Anyone here do any fishing?
Figured a thread is warranted with the great weather we've been having.
I caught 5 of these guys yesterday at rice lake in north van.
Was fishing with number 6 hooks. Pink salmom eggs, 2 per hook. I had about a foot of leader and was using 1 ounce egg sinkers.
Casted out to the middle of the lake off the dock then let it hit bottom. Reeled in slowly until the line was tight. They strike relatively fast and are fun to catch on a light spinning setup. Was using an 8 foot daiwa spin matic with an abu garcia reel spooled with 6 lb test. |

i get good hits with pieces of cocktail shrimps, sometimes i'll cast out to the left of the dock and play with 1" nymphs behind 5 foot leader and an egg sinker and reel it in before touching bottom. if noone is around i break out the flyrod and stand in the middle of the dock. they love the flies there.

we're probably gonna get good openings for sockeye this year since its the 3-4th year since that HUGE sockeye run that came back...these coming in will be their offspring.

I think their was a fishing thread somewhere. Turns out not to many members fish recreationally. Right now I'm just crab fishing by the ferry terminal. Another member who is a commercial fisherman said the crab season right now is very slow. I can vouch for that as I find myself spending a lot more time on the water to not even catch my groups limit. This has been the worst season for crabbing that I can remember.

We do mostly river stuff, and mainly sturgeon there
Gonna be out on the river alot as the salmon come in this year though.
Crabbing out in indian arm last Thursday super successfull day, between 5 traps down for about 2.5 hours we brought in about 55 with 22 keepers! Great Success!

Nice little trout for dock fishing!
I'm fishing in Bamfield next week, one of my co-workers just got back from there and said the big springs are biting and you don't even have to go offshore for them.

Fearing wild fish to be nuclear contaminated, I fished at Rice lake a few times with a bit of success but later heard it could be genetically modified.
Those trouts taste pretty good if you add fresh orange juice and brown sugar while frying.
edit
Also last time I was there some guy was making these football field casts... another fisherman said he was using a water filled float of sorts to get such results.
Something to try

i've made those trigger snare's before. they're quite effective but are more so designed for larger coarse fish. a small lake trout generally wont have the power to trigger the snare unless you make the trigger itself extremely fine.

if you're interested in survival fishing, (as its illegal/unethical to leave a line unattended), you should look into the yo-yo reels |

Wow thats awesome!
After river fishing a half dozen times, I didnt like it for various reasons (as a warning to newbies; one being how easily you can drown wearing waders), so I started scheming to fish the Harrison which has lake like conditions using a cheap Walmart boat.

I was also looking up GMO lake fish in B.C. and it apparently isnt genetically modified as the eggs are treated in a way where the fish end up sterile. B.C. Fisheries says stocking triploid fish is the responsible approach - Columbia Valley Pioneer |

Not every thread has to perpetuate your political agenda.

Funny this thread just happens to pop up. It's my family's 20th year anniversary for our fishing derby, this weekend. Always a great time, even though I'd say about half of the years we haven't even caught any fish, hahahahah. But it's always great to get out on the lake, enjoy a beer and some company, catching fish is just the icing on the cake |

I'll be out in the ocean with my pops on his boat in the upcoming weeks. Possible 72 million sockeye? Yes please.
2010 there were 30M and we were in the deep blue sea when his fish finder said we were in 30ft of water with solid ground underneath. That's how thick the sockeye run was and we could have more than double this year!

Would probably deep fry them next time around as it was just 'ok'.
