When I was a fleet manager before at the popo the first thing we did with every single Toyota we leased or bought was replace the battery because it couldn’t handle any equipment installs (radio, siren, lighting, etc ) without dying within a couple of months…

And that was 8-12 years ago. Nice to see nothing has changed hahaha

Nah... the Chinese wouldn't let anything goes to waste. All the parts are stripped that are either spares and batteries, they'd get what they can.

EV batteries are actually highly recyclable. The main issue is how to do it at scale and how to actually get them to one place cheaply.

And when batteries are no longer good enough for EV, it's still more than good enough for a lot of applications. This is where the grey area in China comes in. They will slap these used batteries on a lot of things... like off-grid power storage for small remote villages and whatnot. There's a market for it.

The recycling part is no longer true for LFP.
There's no valuable materials in the battery so the cells are not commercially viable to recycle.

Yes, I know.

By recycling, I didn't mean always taking it apart fully and bring it down to raw material state. But rather, "repurpose" into something else.

I had the idea of converting Tesla battery packs into giant powerwall at home. But the necessary labour of electricians who know how to do in Canada is way too expensive. And as it's not regulated per se, it's a no-no in the eye of home insurance companies. So I had to scrap that idea.

But not so much of an issue in China.

if anyone experienced with toyota Lexus Hybrid batteries from 2010-2015:

what's the expected lifespan, and what's the going rate locally to replace?

any other items on these hybrids your typical shop wouldnt want to work on?

i take it you cant drive it like a ICE if the hybrid dies and parts become really scarce?

It's like $1-2k to rebuild, kits are available and easy to do in driveway.

Be VERY careful of 3rd gen hybrid from 2010-2014.
Prius C/Standard/V, Lexus CT all had head gasket, electronic brake booster, and oil consumption issues.

1 yr warranty, remanufactured pack, $1k CAD: https://greentecauto.ca/shop/hybrid-...hybrid-battery
2 yr warranty, $1200 CAD: https://greentecauto.ca/shop/hybrid-...hybrid-battery

OR

Brand new OEM Battery for $2.7k CAD:

My brother in law sold a 2014 prius that had about 190000km about a yr ago, original battery was still going strong if that helps

The heavier Toyota hybrids are like that because their EV motor and regen are too weak.
V6 and Turbo 4 setups all suck: Tacoma Hybrid gets worse mileage than F150 Hybrid.

Meanwhile, F150 Lightning regen does 95% of the stopping, even with towing.

My cousin had a 2014 as well with 245,000 miles (not KM!) The car was destroyed in an accident but the battery had no problems.

Yeah the batteries are really fine.
It's the head gaskets and brake actuators (4k repair, same issue as LS460).

Yeah, that definitely seems like it's part of the puzzle.

When I put the thing in EV mode, it baaarely moves from a dig. And if done while rolling, barely maintains speed even on flat ground.

Whereas when I try doing the same things in my dad's RAV4 hybrid of the same vintage, it's reasonably zippy still.

They must've just reused the same hybrid motors despite a huge difference in vehicle weight.

The part that doesn't add up is that nobody seems to have an issue with fuel economy with their same vintage RX400h, which should be the exact same vehicle just even heavier.

Isn't the RX400h like 3-400lbs lighter?

Are we sure it's a Toyota? Sounds like a Honda product to me.

It’s probably cuz his highlander was built in herp a derp Indiana . Another sad North American Toyota / Lexus product that can’t hold a candle to the J VINs.

They were showing the Scout outside my office today.

Looks Bronco sized but with way more cargo room because of the solid axle.
Front trunk also lets you sit in it, unlike Rivian.

Pickup truck has a 5'5" bed, compared 5' in the Gladiator and 4.5' in Rivian.
This means you can fit a 56cm road bike without taking off a wheel.

Hopefully VW x Rivian collab means that Rivian will get good driver assist.
The current ones really suck.
