BBM - BLackberry Messenger launching on android & iPhone (android link inside)

Blackberry Messenger launching on Android, iPhone | News1130

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A feature that people loyal to Blackberry have been asking for is on it’s way this weekend.

Blackberry Messenger (BBM) will be available on Android and iPhone. This opens the door for people on all of the major smartphone platforms to send messages back and forth.

Local tech journalist Akash Sablok tells us it’s something Blackberry is hoping will help them turn things around.

“Putting this out there, expanding the user base, and of course, giving BBM options to people that now can communicate with people outside the Blackberry… will hopefully have people retain their Blackberry.”

“I’ve done a rough survey that people do really this app to be able to communicate with users of other devices. This allows them to hold on to their BBM,” he adds.

One of the big selling points of the cross-platform BBM is group chats, with up to 30 contacts.

But while people who own a Blackberry can send photos and video, that’s a feature that won’t come to Android and iPhone until later on.

**is BBM even relevant anymore?

I would get it to try it out... then switch back to whatsapp.

BBM is too late to the game (again). Whatsapp uses your current phone number as your "pin" so whats the point in remembering another set of numbers really.

why launch it now then?

!MiKrofT 09-20-2013 10:09 AM

Cause if they wait any longer ppl won't even remember what BBM is.

Jegz 09-20-2013 10:36 AM

yee nigga bbm is the shit good times

ScizzMoney 09-20-2013 12:03 PM

I used to like it because chicks were super willing to give out their pin rather than their phone number.

How long ago did BB (err RIM back then) did they say they were going to do this.. lmao..

tomatogunk 09-20-2013 01:37 PM

I think the main selling point is having a personalized PIN and the send/read receipts. Screen share could be something as well in the future. Although I don't really see a lot of whatsapp/other messaging platform users jumping ship to BBM.

BBM should be here by 4:30pm according to BBM coming to Android and Apple users today, gradual global roll out underway - Sci/Tech - DNA

The big advantage for BBM in my experiences, was the reliability of it. Whatsapp sometimes doesn't send and receive messages instantly. Whereas, BBM was much more reliable. My Whatsapp messages sometimes take 5-20mins to send.

I think the BBM servers are much more secure and reliable than the whatsapp servers. Though, I haven't used BBM in a long time, I still get reliability issues with my whatsapp messages today.

Running it already, if you DL the leaked APK from crackberry.com the servers are up and running. So it works now.

This is only for android. iPhone is live in NZ, australia and indonesia so i'm sure it will move westward quickly...

Everyone uninstall whats app and transition over to the future...

This happens almost daily for me. It takes a random amount of time to send/receive whatsapp messages. If I know my message is time sensitive, I will always use SMS or call. I can't rely on whatsapp.

Is downloading the leaked APK the same as the official version? I'm worried to download it for whatever reason.

My friend said his friends with blackberry's aren't getting his BBM messages (he's on android)

parm104 09-21-2013 11:53 AM

I keep getting a "No Connection Found" error on this release while in setup. The beta worked fine for me though.

Edit: blackberrry has blocked service, this is a known issue.

!Nhan 09-21-2013 11:55 AM

i think they found out and shut it down. my msgs aerent working anymore lol oh whales

PeanutButter 09-21-2013 11:57 AM

Hmm. I'm not sure about the "send" button being on the bottom right instead of being inline with the message box...

Gh0stRider 09-21-2013 01:54 PM

ya, cant connect

parm104 09-21-2013 02:39 PM

The APP store has been giving me the run around all day too. First it said it's only available in the US app store so I changed my account store information. Then it tells me it's not available in the US app store and that it's only available in the New Zealand app store!

TatsuyaKataoka 09-21-2013 03:13 PM

I think it's pertinent to mention that BBM is still huge outside of the west. Indonesia, India, the UAE, etc are faithful to Blackberry.

BBM for Android launch not on schedule; BlackBerry keeps users waiting

PeanutButter 09-21-2013 05:51 PM

BlackBerry ceases worldwide BBM rollout, cites earlier Android leak as the cause

Seriously?????

Quote:

Many millions of people are anxiously awaiting the release of BBM for Android and iOS, and some of them already have access to the messaging service on the latter platform. But since the Android version was supposed to be made available at 7am ET this morning, many potential users have been frustrated by BlackBerry’s silence and the app’s absence on the Play Store.

Turns out there was an issue caused by an earlier leak of the app, one that brought an incomplete experience to users around the world. BlackBerry has since decided to cut off access to that version, leaving 1.1 million users without service until further notice. The company is also discontinuing the rollout on iOS until further notice, and will likely wait until it can bring a new Android version that lacks interplay with the leaked one.

According to a blog post, the BBM teams “continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM.” Existing iOS users — those whose countries had access up ’til now — will continue to be able to use the app, but the leaked Android version should no longer work.

No word on when BlackBerry will resume the rollout, but we’re anxiously awaiting its arrival. This issue does not affect BBM on BlackBerry platforms.

BBMme 09-21-2013 05:52 PM

But it's still pretty impressive 1.1 million on a unofficial app.
