This is not a Political forum, you should know better since you're a mod. Furthermore, questioning an official statement does not make an individual a conspiracy theorist. That term is way too loosely thrown around.

Questioning the official statement is literally a conspiracy theory. I think the problem is that too many people automatically think that is a negative term. If you have a theory that there is a conspiracy, feel free to talk about it openly if you want. Better than hinting that you know something other people don't...

Also as long as it's on topic, there's nothing wrong with discussing it. CiC's problem was that he derailed every single thread with bullshit. In this case, the topic is actually the NK/Sony/FBI issue. You're absolutely allowed to talk about it.

my thoughts:

1: MASSIVE publicity stunt
2a: North Korea had nothing to do with it
2b: could the hackers be the same hackers who hacked Sony in the past (playstation accounts, etc?)

Tone Loc 12-23-2014 10:19 AM

^ Probably a massive publicity stunt. Gotta give them props... TBH I wasn't planning on watching The Interview through legal means but now I kinda want to go see it in the theatres this weekend. And I'm sure a lot of people who didn't even know about the film is now aware and may watch it.

IMO it was too good to be true, Sony had already finished the film and spent a ton of money on it. Didn't make sense to just scrap it a week before release with the full knowledge that it would get leaked on torrent sites and they wouldn't make a single cent on it.

murd0c 12-23-2014 10:23 AM

the questions will cineplex actually play the movie when they said no before hand... This is by far the best publicity of a film ever tho

Lomac 12-23-2014 02:32 PM

North Korean cybervandalism or extreme viral marketing ploy, it doesn't really matter to me. I had no plans to see this movie (even though I'm a Seth Rogan and James Franco fan), and I still don't. I think it's tasteless to create a mainstream film about assassinating political figures who are still alive. If this was an indie production, then sure... it's then an art film more than anything (don't ask me why, it's what all the film buffs would see it as), but as a major production with the backing of a major studio... no.

Either way, still looks like a shitty movie that I wouldn't even bother torrenting or even watching on Netflix for free.

Only for Americans. Why do companies make it so hard to give them money?

BrRsn 12-24-2014 11:51 AM

Anyone found a way to stream it?

I'm thinking of using Hola to change my IP and using an american CC -- wonder if that'll work

lets just think about it...

Sony invests say a couple mil into a movie that they know will have some bad press, but they decide to shoot the movie anyways. The movie wraps up and turns out to be a shit movie in the eyes of the movie critics and die hard movie people (I for one like dumb movies, so I would've paid $12 to see this, many would not have). Sony dumps in more money to hype up the movie and catches the attention of DPRK. DPRK hacks sony (depends who you talk to apparently, but lets go with it). Supposedly the theaters get a whiff of this news and refuse to play it. The American gov't get involved, the President and Sony President have some words and low and behold Sony releases it on Online for $6. The key is they released it at 1/2 off the theater price (lets assume it's $12 everywhere - I don't know what the US price is).

What they effectively did was hype up, increase the hype x2, potentially double the eyeballs (think, average family of 5-6 people watching together with family on Christmas day vs. a couple watching it in theaters) and flood the market for 50% off.

This is no different than Manchu Wok handing out samples 30mins before closing and selling 2 item combo for $2 when retail is $4.

In the entertainment business, any publicity is good publicity. The more eyeballs you can get, the better it is. Just ask Mr. Murdoch.
