X5 drives better than RX. yes it does, a fucking shoe box with 4 wheels probably drives better than the RX. But does that matter as a daily driver? you want PLUSH COMFORT and ultra-reliability. Especially if yerr woman drives it.

The RX you drove (prior to mine? 3rd gen I take it, aka my dads 400h bodystyle) was absolutely garbage for body control. You take a turn and you feel like you'll flip over and die. My wife 4th gen RX does a better job at this so at least you don't feel like you'll die but honestly who cares. its an SUV.

Your x5 makes more sense than your average macan / cayenne buyer who purely buys it on badge merit alone. At least you can pretend to say you're saving gas with the PHEV (unless that battery goes, and then your shit out of luck)

Chiming in on the X5/4th gen RX (and Kia) based on my mom's POV as she has experience with all of them. She was a die-hard Toyota/Lexus buyer until recently when EVs started shifting her preferences.

4th Gen RX - This is her go-to car when in town. She likes its comfort, solid build (no squeaks, leather + soft surfaces), easy entry/exit, and reliability. True to Lexus form, it’s been problem-free for the 7 years we’ve had it.

G05 X5 - We rented these for road trips last year and she loved it as a passenger. It had more space, comfier seats (with the comfort package), and a smoother engine. She liked the "BMW" appeal but was wary of the high ownership costs, but also believes one with an EV powertrain will address her reliability concerns. It's likely a BMW EV will be on her radar in the future.

KIA Soul EV - Her immediate reaction, when she saw the car for the 1st time at the airport, was: "I don't trust Korean metal, it's no good", followed by a hint of embarrassment and asking if I was in financial trouble. It wasn't until she saw my Steroid Camry that she felt more at ease. She did eventually warm up to the KIA after learning how good it was at gobbling all her garden center and Costco hauls.

Oh she could, she has what it takes just doesn't care most of the time. But if we are paying money and she had to choose, she would choose the better driving one.

Every time we've test drove a MB she's walked away and said no. Steering wheel feels bad she said. We are at a point where I didn't even bother looking at GLE when I was shopping for the new SUV. She knows what steering feel is and what is a more progressive brake pedal and I'm proud of her for that. She just can't really put it into the correct terms we use. We've also test drove the Cayenne PHEV and she complained about the brakes because it wasn't progressive, with the regen causing it to have effectively a two stage brake pedal with poor feel.

She likes the idea of a Lexus, but other than the 3G IS, every time we've drove one she's come away disappointed. I should drag her out and have her drive your LC. She might tell you it sucks :lawl:

She thinks Porsches are too expensive and the slight increase in refinement and engineering for a 30-40% increase it price isn't worth it for her. Nor does she like the idea of banging doors in a 150k vehicle.

So really that leaves us in BMWs, and that's why it's her third one, technically. (I count our Mini as BMW)

I get it. The bmw driving signature is addictive. My wife used to only drive bmws and it took a long time to convince her to drive a Lexus. Even her RX I didn’t consult her about anything. I just came home and told her surprise I bought you a car.

I'm sort of tempted to get a used g55 or g63. Apparently they are pretty compact given how boxy they are. Ultimate mall crawler that can actually off road. But I don't think it will be very comfortable to daily and the mpgs monkaS

Of everyone I've talked to who've owned one, 100% of the surveyed sample said it's a TERRIBLE car to live with. It looks great but drives like absolute shit, super sensitive to cross winds, bouncy, doesn't turn worth shit (turning circle), drinks gas like a cow drinks water :pokerface:

I used to assume it would be the same for my wife, a total non-enthusiast. Like I never thought she'd give a shit about body control, torque curve, steering feel and all that.

Turns out she does actually care, but for the predictability. She basically likes it to be like a video game where the inputs are super obvious and immediate. She hates a mushy pedal or vague steering because it actually confuses her lol.

She'd previously only ever really driven her parents' Toyota Camry, which she said was frustrating. That was surprising to me because I would've figured that was the most basic possible appliance car, so of course it should be easy to drive.

In contrast, our BMW [i3] has been a great experience for her, for sort of enthusiast reasons. The throttle is linear, and being an EV it is drawing from a limitless well of torque - more throttle more go, and never even a pause from a downshift. The brakes are tight, and brain-dead simple to modulate. The steering is super tight ratio and takes the car right where you point it. And the suspension is adequately forgiving while being stiff enough that there isn't that body jiggle that usually comes with a super plush ride. It "just works": from controls to motion, it's entirely straightforward and predictable.

Though for passengers, I can totally see where there's no beating a Lexus.

^ Put it in better words than me. Body control is surprisingly a HUGE one with my wife. If the car has poor body control she gets car sick. Part of it is also on the driver. I'm decent enough with the throttle and brakes she's rarely car sick with me, but there are a few friends who she would not sit with.

yeah but modern day cars all pretty much drive the same. The difference between the latest RX / X5 / GLE is negligible. Considering that half the suppliers are shared between the automakers, no wonder everything is so generic.

Same ZF gear box on the x5/GLE/Range rover. The rack I'm sure is from some supplier as well.

I've tried to get her a new SUV. I had her sit and drive the X3/X5/Range Rover/GLE and nothing appealed to her. She liked how her old RX handles (predictable like you said rat) and its something she doesn't need to think about to operate.

I guess ill have to drop a random mid sized luxury SUV into her life sooner or later because I don't want her to miss out on some modern safety features. Although I don't think we are missing out on that much considering her RX is only 2018 and it already has a lot of autonomous braking, collision detection, cross traffic alerts, etc. But at 100,000km it could use a refresh.

Was thinking the new GX but body on frame and even higher might make her scared. Also at those prices, I might as well spring for the LX and get that insane rear seat executive edition.

None hybrid 2gr AWD is averaging 12.17l/100km

With the hybrid you should be in the 7-8/100km. It could be the battery pack on that hybrid is dying. How many KMs on that highlander ? What year ? Because even my dads 400h is getting 9-10/100

i average 7.9 but my driving is mostly highway, im sure if i was in the city, it would be closer to 6, my prius was 4.3

Well I mean Toyota never went beyond this, same with Honda 3.5ish V6 about 270hp. It's not that fast but it has enough pep. I'm surprised it gets this mpg cuz it's hauling so much weight + awd. On my 3uz rwd I was getting avg of 14+l/100km and that's only 300hp/320tq. But the difference between them isn't that noticable on regular driving. And I guess 6 speed vs 5 speed does help.

Even with the newer Toyotas 4 bangers have always been like appliances + hybrid is just for mpg and not power.
