And what has your education done for you lately?

My parents didn't even get to attend grade school, yet it never stopped them from being self made millionaires. I have a BA, not even close to being where they were at the same age.

your courses half a shelf life...you can't just decide to pick up where you left off 15 years later...if you are accepted back in, you'd have to restart from scratch if your course credits expired.

Parents divorced when I was 11

Mother was bipolar and she started drinking and smoking, going out and having fun

Father was a complete beta male who ignored me and spent more time with my brother

Never had any clothes to wear to school, ended up wearing the same shit day after day, had to steal fries and lunch from one of my best friends who is/was on this board. Hard to learn when you're always hungry and felt like you didn't belong at school or at home. I was bullied and I bullied other kids that were unfortunate to be even lower ranked than I was. I had no sense of who or what I was, I was so timid and shy because nobody ever talked to me at home or listened to me, or ever asked me anything about what I liked, or who I thought I could be some day. Kids pick up on that shit fast, and when you're the awkward kid it just invites cruelty. Especially when you're poor at a rich school like Eric Hamber.

Ended up switching to 11 different schools, moved between both parents several times as neither of them wanted a 6 foot tall, 180 pound kid devouring all food in sight, also I interfered with any social life/dating they wanted to do, where as my 6 year younger brother was still a quiet 9 year old

Tried correspondence, but then my father would drop me off at Waterfront Station and I had to work on a bench on the inside of the noisy atrium. I would then wander back up to North Van by sneaking onto the seabus, then I would sneak into the Lonsdale rec center and work out until I could be let back into the house at 4 PM. He left me with no money for food the entire time, or maybe a couple bucks if I was lucky. I admit that I begged for cash sometimes.

This went on for quite awhile, I had absolutely no friends and no self-esteem, I wanted to kill myself for the longest time

I then managed to use a piece of shit computer hobbled together with my dad's spare parts and I got into modeming, and I went onto local chat boards and met up with people 6 or so years older than me, and my old friend with the Supra lifted me up and cared for me more than my worthless shithead father ever did.

I slept on floors, had a futon in a rat infested basement I called home for a few months, it gets a bit blurry here, but at like... 16... I started working shitty, SHITTY jobs. Over time I became a bit more self-sufficient before I moved back home for a few months. Then I was completely neglected, again, and blamed for everything bad that happened in my family, I was a complete black sheep. I was sent to live with a chinese family at 49th and Victoria for a summer, the asian mom was so sweet and caring. I love chinese hospitality and their sense of family for this reason. I had to leave there because it was so far from work in North Van and I felt shame leeching them for food and bus fare during my unpaid couple weeks of work

I lost that job after like a month because the bus broke down one morning and the iranian boss accepted 0 excuses. I then met this girl in Maple Ridge, and her family was wonderful and let me stay there. I got my first taste of what a FAMILY was supposed to be, and I was happy! I couldn't believe it.

A few years went by and I started getting less shitty jobs, they were SUPER shitty, like digging ditches in Mundy park in February at 3c in the pissing rain for $7 an hour. My life was a nightmare, I had to commute there on a bicycle with a broken chain from where the Shell station is on the Mary Hill Bypass. I lived in a basement suite eating the cheapest, greasiest ground beef and pork, along with kraft dinner. I bought an '82 Rx-7 with 1 dead rotor for $300, drove that to a farming job I got that summer and I made $10 an hour!!! I managed to afford a replacement engine for the Rx and I was loving life. Banged a bunch of hot chicks and I started to understand that I could be happy and live well. Kept my chin up and began getting better jobs.

Moved to White Rock to my mom's as she allowed me to stay there while taking a computer course to get some more skilled jobs. Around the end of my schooling my mom flipped her lid because she was sick of my $400-500 a month food bills and how no man wanted to date her because her son lived with her, so she made her choice and I was booted out, again.

Then I got a better job, surfed clubvibes.com for a year, fucked tons of cute girls, TONS, lost the job after 9/11, she killed herself, I moved to Costa Rica, learned to sell porn, and life has been an incredible series of ups and downs(more ups than downs) ever since.

