Just came back from Japan and managed to cop out on a few Japanese whiskeys after raiding through at least a dozen liquor stores.
I wish I can keep 'em all but only the 2015 Yamazaki and miniature bottles are mine. |

I was surprised that prices are sort-of uniform across the board whether it's being sold in a big department store or in a small liquor store.

In many cases, manufacturers had to work really hard to dress up the bottle to make it look cool to increase sales. There was another example where a tequila company tried to sell their product in Dubai, a country where very few gave a damn for tequila..What they did was created an exotic looking bottle to help project an image that screams money and exclusivity.
Not to digress from this thread, but sobieski and stolichnaya branded vodka are great sippers if you are interested in this spirit.

Vodka is vodka is vodka, with no aging involved, you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between vodkas in a blind taste test. Sure Absolut finishes slightly differently than Stoli, but not much. Grey Goose was very smart to launch a vodka twice the price of regular vodka pricing 20 years ago.

Wow you scored a bottle of 21 Hibiki! Super jealous! How much was that?
IMO the Nikka 21 pales in comparison to most other Japanese whiskeys. I have that Yamazaki sitting in my collection too, haven't opened it yet! Quote:

A good read if you are interested in the history behind Grey Goose (and jagermeister), or just good marketing in general: Sidney Frank - The Man Behind Grey Goose Vodka Quote:
At 5:20 on a Sunday morning in the summer of 1996, Sidney Frank—liquor baron extraordinaire, dapper elderly gent, CEO of the Sidney Frank Importing Co.—picked up his phone in a fit of inspiration. He dialed up his No. 2 executive, who listened in a groggy daze as Frank proclaimed, “I figured out the name! It’s Grey Goose!”
And so was born one of the most astonishing brands in the history of distilled spirits. Grey Goose vodka, invented from thin air that summer morning, had as yet no distillery, no bottle, and—perhaps the most pressing order of business—no vodka. | Quote:
“[Jagermeister is a] liqueur with an unpronounceable name,” says Ted Wright of Liquid Intelligence, a beverage-marketing firm. “It’s drunk by older, blue-collar Germans as an after-dinner digestive aid. It’s a drink that on a good day is an acquired taste. If Sidney Frank can make that drink synonymous with ‘party’—which he has—he can pretty much do anything.” |

^ Sidney Frank was a visionary. He was a brilliant marketer, he turned Jager from a deli digestive drink to what it is today. When he first marketed Jager, he only promoted it in Ivy League School bars.....Goodwill hunting anyone? He understood Ivy League bars are aspirational for common folks.....

I'm in Japan right now as well and I'm having a hell of a time finding it for a reasonable price. I found it in a small liquor store marked up quite a bit, it was being sold for 39,000JPY (about 500CAD) and the one store that a friend said had Yamazaki 18 for 25,000JPY was sold out.
So far I only managed to grab Hibiki 12 and 17, for what I consider fairly reasonable prices. Still on the hunt for other stuff... The Yamazaki distillery had lots available for tasting but none for sale.

They were being sold at that store for 27,000JPY (taxes inclusive). Later that day I was strolling around the department stores in Umeda and found a gold mine of Japanese Whiskeys still in stock and being sold in Hanshin: Yamazaki 12, Yamazaki Limited Edition 2015 and several Hibiki 21's; they were 9,500, 10,000 and 25,000JPY respectively (duty-free prices, just make sure you bring your passport along for a tax refund). Hope you can still score some.
Kansai airport also had plenty of Yamazaki 18 Limited Editions in stock for 50,000JPY, but thats too rich for my taste

The prices of the Japanese whiskies are pretty high-up, wow.
I recall that 6 years ago, down over at Costco in Bellingham, I spotted bottles of Yamazaki and Hibiki side by side on the shelves. At the time, I didn't gave much thought to them, one of it sported a price of $68 or something. If only....
Might have taken a photo of it, I'll see what I can find..

Some other high priced vodka I did not like are Uluvka and that Crystal Head Skull vodka. I'll take Stoli and Ketel One over those 2 any day and they are less than half the price. Quote:

My friend is flying in to Canada from the Bejing Airport soon, can anyone chime in with any knowledge of good pick ups from the Duty Free (Whiskey)?
I am thinking a bottle of Moutai, but I am unsure what whiskey selections they have over there..

Ever since one of my good friend's wedding I have been scarred by Moutai
Don't think I will ever like it.
For Duty-Free Whiskey, depends on which airport but they often carry some "Limited Editions", which would be a good pick-up. Personally I've been really into Asian whiskeys, the Kavalan Soloist might be a good one at the Beijing airport.
