Don't knock it until you try it. Felt very safe. Self driving is here.

I’m almost certain I’m gonna buy this thing instead of a Tesla as my first EV.

Surprisingly the Euro Buzz is not doing that well in Europe based on the Smith and Sniff Podcast I listen to regularly. They mentioned UK dealers had leftover units to push at the end of last year which was a surprise to them considering how much fanfare the vehicle got when it was first announced.

I've sat inside and played around with both the Euro and US-spec Buzz at this point. It's a nice boxy vehicle with a lot of retro-modern flair, but it's not that interesting of a vehicle after its novelty wears off. There are a lot of harder plastics inside and the cabin is a bit small compared to the typical minivans we get here. My least favorite thing is that tiny window in the second row - the opening mechanism is cool but I wish it didn't look like an afterthought.

This is an honest question, but what the eff are you doing the entire time to occupy yourself and not fall asleep?

I mean it's almost like you're going on an incredibly slow and really annoying airplane at that point isn't it? You have to pay attention enough to satisfy some safety nanny system that won't let you just go to sleep or watch videos or something, but you're also doing nothing... I feel like I would find that situation incredibly frustrating. At least driving and inputs give me something to do on the journey.

It's about the energy that your mind uses while driving. I do several long drives every year, and before FSD, I always arrived super tired. The mind just couldn't take much more after 8hr+ driving, keeping lane, follow traffic, speed check... etc.

Since I got FSD, I'd usually set it and just kinda spaced out. Yes, I do keep an eye on what's on the road, but my mind is not on keeping the car centered or whatever. All that is taken care of by the car. If I keep my hands on the steering, and eyes looking to the front, it goes a long way before nagging.

It's hard to understand without actually using it constantly. But what I can say is, a passenger can't tell who's driving if I activate the FSD at random and don't tell them. Just the other day I drove my FIL to Costco and he was shocked when I told him I stopped driving after the first corner leaving our house. He was like "even after we've gone into the parking lot?"... yep... even passing those cars waiting in line for gas. That's all auto.

Yeeee - I find driver assist helps me stay aware of what's going on around me, especially after 700-1000km driving in a day.

Just cuz I'm not pressing the gas / steering

Doesn't mean I'm not watching what's around me or what the car's doing (cars cutting in? curve and merge lane coming up? what's in my rearview)

My opinion from working in self driving is that FSD architecture is fundamentally flawed for its operational domain (all roads).

Needs to improve sensor positioning and redundancy, compute power, and fault recovery to consider it for city usage.

Big fan of automation here. Just finished elons latest biography and from what I understand the self driving works off road lines? What happens if the paint is worn away or covered in snow? I can see it working great in many climates but the paint lines get worn off here every winter.

I do not know the technical answer, but I've been in my friends Tesla M3P 4-5 years ago in Calgary in -45C with snow drifting across the highway and no clear indication of where lines were and it was still able to stay in lane and negotiate turns, etc.

It only fucked up when the road curved to the left and a vehicle in the lane next to us was already into the curve but we weren't yet and it thought that vehicle was coming into our lane and it emergency braked, which kind of sucked especially in icy conditions, almost sent us into a skid.

The two problems y'all are referring to are called Localization (where is my car in space) and Path Planning (where am I going to drive).

Both are general weaknesses of FSD since it doesn't have HD maps (precise maps including lane info); it tries its best to infer based on its cameras in your environment & the cars in front.

Tesla admitted FSD will only ever be Level 2+++++++
super capable but risky
will always need driver supervision and intervention

MB have hit Level 3 in a more limited operational domain
u can take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel on freeways within Cali and to Vegas during daytime and when traffic's under 40mph.
https://www.mbusa.com/en/owners/manuals/drive-pilot

The real robotaxis that have like 40k+ in sensors are level 4/5;
vehicle does all the driving tasks.

If I still have to pay attention then I'd rather just be driving. Even if it got to a point where I didn't have to pay attention I'd have a hard time trusting my life on something like this, especially if it came down to a quick evasive maneuver.

If you're using it to space out chances are you're fucked if it came down to a split second decision anyways so I don't really like that argument.

Man I can barely relax on the highway with cruise control and distance monitoring on, much less allowing my car to self-drive.

Control issues, I suppose.

I agree, but here's my counterargument:

In super dense urban areas, the car keeping distance for me has saved my ass. I was busy tracking / planning my move around 7 lanes of rush hour traffic and 3 onramps (think Seattle / NYC / Toronto) within a quarter mile.

I think the whole self-driving thing, once accomplished, would be a discussion like we had here before about backup cameras.

It's something to improve your life quality and ease of things that you have to deal with day to day. Is it absolutely necessary? Probably not for most people here who know how to drive. But is it nice to have? Hell yeah because life is so much easier.