You could say that high school was difficult for me

COMBO BREAKER.

Whats the quick run down between the pro's and con's of a mortgage broker vs big bank?

Planning to purchase a condo, BMO and RBC so far quoted me within the 3.1 to 3.6% range for 5 year fixed. What fine prints/details should I be looking for when I sign the mortgage contracts?

Sorry to stray off topic.

I don't think I will ever get a mortgage. Buying a house and having a girlfriend live with you is a recipe for financial disaster. Renting makes things so much easier, and you can live in a far better neighborhood for less than the cost of a mortgage. I just assume chinese people are all rich and they can have me pay their mortgages.

ING direct gave me the lowest 5 year fixed / VAR when I shopped for mine 4 years ago. ING also offers the option to pay down 20% of principle every year with no interest tacked to it. YMMV.

The financial lounge over at redflagdeals has a table to show all the var/fixed rates @ all banks/CU's. Might be worth to take a look there.

That is true, as long as the individual is prudent with their savings (rainy day fund) as well.

With that said, the area is also improving dramatically and there will be more reason to live here - Solo alone will have a Whole foods anchoring it and some great small coffee shops, etc. plus a large office component. Yeah I went to the solo open house. It's a pretty nice condo but starting prices for 2BR imo are astronomical ($450k+). Vantage is pretty damn expensive too. One of them had really shitty floorplans.

I think the Aviara is sold out, I see the sign whenever I pass by.. Don't forget Brentwood is being redone WITH 4 towers as well but the completion date for all 4 towers is in like 15 years or something. I can't see how all these towers will get filled though. Bought for investment I can see it all sold but actually living in?

Great area to live in though. I'm renting down the street in the Holdom buildings.

How many sq ft is that 2BR unit for $450K?
I know Metrotown is still asking for $600/sqft

I have lived in an OMA unit for 5+ years. I can see myself in the area for maybe another 5 years. I'm somewhat ambivalent about what the future holds for the community, particularly if the ambitious development plans for Brentwood ever come to fruition. I think there will be too much supply and I don't think the area is a good investment (to live or rent) at today's prices.

The Solo development looks good, but I find the whole marketing around Whole Foods amusing. While Whole Foods may be nice, the area is becoming popular with Asians and quite frankly, we don't shop at yuppie stores. We would rather drive up to Hastings and shop for produce at Red Apple Market than pay $3/pound for organic broccoli.

The starting price wasn't $450k, they started at around $380k for the 900sqft 2BR which is VERY cheap for a Bosa building, 9' ceilings, and A/C. The reason they "start" at $450k is because the lowest unit you can get is on the 18th floor now. They are also posting a $10k discount. This is a VERY competitive rate IMO. The 900sqft units in my old building at Brentwood Gate are all $450k+ for 3 year old 8'6" units without A/C. I wasn't impressed with Vantage at all, same or more money, lower ceilings, no A/C, less amenities, etc.

I believe Aviara is the opposite, I don't think they have started marketing it yet.

Then do you think white people should be more like Chinese people? Many people here depise the kids that come from richer Chinese parents because they provide them with everything and let them live life/ go to school. Do you think there is a line where parents must not cross ( in terms of financial) ? If so, how much is too much?

Are you sure? I know there were prices starting at 380k but for 1BR+den. I may have misread though. I do agree that its good for what you get but personally, still too expensive haha. I wasn't seriously looking at the time, just went to it because of the free lunch and I work up the street.

*edit
You were right. Starts at $379,000 for 2BR.

Yes, I am sure. Their price sheets they are handing out now reflect the units that are still available, not all units in the building. The 1BR + Den units "start" at $369k but that is on the 29th floor. They were closer to $300k for the 2nd floor.

i lived in OMA before too, i really like the area, when it was at an affordable price. i don't think i'd be interested in buying in to that area at today's prices either. too pricy for me.
