I think I had one of those tyco sets as a kid.

A bunch of years ago Costco had a Carrera F1 slot set with the RB6 and F10. It is one of the few times where I impulse bought something, didn't care about price it just went in the cart.

The problem with those things is they don't last, the tracks don't handle being frequently assembled/dissassembled very well and the cars wear out.

Sounds like a real Porsche

I only just heard, but The Valley Bakery in North Burnaby is closing on Saturday! The owner wants to retire

My grandparents had been going to em since my dad was kid and even I'd go there every so often especially for my dad's birthday cake

I thought they would be there forever!

Only just heard but it's been in the news for a couple weeks now

https://www.burnabynow.com/local-new...-years-7341527

Whoops meant to put this in the vancouver thread :okay:

Yeah, pretty sad, really. I've been going there on occasion. I guess you can't count on your children wanting to continue the legacy. Most likely a real shitty job. My father did everything in his power not to encourage me from following his footsteps.

None of the workers wanted to get into the business, either. Nothing in life is forever...........

What the hell am I going to do for yummy desserts on Hats Off Day?

News about closing down has been going around for about a month now. My kids went last weekend knowing it was going to close down. I also think it was mentioned on revscene not that long ago, along with the local papers going all digital.

StylinRed 08-17-2023 02:15 PM

I actually just heard about it from tiktok had to look for a news article to see if it was true :/ all the employees have been there forever too what a shame

I was wondering why he didn't pass it down to his kids like his dad before him, but I just assumed he wanted that fat real estate paycheque (imagine they own the lot) didn't think ab it being hard work good point!

It's one thing for us as consumers to enjoy all the pastries, but it's another to be the producer of all these goods day-in day-out. Between being the main baker and possibly running the business in general (not sure what other help he gets), I can see his kids being turned off by the manual labor and/or went for a career that is more lucrative.

This is sad news. We've seen similar with chinese bakery's and restaurants in Calgary after decades of operating.

- Diamond Bakery: 30+ Years
- Golden Nugget: 46 Years
- Silver Inn: 47 Years

Just sad news in general.

Yup, my old man (commercial fisherman) did everything in his power to discourage me from following in his footsteps.

It was a great life, but it came with many hardships. He showed me the ropes (literally) and I knew right away, I was not cut out to be him.

Calloused hands, scars everywhere.............. no thanks.

It was a very local show and ran for a long time. Hometown heroes you can call them. And yes, Ted bitched a lot :lol

I remember watching this show regularly on PBS. I even had a subscription to their magazine.

Speaking of magazines, anyone remember these?

I liked the theme but I don't really remember anything about the show, meaning I probably didn't watch it past the theme LUL

I did love the Owl and Chickadee magazines, as well as the Owl TV show

How tf are kids learning random shit about the world now anyway? Through Tick Tock and Twitch? (not in Florida for long btw lol)

i got a hit of nostalgia the other day when i remembered that band-aids used to come with a little red string to open them. didn't even realize that went away until i was opening one and it just flashed in my memory.

I remember in the 90's you could buy a pair of ball bearings coated in that explosive powder, so you'd throw one into the air and when you caught it on top of the other, you'd get that explosion sound

Is that a false memory or what? wtf were they thinking making toys like that

Presto 03-26-2024 05:58 PM

I remember those balls. You could definitely purchase them at San Francisco.

punkwax 03-26-2024 08:45 PM

I had em

I have a feeling they weren’t coated in anything but had somthing in the middle that made the sound?

It was the same material that is in those gun caps, coated all over the ball. Eventually they would wear out as it gets used. You could rub them together to make a machine gun.. it's insane!

Edit: Here's the explanation! Potassium Chlorate and Sulphur aka gunpowder without the carbon

Hondaracer 03-26-2024 09:34 PM

Ah yea that’s not what I was thinking of

underscore 03-26-2024 11:57 PM

there used to be these little things you could throw on the ground that would make a small pop too. it was just a small thing wrapped in paper.
