See, if the world was full of rational people, then I would completely agree with you. Unfortunately the world has its share of nutjobs who assume things based on anecdotal evidence and jump to the first conclusion that comes to mind, regardless of if those facts are actually legitimate or not. Sadly Amurrica has it's own grouping that falls into this catagory.

I, too, have hoped that this sort of thing would not happen again -- regardless of what country it occurs in -- but it's a very unrealistic dream.

Just as an aside here, the first few hours after an incident is always filled with a bunch of misinformation. Not saying it's intentional but eyewitness accounts are always contradictory (reports saying the two explosions happened anywhere between fifteen seconds and two minutes apart, etc). Don't necessarily rely on what's being told by the media because they're simply relaying information as they're being told it. It's too early into the event to fully get all the true facts. Much better to wait until the press conferences before assuming X-number of people were killed or how many explosions there actually were, etc.

Social media is a mixed blessing during a disaster like what just unfolded. A lot of subjective views are published, but facts are few and far between. There are so many opposing claims and ideas that it hard to tell rhetoric from reality. The result is the quality of information we receive is compromised. Information itself is a resource. To be used effectively, it has to be turned into knowledge and understanding.

I see both sides coming up with crazy conclusions:

-Obama did it
-I'd bet a good amount of money this was caused by gun crazies, showing people can be murdered by things other than guns
-Damn ragheads

And of course, once they've drawn their conclusions from whatever probably-inaccurate info fits in with their world view, well, any FACTS to the contrary are obviously lies intended to blind you to the truth. If someone has decided that this was the work of "some damn sand niggers" then there's no swaying them - you could catch four good ol' boys red-handed and have them confess publicly and to the conspiracy nuts, those are just puppets being instructed by the CIA to take the blame to deflect attention.

So now there are conflicting/questionable reports that police ordered cell service shut down in the area in case of other cellular-triggered devices... followed by the inevitable complaints about rights being trampled on, etc.
