Yeah but there were no low-cost broad market ETFs back then
And $100 would have been my entire year's salary.
And I would have had to travel to the NYSE to buy something in person from a stockbroker
And I probably would have been lynched while travelling there while not being white
And also being -55 years old it would have been hard to buy a ticket in the first place

Only on this forum when you share historic market data you get a self-reflection essay based on historical context. Fuck my life.

I think the sweet spot to retire is around $1.5m. At a 5 to 7% return, 4% rule, zero debt, renting, and having a decent pension, you’re set. That’s why at a certain stage in life it often makes more sense to stay liquid, rent, and live off your portfolio instead of dumping a massive amount of cash into a house, which isn’t automatically a smart financial move.
Once you factor in property tax, maintenance, insurance, transaction costs, and the opportunity cost of not investing that money, real estate doesn’t always come out ahead. I think local real estate might actually underperform over the next decade. And what’s wild is how many locals still refuse to invest in markets at all and just keep dumping money into property because they assume prices only go one way. This lack of diversification is a huge risk, especially in a market this expensive and yield poor.

Although inheritance is not part of the forecasting for retirement it's hard not to think about it when both my parents and my wife's parents own property in Vancouver. Even if they run into health issues that require them to sell their homes to pay for private care my wife and I are still looking at $1m+ inheritance.
My brother thinks of it as money that will go to the grandkids instead as we both have enough that we don't need it BUT that kind of money moves me into biz class and flying biz class on long haul flights sounds REALLY AWESOME.

im too poor to think abt first class even if i come into money. dropping 10k for a flight that's normally 1.5k just doesnt compute to me. sure i'll pay the $500 to pick the best economy seat on the plane, but that's about as far as i'd ever go lol.

yah yah dont knock it till you try it. ever since we started flying biznaz to hong kong i cant even go back to peon class. like physically unable to do.... ill shit my pants or go berserker rampage.
some things you can do without, like a fancy car, but your sanity is worth the 10k if it means you dont have to deal with the majority of human scum in scum class. At least do premium econ, its way more civilized as that section of the airplane is small enough that its still a much better experience than the cesspool of economy.

I think if you are strategic on which carrier and age of fleet you select, some of the economy class flights are not bad. I've lucked out on my flights to Asia on EVA, United, and China Airlines. I think I have enough self control to not shit my pants and go berserker rampage.

I dunno, even if I was rich the value proposition just isn't there
10k for a flight that lasts 12-16 hours tops
or you can get 10 nights at a 5 star hotel where you can actually get pampered.
or a night with a high end escort if that floats your boat.

we just upgraded to the exit row seats on our flight to tw and it was $250 per person each way, was totally worth it.
we sat at the front of the section right next to where they prepare the food, got to stare at the cute attendants all flight, and no bathroom in that area. stretched our legs out as far as they could go.. it was great.

Im with unit and civicblues
Paying 3-6x your flight cost, to relax for 8-16hrs is insane
The exit row solution is best money spent
Theres endless better ways to spend 4k
New couch every year
Dont work for an extra 1-4 weeks per year and not feel guilty
4 more track days
70 more restaurant dinners throughout the year
List is literally endless

Y'all doing it wrong. I used 220k AP to pay for 2x RT ANA business class flights to Japan and back.
That's roughly 10K in value, all from credit card sign up bonuses.

I don't believe in toning down when you get older, it's not like all of a sudden at age 75 you're spending $200000 a year. Even on a $1.5m portfolio, even if it drops 30% you have a million. Either let it recover ride it out, money is going to beneficiary anyways

According to that WealthSimple retirement calculator, I can easily retire at age 55 by just saving an extra $19K per month.
Easy peazy.

Speaking of Wealthsimple, what do you guys think of the new home giveaway? https://www.wealthsimple.com/en-ca/h...away-vancouver
Dunno if I wanna live in Lions Bay with a bunch of elderly NIMBYs, but sure beats moving out to buttfuck Ontario where their last home giveaway was.
