I've used Shaw for several years before switching over to Telus, and I must say their internet service is significantly more reliable than Shaw in my opinion. I remember I'd have to call them up at least twice a month for them to reset my internet this and that, it was quite a nightmare. Paid for 35mbps was barely getting 20mbps via ethernet.

Switched to Telus internet and TV bundle with 25mbps internet, have only once had to call Telus ever in the last year or so and I get a solid 22-25mbps via ethernet and 18-20mbps via wifi. Very satisfied.

Optic was cutting out bad a few days ago when the weather got hot here in Calgary because their systems were over heating. Shaw? Mint.

If he's running Telus TV he's most likely on the Actiontec V1000 (Dual Antenna)... unless he hasn't had a service call in a while to upgrade he's on the Dlink + Alcatel (Cellpipe) combo setup.

shaw also has the built in router on their modem, and I had to call in to get them to disable the routing option before using our own routers

Correct. I'm using the Actiontec V1000H using firmware version 31.30L.57.

One major tip - Ensure the connections at the router or whatever you want to call it is TIGHT. Tighter than a Catholic nun. I'm serious. If it's loose in any way, you end up dropping packets and then everything goes to shit, you come back on and swear your head off blaming Revscene. Take a wrench and tighten that shit up like no tomorrow to ensure seamless quality of TV and Interwebz.

Normally installers use a 20lb torque crescent wrench to tighten these, if they are hand tight then packets are more likely to be lost. You should not be able to untighten it with your hand after the install.

Anyone have experience with the new telus services? I really don't want to go through the hassles of switching especially if its not that much better.

You mind sharing what they offered? They came by my place but I told them no without even listening to what they had to offer, after they left I kind of regretted it.

Wrong. Torqueing it too much could cause degradation as well.

Nabs suggestion of using a torque wrench is correct; torque till it clicks, and not any further.

Thanks for this tip! I think I moved the router a bit and one of the antennas came lose and my laptop kept dropping the connection and reconnecting. I couldn't figure it out for days until I read this. Tightened it up and it's back to being rock solid.

Weird thing is that my work laptop was fine, guess it has a better wireless card.

Has anyone every experienced with shaw a constant signal drop on their Cisco modem? I'm on the 25 plan and my modem restarts every 1-2 hours. I googled it and it seems like a common problem with no solution.

is the telus 15/15 deal still going on? My shaw student discount ended... sadness. 50 bucks for 2 shaw extreme lines was sweet though.

So is it true that Telus would NOT allow you to put your Telus modem into bridge mode? I ask because I run a separate router and I do port forward.

switched from shaw to telus optik near the end of may just before their promotion ended.
installed since 2 weeks ago and no problems yet. paying $68/month now vs shaw's well over $100/month for pretty much the same internet/tv/telephone service.
15mbps connection now and speedtest sometimes show around 16mbps.
Also fairchild will be going HD in August!

my experience with shaw internet for the past few years varied... I did have to call them MONTHLY to fix frequent modem disconnections. Other than one or two phone calls a month to shaw, I was pleased with the speed I got for what I paid.

a year in telus optik (now) and I am certainly impressed as I've only called them once about "lag". ONLY thing is....when ever my microwave is on it completely disconnects the wifi signal.

This is true, in order for the TelusTV to work, the modem has to be switched off bridge mode (I believe the second mode is call Routed mode iirc)
