Can you sell your catch to anyone or restaurants you like?

In Banana republic countries I would assume all kinds of commercial catches are to be pooled into the states hands for a set price.
Im interested in knowing how government controls the food supply by fees (licenses & taxes on boats etc) or quotas it implements to limit locals from making good profits off natural resources.

edit -
Also do know if there are large private commercial operations that are competing against locals?

On another note, if I recall correctly, the "Norwegian" companies that are profiting off farmed Salmon in B.C. waters are causing sea lice which once the wild salmon enter the Fraser river to spawn, the fresh water works against the fish and lice kills millions of fish before they're able to lay their eggs.

Friend I work withs dad is a comercial fisherman and with it comes a license to sell fish privately I beleive.

Sometimes he will even just buy whole fish from another fisherman, gut them, then flip them for double cause their gutted and good to go

Not a native btw, don't think any limitations apply to them seemingly

Nah, the Aboriginal Fishery is heavily regulated. But, the regulations are becoming convoluted through repeated Supreme Court of Canada rulings. For example, a 1994 ruling upheld the DFO's position that any catch caught under a Food Fishing license cannot be sold. However, the DFO went on to sign agreements with a few bands that allow catch caught under a Food Fishing license to be sold in exchange for giving up other rights. DFO did this because they expected the 1994 ruling to be challenged once more and perhaps not upheld.

but, on a lighter note:

I fish area 51 all the time during the spring but I avoid that place like the plague in the summer because the black flies are just brutal. The fishing is definatly better in the summer time but I come back with crazy bite marks all over my body that takes at least 2 days to heal. What's funny is I've tried all the brands of bug spray and it seems they're immune to it.

I hope you have a boat. If you do, along the weed line is usually where I catch my fish. I usually just constantly keep moving and if the fish are there, they will take it pretty quick. There is sunfish right where you launch a boat right by the gate for Pitt lake. Its like a foot of water but they just hang out right in the open. There isn't any bass until you reach the main channel. If you see beaver dams, fish usually hang out there. There are places that are really difficult to get too but you are rewarded with larger fish but its a pain in the ass to get too. Just keep moving and don't get lost in the marsh. Bring an electric fly swatter if you have one. Wear pants and a long sleeve. Its going to be hot as hell but the flies can't bite through it. If you ever see a porte bote in the marsh, its probably me so say hi if you see me.

nsmb 07-16-2014 09:17 PM

saveth... those black flies today, omg lol. I will for sure bring a electric fly swatter next time. Lots of action there on the frog, so addicting. Do you run a baitcasting set up with braided line? thinking of picking one up

saveth 07-16-2014 09:38 PM

I use a spinning combo with 12 pound mono (I know its overkill) but that's what it takes to rip my setup out of the weeds. Now you know why I avoid that place in the summer. I bet your feet are incredibly itchy right now haha. I'll be going to hatzic lake on Saturday. I usually don't fish that lake until late august but I'll give it a try since I want to test out my new trolling motor.

I caught some black crappie in hatzic lake. They weren't very big, but its still early for this lake. I'll probably go back in a month or so when they're a lot bigger. Right now the average size is about 5-6 inches long.

Good trip last week. Hauled in about 130lbs of Salmon, had a variety of spring, coho and sockeye. The biggest fish was a 28lb Spring I caught in the first hour on the first day.

Day 1:
http://www3.telus.net/bryster/Bamfie...715_140900.jpg
28lb spring, 16lb coho

Day 2:
http://www3.telus.net/bryster/Bamfie...716_180546.jpg
Two 8lb sockeye, one 14lb coho, and 8 red rock crab

Day 3:
http://www3.telus.net/bryster/Bamfie...717_125220.jpg
22 lb spring, 18 lb spring, 6 lb Green Lingcod

Day 4:
http://www3.telus.net/bryster/Bamfie...718_180528.jpg
Can't remember the size/species of the salmon, one 19lb Lingcod, 8 black rockcod, and a flounder.

I missed pictures of another 4 salmon on Days 2, 4 & 5.

What sucked is that we ended up throwing two coho back on the first day that we could have kept because we got some misinformation about what was open for the area. Oh well, I consider that's what gave us good karma for the rest of the trip.

At supermarket pricing of $2/100g that's retail value of $1200 on the salmon alone.

Woot!
