cheap E82 if you're willing to turn a wrench. VCG, thermo are easy DIY's, just a pain in the ass. Bunch of brake parts included too.

It presents poorly but you could make a pretty good beater here for 5 grand i think.

i ran this one past my e46 m3 guru in the states.

he didn't think this could be brought up to any kind of desired condition for less than buying one already in that same desired condition. there's no shortcuts w these cars.

be great for a track beater though

I did a double take on the pictures, it seems to have lived a hard life. Speaking of BMW's, are there any experts that know if this is worth it?

https://vancouver.craigslist.org/nvn...364017902.html

Not a real M3, and my guess is that it doesn't have the subframe reinforcements. Seems like E36 M3's have gone up quite a lot... I see E36 sedans in the 20's now which is awfully close to E46 money...

Not sure how bad the damage is to this one, but I would prob pass on this one.

Imo not worth it. This should be 10k as it’s pretty much a track car at this moment.

On the other hand what do you guys think about a 2011 e92 m3 for 20k? Good deal?

For less money I'd just get something like this 135i. It will end up being more reliable and way quicker than old school M3s, especially with a DCT. Not to mention a more modern interior / navigation.

Would an N54/N55 be more reliable? By now, these cars are 10 years old and are quite complex. Granted an S50/S52 is 20-something years old by now.

N55 is the sweet spot, the single turbo proved to be way more reliable than the twin turbo N54 by far. At the same time you are not paying for the M premium but still have more power than anything before the N54.

Which is why many cars still stuck with the N55 like the M2, despite adding the extra turbo until they went S55.

N55 are super easy to work on, if you watch the youtube videos and you've never worked on a car before. You can fix 95% of the issues.

Checked this in person, the car is really beat up
To fix the CEL and to restore it to stock with OEM goodies (alot of things were swapped with just a 3-series part), it'll take a few months + $6-7K or more to fix alot of things
not really worth the time and money
You can buy a better condition car with the total amount unless you're really into fixing cars .....

Curiosity got the best of me and I went to check out that Volvo C70 coupe because I was surprised it was still available a month after being posted:

https://vancouver.craigslist.org/rds...372142554.html

I'm going to admit, I got intrigued about the idea of restoring its condition... some local parts places have the broken tail-light and front corner lenses for $200 all in (Alpi) and there's a Volvo specialist in Nanaimo that has all the parts needed to do a manual swap on it which, from reading on the forums, is actually pretty easy and sounded like a fun project.

After looking at the car up close... definitely more hesitant... the ad says 90,000kms but it's actually only got 68,000kms on it. Crazy low. However, there are numerous dents all over the body, including one by a brick. Apparently the son is a drug addict and smashed the car with a brick and punched various other parts of it. He also smashed the instrument cluster clear protector, which is probably why the speedometer doesn't work. Also has dash lights for oxygen sensors and braking system. Seems to run okay, but feels a bit heavy accelerating and the engine has a bit of a tick. Lifter noise. Some accessories belt squeaking.

All in all I wasn't going to pay $1,800 for it even with the low mileage, he's willing to come down to $1,500 which I was willing to do.

However, he said "no accidents" besides the damage done by the son, but he is the second owner and he bought it only like 3-4 years ago... I felt like the back bumper colour was a bit off, so I grabbed the VIN and ran a report on ICBC... right off the lot in 1998 it had a $6,500 accident.. then 2 years later another $5,300... then a couple of $700 claims and in March 2021 an "undefined" claim... not sure what that means... but maybe they attempted to claim the damage done by the son and then decided not to proceed?

Anyway, with that much damage history, the value of fixing this car is totally diminished unfortunately. I think it would be a fun project if you wanted to drive it for a long long time, but if you wanted to fix / enjoy / sell you're hooped on this one due to the history.

The passenger side rear door doesn't blend in well with the rear quarter. I reckon it's had some respray of some sort. The mileage is very low, but $8500 seems like an awful lot for a 15 year old Hyundai. No doubt it has plenty of life left.

Agreed, from a kdm owner, I would never pay 8k+ for a 15 year old hyundai even if it has only 38k kms.

long roof :check
3 pedal :check
turbo :check
recent $ maintenance :check

I'd be going to look at this one if I hadn't picked up my winter car. Pending a clean title, this would be good get at 4k. Unstoppable w some snowies EDIT: it's on studded snowies - you could go to the north pole in this thing.

interesting post.

Was the head gasket issue because the factory gaskets were inadequate or is there a design flaw in the motor that means that the problem will reoccur even with an aftermarket or newer head gasket?

I gave my $850 BMW X5 to my teenage son as his first car, he can be the 800 dollar baller now. I'm interested in this one as my next snowy day car, the car for the days when the snow is too deep for my winter DD (S550 Mustang GT) to make it out of my driveway.
