The Peace Arch border crossing between B.C. and Washington state is closed and travellers are being diverted following a shooting incident on Tuesday afternoon.

Canada Border Services Agency confirmed an incident had taken place, that police were on the scene and that the border was closed in both directions.

According to news reports, a female border guard was shot and wounded and taken to hospital. A male suspect was reported to have shot himself at the scene.

A witness told CKNW radio that it appeared the guard might have been inspecting the vehicle.

“It would be the lane closest to the building,” the caller told CKNW. “It’s a white van. They’ve got the back doors open. It looks like maybe the lady might have been doing an inspection. The people I’ve talked to around here heard the gunshots.”

Glen Pederson, who lives near the Peace Arch border crossing, said two RCMP helicopters began circling over the area and one subsequently landed in a parking lot inside the border control area.

“There are cops all over the place,” he said. “The traffic is holding. Nobody is moving ... there are police or border agents everywhere.”

Mr. Pederson said he didn’t hear any gunfire.

Wow, it's so weird seeing Peach Arch like that with no cars.

I wonder what the protocol is to deal with the cars that were already in line? Turn them all around? Rush them through?

twitchyzero 10-16-2012 01:37 PM

hope she survives

why does it say traffic is closed going south when it was a CBSA employee that got shot? (coming back to/entering Canada)

yray 10-16-2012 01:41 PM

^ think they u-turn all the people back to the states

According to a FB on my page from a CTV reporter:

" Peace Arch border shooting - unconfirmed reports say Canada Border Services Agent was shot in the neck and the man who did it, then shot himself in the head."

I wonder if this a domestic issue, like ex husband or boyfriend.

And no way in hell would they rush cars through which such a serious incident like this. They have to shut both sides down because they have no clue about the shooter and there could be someone else that might be loose.

Wow, at a border crossing - one of the last places you'd expect something like this to happen!

society gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside..

hope she is alright, at least he then took himself out of the world, saves tax money going into very expensive trials just to put another crazy behind bars.

side note, i wonder what could have happened to instigate this? people have to have some serious issues if suicide is your plan B

A precaution perhaps? No one knows if this is a coordinated attack.

twitchyzero 10-16-2012 01:47 PM

are the agents in each booth normally armed?

The guy probably had a few bags of gas in the back and she wanted to charge duty on them.

JK, hope she is ok.

The border guard has been airlifted to hospital; her exact condition is not known.
Callers to CKNW say they heard two shots were fired, and then they heard the woman scream out and slump to the ground.

They say the shooter was in a white, 12 passenger van with tinted windows.
