Burrows' last game in a Canucks jersey?

I'll be sad if that's true. :(

murd0c 04-11-2016 09:39 AM

Sadly I think his time is up since he can't really do what he did in the past anymore... That being said he came from the ECHL played with the best Canucks of all time and had years of great hockey and finally slayed us the Dragon when no one thought he was going to go anywhere. It sucks but that's life in the NHL being that style of player.

Ronin 04-11-2016 09:51 AM

Burrows is one of my favorite Canucks of all time. Guy never slacked and was a big game player for us during the most successful period of Canucks history.

SumAznGuy 04-11-2016 09:54 AM

What a shot by Laine with 1 second left to tie the game.

Look for Bob McKenzie's retweet with the video.

murd0c 04-11-2016 10:03 AM

the more highlights I see from Laine the more I kinda hope we get the second pick and not the first.

SumAznGuy 04-11-2016 10:07 AM

Markstrom and Tanev will play at the World Championships.
Hamhuis said no because of his current contract situation.

True but I like Matthews just because he plays the centre position. You can never have too many centres.

Henrik Sutter Matthews Horvat McCann Vey (:troll:)

-good TSN article about picking winners for a playoff hockey pool:

Statistically Speaking: The numbers to help win your playoff pool - Article - TSN

I'm picking two dark horses in the East for first round upsets over Tampa and Washington: Detroit and Philly.

Giroux averages over 1 point a game in the playoffs (1.07). :considered:

Giroux and Datsyuk are some my picks for a playoff pool. :considered:

This is what our cap situation looks like next season.

Cap hits in excess of ELC maximum of $0.925M (13):
D. Sedin ($7.000M)
H. Sedin ($7.000M)
R. Miller ($6.000M)
A. Edler ($5.000M)
A. Burrows ($4.500M)
C. Tanev ($4.450M)
B. Sutter ($4.375M)
L. Sbisa ($3.600M)
D. Dorsett ($2.650M)
J. Hansen ($2.500M)
C. Higgins ($2.500M)
J. Markstrom ($1.550M)
A. Rodin ($0.950M)

R. Luongo ($0.800M) [Salary Retention]

Total cap hit of $52.875M for 8 forwards, 3 defensemen, 2 goaltenders.

ELCs (14):
N. Tryamkin ($0.925M)
B. Hutton ($0.896M)
B. Horvat ($0.894M)
J. McCann ($0.894M)
J. Virtanen ($0.894M)
B. Gaunce ($0.863M)
J. Subban ($0.755M)
G. Brisebois ($0.734M SR)
J. Labate ($0.680M)
A. Sautner ($0.675M)
M. Stewart ($0.655M)
A. Cederholm ($0.645M)
C. Cassels ($0.631M)
E. McEneny ($0.585M)

Other players under contract (2):
A. Biega ($0.750M)
R. Bachman ($0.575M)

Players under contract: 26/45 skaters, 3/5 goaltenders

RFAs (9):
L. Vey ($1.000M QO)
S. Baertschi ($0.945M QO)
E. Etem ($0.893M QO)
A. Pedan ($0.832M QO)
M. Granlund ($0.806M QO)
L. Blomstrand ($0.697M QO)
J. Cannata ($0.660M QO)
A. Grenier ($0.644M QO)
M. Zalewski ($0.633M QO)

UFAs (9):
R. Vrbata
D. Hamhuis
B. Prust
M. Bartkowski
Y. Weber
R. Kenins
T. Fedun
A. Friesen
B. Jones

The salary cap for the 2016-2017 season is expected to be around $74M. That leaves the Canucks about $21M to fill 6 forward spots and 4 defense spots. Baertschi, Horvat, Hutton, and Tryamkin should be locks to make the roster (assuming they're not traded). Horvat, Hutton, and Tryamkin are all on ELCs.

We don't know yet what Baertschi's contract demands are, but he's due a raise from his current $0.900M. He's an RFA with arbitration rights coming off a 15-goal, 28-point season. Normally, I would say it should be a 2 x $1.500M-$2.000M bridge deal (based on past RFA comparables), but given it's Dim Jim, all bets are off.

So that would give us roughly $16.5M to fill 4 forward spots and 2 defense spots.

