I wonder how much of a power struggle is going on behind closed doors in NK. It seems to me that Kim Jong-un is doing all this to appease the military generals in his regime.

As stated, this is normal for the Kim to test new SK leaders and convince the world to give him food.
I don't think both sides and their allies want war, as China wants to have NK as a buffer between them and SK and Japan (Both with tonnes US military bases). And US ,SK and everyone else wouldn't know what to do after the war with millionns of people who have been taught nothing but propaganda.
But if it is serious, they have to be nuts. Not to ride on USA's dick, but their airforce alone can probably destroy most of the world's conventional militaries. Not to mention the US has thousands of Marines stationed in Japan and thousands of soldiers in SK, as well as 60% of the US Navy oriented towards Asia.

PAJU, South Korea - North Korea on Wednesday barred South Korean workers from entering a jointly run factory park just over the heavily armed border in the North, officials in Seoul said, a day after Pyongyang announced it would restart its long-shuttered plutonium reactor and increase production of nuclear weapons material.
The move to block South Koreans from going to their jobs at the Kaesong industrial complex, the last remaining symbol of detente between the rivals, comes amid increasing hostility from Pyongyang, which has threatened to stage nuclear and missile strikes on Seoul and Washington and has said that the armistice ending the 1950s Korean War is void.

SEOUL — The North Korean army said Thursday it had final approval to launch "merciless" military strikes on the United States, involving the possible use of "cutting-edge" nuclear weapons.
In a statement published by the official KCNA news agency, the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) said it was formally informing Washington that reckless US threats would be "smashed by... cutting-edge smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear strike means".
"The merciless operation of (our) revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified," the statement said.
North Korea had threatened a "pre-emptive" nuclear strike against the United States a month ago, and last week the supreme army command ordered its strategic rocket units to combat status for strikes on the US mainland and US bases in Guam and Hawaii.
"The moment of explosion is approaching fast," Thursday's statement said, adding that a war could break out on the Korean peninsula "today or tomorrow".
"In view of this situation, the KPA General Staff in charge of all operations will take powerful practical military counteractions in succession," it said.
Despite a successful long-range rocket launch in December, most experts believe North Korea is years from developing a genuine inter-continental ballistic missile that could strike the mainland United States.
Hawaii and Guam would also be outside the range of its medium-range missiles, which would be capable, however, of striking US bases in South Korea and Japan.

Exactly. Kim Jong-un is embroiled in a power struggle within his own government because he has failed to consolidate power around him since his father's death.
For one thing, he was recently the target of an assassination attempt by factions of the government that were loyal to his opposition.
Moreover, NK's regent, Jang Sung-taek recently stripped the military of its revenues from illegal activities (i.e., NK's superdollars) and gave control of those illegal activities to Kim Jong-Un.
IMO (and I could be wrong), Kim Jong-Un took the revenues from the military for some reason or another likely as punishment for an unreported prior assassination attempt or from an outright refusal to pledge undying loyalty to him. Kim has had a hell of a time reigning in the military since his father died.
The military is, understandably, angry and, in order to maintain power, Kim Jong-Un showers high-ranking military leaders with luxury goods and permits them to proceed with a third nuclear test that Beijing specifically told NK not to do. In a likely blunder, Kim (or, more likely, Jang) calls Beijing's bluff and conducts the test anyway thinking that Beijing will never agree to UN sanctions against NK. Beijing does, in fact, ratify sanctions on luxury goods. So now the military has no money, they've never been keen on the idea of a young Kim Jong-Un telling them what to do, and they're restless. Kim's only hope is to project their anger on an outside enemy, glorify them among the people by giving them the power to fight this evil foe, and hope that concessions from the six-party talks on NK's nuclear program will be enough to appease the military from launching a coup d'etat and taking power away from Kim and his loyalists.
