Another Scammer!

Just finished reading the epic cell phone scam post and felt all sorts of emotions ranging from frustration, sadness, anger and delight.

I was scammed over a year ago but I had no idea what to do. I went to the police but they basically told me there is nothing they can do about it since I agreed in principle even though I did not receive any product or services for it.

A guy comes to my store pitching LED products and all that. Saying how he can get great prices on bulbs and such. It would save on power and hydro bills in the long run. He pitched his sale which would have cost over $5000. It was a big investment to change all the lighting so I didn't agree to the entire project. However I told him I would start with some simple changes, adding some strips along the window among other things. If it worked out I would proceed with the rest of the project.

He came back a few days later with some samples of what he could install. I picked out a few items. He sent me a quote asking for a deposit of $1000. I wrote him a cheque.

Then he told me he will order the products but would take 4-6 weeks to arrive.
- 8 weeks pass and he said the product is delayed.
- Another month later he said the equipment is still on the way, just waiting for some final parts, he's almost done getting everything together (this was where it started to get suspicious because he was only picking up the phone every 4-5 calls and not returning any of my messages)
- A few more weeks pass without a word so when I got a hold of him I told him that I would like my deposit back because it was taking way too long.

Now he comes up with some sob story about how the parts he purchased were not right so he had to return them and now his supplier is scamming him? I told him sorry but it's not really my business how you deal with your buyers but I need my deposit back.
He said he's in a financial bind and can't come up with the money to return to me. Begs me for a few months to work it out and make some money.

This then turned in a frustrating game of cat and mouse where he would not pick up the phone or answer my texts for days, sometimes over a week. He would tell me things like he had to sell his truck to make ends meet, please give him more time, etc. I went to his store to try and settle it in person but it was closed. His website has since been taken down too.

It's been roughly 5 months now since he last replied to my text message, his cell phone rings once and then goes to voicemail. His voicemail still says "Hi thanks for contacting "_____ lighting co", please leave a message" so I'm to believe he's still in business or worse, still scamming other stores/houses.

I've all but given up hope of seeing my money but the cell phone thread reminded me of this.
I've also filed a complaint to the BBB but no idea if that means anything.

I have his full name and number, and while reading through the cell phone thread I did something that I neglected to do and searched Facebook, and found him. Although I can't see much of his info as we are not friends? The last "public" update I can see on his page is from April 2012 but I don't know if he has private updates. His cover pic also has his company logo on it too.

Anything can be done Revscene detectives?

Ronin 01-28-2015 12:10 AM

Do you have a written contract?

Obsideon 01-28-2015 12:11 AM

I have his full name, email and number. I'm not entirely sure what the RS protocol is for this case. Can I put the info public?
On his facebook profile there's pics of him and his wife/gf vacationing in Mexico, and apparently he's a DJ?!

Unfortunately no, just the invoice.

It was a small job and didn't think much about it, never been scammed like this before. Maybe I'm stupid, but it wasn't really a "speaker out of a white van" scenario so I wasn't as cautious as I should have been. Learned my lesson that's for sure.
How these people can go around spending money they cheated from hard working individuals is sickening.

BEEB 01-28-2015 12:19 AM

It would benefit the whole community if you post his real name or company name here. Then, I'm sure someone must know somebody who know this guy.

Fuck RS protocol and scammer apologists. Let the fucker burn and do as you please with the info you have at your disposal.

This is a good example of apologists who think that scammers should be left for the law to deal with. This incident does bring back a couple memories from friends who have been scammed (one was a Craigslist concert ticket scam, the other an apartment rental scam). Both reported to the police but basically told both of them they're SOL - and there's nothing they either can, or will do (I forgot which).

Ok, his name is Rick McMaster. It was pretty easy to Facebook search, can't believe I didn't think of it sooner, although even then I wouldn't know what to do with it. I mean he's not responding to my phone texts I doubt a FB message would yield different results.

The company he operates is called Diode Lighting. A quick google search shows that he has 5 complaints with the Better Business Bureau with a F rating. So it's safe to assume I wasn't the first person he scammed?

Pulled this from his profile (he's on the left, the right is Gilbert Gottfried):

This was his FB cover banner.

Never do business with someone with a shitty logo

Never do business with a fat guy unless the business is food and he can't eat it all

Razor Ramon HG 01-28-2015 03:01 AM

Looks like his residential address is at 3067 Willow St, although you may need to find his unit number.

In addition, there is a business registered under 2126 Yukon St.

SkinnyPupp 01-28-2015 03:06 AM

He actually looks a bit like Mark Karpeles, literally the biggest scammer in known history (afaik)

In b4 Ulic unleashes his fury explaining how it's probably never happened before and there's no proof of other scams and you should be ashamed for trying to ruin this person's life over a one-time mistake, you dumb fucks.
Spoiler!

tiger_handheld 01-28-2015 06:42 AM

Set up a sting like those rental scam people.

Call from another number, request an "appointment" and meet him at another restaurant in your group.

smoothie. 01-28-2015 09:05 AM

This thread just doesnt have the same feel.

Time for a RS scam forum.

SkinnyPupp 01-28-2015 09:07 AM

It's not the same because the scammer isn't another member ripping people off for $400 and lying to cops about going to church. It's just some fucking scammer. Take him to small claims and get your $1000 back.

meme405 01-28-2015 09:09 AM

RS sure is starting off the year right...