Buying out Higgins makes a lot more sense than buying out Burrows if we were to buy out one of them due to Burrows' front-loaded contract.

Buying out Burrows would save $2.000M in cap space in 16-17 and would cost us $1.000M in cap space in 17-18.

Buying out Higgins would save $1.667M in cap space in 16-17 and would cost us $0.833M in cap space in 17-18.

As Burrows has a substantially lower salary than cap hit next year, he could be a prime candidate for a trade with 50% salary retention ($2.250M cap hit, $1.500M salary) to a cap floor team. That would save us $2.250M in 16-17 with no cap penalty the following season and it would save Aquillini $0.5M.

If we buy out Higgins and trade Burrows w/ 50% retention, that would give us about $20.5M to fill 6 forward spots and 2 defense spots. Fill a few of those with guys like Etem, Granlund, Gaunce, and, hopefully, Matthews for cheap, sign Hamhuis for another season for $2-3M, and take a run at some high-priced help in the UFA market.

^^ I really don't see Philly beating the Caps. As good as the Flyers have been playing, I think in a 7 game series they will be in tough against a Caps team that seems different from previous years.

and with that I think they could McCann with how his season went. Don't wrong I would be more than happy if we got the first pick but if we got second instead I won't be as bummed as I would of been earlier in the year.

I would be shocked if he's not playing in the NHL next season.

He put up 22 points playing primarily on the 4th line, was 9th on the team amongst forwards in Corsi Relative, 5th amongst forwards in D-Zone faceoff starts. He's only a year removed from 18 goals ... from the 3rd line.

It's pretty obvious that he wasn't utilized to his full potential by WD. While guys like Grenier, Etem, Vey, etc. got 1st line duties with the Sedins when Hansen was injured, Burrows continued to be buried on the 4th line. Same could be said of Vrbata (and it destroyed Vrbata's trade value).

If he's bought out, he'll get a 1 x $1M contract pretty easily, IMO. Traded with retention is definitely a possibility, IMO.

BTW, Boeser heading back to the NCAA :fuuuuu:

dbaz 04-11-2016 10:50 AM

boeser confirmed on twitter hes returning to college

I think its a good move, his team had lots of veteran players, and he is not nhl ready so theres no reason to rush him. I want to see what he can do as a leader on his college team

reports on demko are that hes pissed about losing in the final 4, and is looking to see what the team does (his teammates, and recruits) before deciding

Armind 04-11-2016 10:55 AM

If Demko returns, that's possibly a huge blow to our prospect pool. Hopefully he doesn't pull a douchebag move and use that stupid fucking NCAA loophole on us.

dbaz 04-11-2016 10:59 AM

I see demko signing here by the end of summer, I think hes just hoping lots of players on the team don't sign and leave, but its already happening. add to the fact he would be in the ahl with McCann. im assuming his parents want him to finish school, like all parents do with their kids, so that's probably adding to the pressure of leaving his teammates

stretcher is also apparently down to the canucks and oilers. wander if our selling point is simply, look at what happened to Schultz lol

How is it a huge blow to our prospect pool? Unless he stays in the NCAA and then goes to free agency. He is building confidence in a successful environment in Boston so it is not to bad if he stay's, unless he says fuck Vancouver and goes where he wants!

It seems like you missed the word 'possibly' in my sentence.

No I saw your 'possibly' But that still does not clarify if you mean the current Utica pool or do you mean it will be a blow to our pool in the future if he goes to free agency.. Man, if he does not turn pro this summer the media in Vancouver are going to go nuts, then for sure the guy wont sign here lol!

There was no prospect pool this year either. Combo of Bachman and Cannata.

highfive 04-11-2016 11:41 AM

If Demko doesn't sign, I would trade him, Boeser, and a pick for 3rd overall pick?

Might work in NHL 16 but don't know if dim jim can pull it off haha.

murd0c 04-11-2016 11:43 AM

hell no... We need Demko!!

It'll possibly be a blow for the reasons you said. Vancouver media will be hounding him, he'll have the option of signing wherever he chooses after he finishes school next year, and we don't have another legitimate prospect goaltender in the system (Cannata is our only other "prospect" goaltender, but he's a 26-year-old AHL 1B).
