To each their own.

Why do people spend $300 on sushi? Why do people spend $$$ on wine at a resto when you can buy it for a fraction of the price from a store? Etc etc.

Anyways, I hope those who enjoy King Crab is getting their fill! I hear prices are gonna get even more expensive this weekend cause it's so limited this year.

How late does the season usually go until? Or I guess it's until places run out of stock?

HonestTea 03-23-2013 01:17 PM

Recommend me a restaurant for King Crab?

There's just so many restaurants to choose from! Which place makes it the best?

We went to Imperial Court tonight and it was $15.99/lbs. Paid the extra $10 and $15 to get the two different styles (steamed with garlic is default and the extra $10 gave us the deep-fried version with spices and the $15 gave the head baked with rice). Not too bad.

Called over to Golden Swan and it was $20.99/lbs.

Prices are definitely going up, but have a glance at your parents' Chinese newspapers. I'm sure you can't go wrong with places that advertise for $18.80/lbs. Just hope they don't do the ol' Asian switcheroo. :)

Gotta be careful though. Say you had a 8lbs crab.

$15.99 X 8 + $10 + $15....brings you to $19.11/lb.
While some other restaurants doesn't charge you extra for making it the 3rd/4th style.

Darn, hopefully there's still some kicking around.

I know some people that have had it as recent as last night. I'm planning on taking out my family this Saturday.

I'm probably just going to book a reservation at Sun Sui Wah. Anyone have any experiences having it there?

Skittlez160 04-01-2013 08:59 AM

Actually, I just saw this:

Looks pretty damn good to me haha

godwin 04-01-2013 04:34 PM

It doesn't mention the origin of the crabs though.. AFAIK Korean King Crabs are available round the year it is the Alaskan that is seasonal.

Ahh yes very true. I called them and asked and they did say it was Alaskan. Though of course anyone can say it is hahaha. I made a reservation for my family so I guess we'll see!

I recommend Golden Harvest Seafood Restaurant, at 4818 Main St.

I was there last Friday for this 14 lb crab. Not the best pic, but it's more blue/purple than red/brown (prior to cooking). It's a meatier version with thinner shell so better bang for the buck I guess. It was $24/lb and their tanks were overflowing with king crabs.

But go now because I think the season is winding down.

Were those 2 dishes of "garlic sauce" crab HALF Of the drab?

And, you would get the OTHER half in a different sauce?

Just curious.

Marshall Placid 04-20-2013 02:04 AM

It was $14 per pound 1 month ago.

Right now, Russian "Alaskan King Crab" is gaining market share, and they bring prices down.

There is a difference.

Russian imported ones are slightly not as fresh (due ot the distance) and has a rougher meat.

Alaskan Alaskan ones are a little better.

And, mind the different types of king crab (there are red, golden, yellow, etc. BEFORE they are cooked).

I THINK the red ones are the best tasting ones.

And, Kirin Richmond, IMHO, serve the best cooked King crab with the best variety of sauces.

Also, J & C Top Gun, I believe, is a hidden gem, with just as good King Crab, but not as many varieties of sauces.

And, you get EXACTLY what you pay for.

Venice Garden on 1st ave and Renfrew near T&T has a nice special. $198 for 6 people, gets you 3 plates of garlic crab legs, 1 plate of salt and pepper crab body, 1 giant crab shell fried rice, fish stomach soup and more.

typ. 02-18-2014 07:52 PM

evlee 02-18-2014 08:00 PM

godwin 02-18-2014 11:27 PM

What I really don't get is the Alaskan King Crab season runs from October and January.. so how come we get the cheap craps in March? Unless it is sourced from Russia / Korea?

Last year was great, my family had a blast. I'm hoping to try at least two different restaurants this year.
