, they have been essentially pulling off tax fraud in the states for a decade, and are behind numerous cover ups in the oil and gas industry where their pockets were obviously greased to downplay the very environmental impact they were hired to assess.
So I wouldn’t be so quick to just take some report funded by Ken sim and his lackeys as gospel. And yes bla bla bla I know it wasn’t him who did the study etc. but they are all the same sacks of shit scratching each others backs at that level.

Yea I'm gonna have to say no to $30 an hour if you have to work in dt, pay for bus pass and have to bum fight or Hunt for parking and spend like what $20 a day + gas.

OTTAWA, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Canada's economy added nearly four times the number of jobs forecasted for December and reached its highest number in almost two years, shrinking bets for a rate cut later this month though one is still expected by the majority of economists.
The economy added a net 90,900 jobs last month, with almost two-thirds coming from full-time work, Statistics Canada said on Friday. The job gains for third time in the past four months were spread across several industries, the agency said.
The unemployment rate, or the share of the labor force which is unemployed, surprisingly ticked down to 6.7%.
| I keep hearing noise around how the economy isn't great (same for the US) yet the jobs reports that keep coming out say things are at least ok. I'm not sure what to believe - the dollar sucks, rate cuts are coming fast and furious but employment is strong yet lots of people are without work. Quote:
