For those who've upgraded, how long did it take? I'm not sure if I want to tackle this tonight, or tomorrow.

Yea, I managed to figure that out but I guess that's the only way eh? It does take a bit longer than the old system. Looks like Alt+F4 still works.

Took about an hour or so.

install it and just download it from torrents/newsgroups (not the rtm version but the reail one) and keep that along with your product key to use whenever ?

So how does that work? as long as I have a legit key, it will be compatible with any windows8 I download?

Yeah, reading a bunch of forums, seems like XP users are getting shafted. Not sure if it's ONLY them, but XP users are for sure.

Graeme S 10-29-2012 10:16 PM

XP users getting shafted? I'm surprised MS is allowing XP users to run this; it's supposedly an upgrade for people who've bought Win7 PCs since June.

I think it's a way for MS to make nice with all the people who've been like :fuckthatshit: with buying legit windows.

BigTrollFace 10-29-2012 10:17 PM

got a hulu app! so if I make an account I can watch it?!!

If I'm not mistaken, I think $40 for upgrade supports XP, Vista, and win7 users.
The $15 that this thread is jumping on is the one that's only for Win7 users of June and later.

Although we obviously all found a loophole and paid $15 for it regardless.

Either way, I'm legit cause my XP is legit too! :okay:
(My system also meets win8 requirements despite it being old.)

ZenZa 10-29-2012 10:44 PM

So does upgrade mean that your Windows 7 key would become invalid?

My girlfriend's laptop is on Vista and I'm wondering if she could upgrade to 7 and use my old key.

Graeme S 10-29-2012 10:50 PM

Keys don't become invalid, but they're not transferrable, technically.

Graeme S 10-29-2012 11:24 PM

A couple of my friends have said they've been asked for win7 keys as they go through the installation. Anyone here run into that?

the hulu plus app is a paid monthly service ($5) only available in the US but you should be able to use a DNS to get around that; that's what im doing for my dad and his Netflix and what im doing for Hulu through the web browser (im not paying for HuluPlus just regular Hulu)

Araaadi 10-29-2012 11:47 PM

Still very iffy about the update, I have a code for the $15 update in my email but I am waiting on more reviews.

SkinnyPupp 10-29-2012 11:57 PM

I wouldn't be in a hurry to use it. I kind of have to though. Will start performance testing tonight

Nope!
My Win 7 Ultimate was downloaded from torrents, but I activated it using an activator program that asks which model Mainboard your computer is using -- it then generates an OEM key specific to that so Microsoft thinks you're using the real deal.
It never asked me for any key except the promo one which brought it down to $15.

TOPEC 10-30-2012 11:51 AM

can confirm it works, took me 2 hrs to figure it out and get everything running

PandaDog 10-30-2012 12:55 PM

Just got a promotion code, planning on purchasing Win8 later and install it onto my laptop

For those that already upgraded, do you guys find any significant increases in terms of performance? (I'm on Windows 7-64 right now)

valent|n0 10-30-2012 01:12 PM

1. get promo code on email
2. run upgrade assistant.exe
3. select pay by paypal or credit card
4. enter promo code
5. download

.....

hopefully what other are saying is true that I can use this on fresh install??

Graeme S 10-30-2012 05:37 PM

To do a fresh install apparently you have to install it once, then when it freaks out and says you haven't installed before, then start the installation process again and it'll be all good.

That's pretty much it. You can choose to keep personal files or nothing during installation.

The serial key that Microsoft email you will only be valid by upgrading from Window 7. So if you are doing a fresh install on a computer that does not run Window 7 then the serial key would not work
