The '58 project has been out and about the past couple of days. Pretty sunny today, might have to hit the highway and really stretch its legs...

What's the hypothetical top speed on one of those beauties?

The interesting part about a beetle is the top speed is also it's cruising speed, they are designed to be driven with your foot to the mat all day long...though most of us cruise at about 80% throttle...my honest numbers below.

1958, with the stock 36hp engine - 110km/h (a more honest 90-100kph)
My 1958 with 1971 engine - 130km/h (a more honest 110-115kph)

My 1975 Beetle with the then 'new' fuel injected motor - 135km/h (did 120kph all day long on the Toronto 401 with oomph to spare for very slow passing)

My 1969 Beetle with a 1776cc custom built motor - 160 on the flat, 180 downhill.

The Rally Bug? Close-ratio gearing means it tops out at a useable 152kph, but will actually rev out to 165kph if you want to hear it scream. I was more interested in having useable gearing in the type of driving I do, vs top speed.

One thing you forgot to ask, is how long it takes to get there.

'58 - 36hp
my '58 w/1600 dual port - 60hp
'75 fuel injected - 48hp
my '69 w/1776cc - never measured, 90hp?
Rally Bug with 2110cc - Estimated 150hp

^ somehow I doubt most of us have the attention span or the cahonies to have one of those topped out.

dared3vil0 03-31-2015 10:20 PM

It's more about the experience than the actual speed in the rally bug i suspect.

I'm in edmonton, it was fucking nice yesterday, then like 6pm the wind started howling, and didn't quit all night, and this morning the snow started.

This fucking province is shit.

I really don't understand who chooses to live here on a permanent basis, it amazes me that there is more things in this province than just one massive paved highway leading you out east or to BC.

Yup. Its been fluctuating between below freezing to around +15 or so for the past month.
If it wasn't for work, I would be out of this shithole.
