that concussion protocol call on Raanta was interesting
there's already conversation saying that what if players purposely target goalies heads with hits/shots to get them out of the game temporarily to gain an advantage
Lundquist was pissed having to come in cold on short notice

Lol Gillis still got that fire.
TL; DR Gillis told Ed Willes to go fuck himself via text after he criticized MG's regime.
Spoiler!
Quote:
It was with great interest I followed the recent The Province vs Old Canucks regime scrimmage.
For those who may have missed it, it unfolded in Ed’s popular “musings” column and in it, it appeared he boiled down the GMMG era to this one sentence:
“On a related subject, Mike Gillis’s reign as the Canucks GM was marked by too many personnel miscalculations and too many misses at the draft table.”
This brief summary definitely got the attention of that old regime, and the following week, Ed told this story:
“Last week we had an item about Mike Gillis’s regime in which we opined the Canucks made too many poor personnel decisions and mistakes at the draft table under Gillis’s watch, but his insistence on playing a speed-and-skill game ushered in the most successful era in Canucks’ history.
That seemed like a fair assessment of the Gillis years and it certainly wasn’t meant to cause offence, but the former Canucks GM didn’t think so.
The next morning I got a text which read, among other things: “I will be happy to tell you personally next time I see you to go (perform an act which is biologically impossible).”
At least he’ll tell me personally.”
I quite like reading Ed and hope to be working with him for a long time and don’t think he wrote the first item with malice.
I just believe it’s how many now reflect on the era now because of two core reasons; one, the Canucks didn’t get that ring; and two, it ended badly.
The market will eventually, and likely dramatically, re-assess the 2008-14 Canucks. History will see it far differently than many people see it now.
Gillis was hired to do one thing, win. That was the mandate. Do whatever it takes to get a Stanley Cup. It nearly happened, and it should have happened, and on the way, the Canucks won two Art Ross trophies, a Hart, a Selke and, yes, a GM of the year.
At the end, they had a plan in place for a full-on rebuild where they were even going to use the word “rebuild,” but that was not something which was going to be allowed to happen in Vancouver.
Considering the history of this franchise, the Gillis-era will some day get its restoration, because the story should probably be remembered this way:
1, Genuinely great salary cap management
2. An outstanding job surrounding an elite core with a supporting cast good enough to push that core over the top.
3. The unrivalled golden era of Canucks hockey.
And with all of that said, here is that text:

Canucks winning unwinnable games and doing things that make sense.
What the fuck is going on

The Gillis era (barring the Aquaman influence in the final years) was easily the best management we've had in the past 20 years. I can't speak about the years leading up to the 94 run as I was too young to comprehend it.
Since Quinn, we've had:
Keenan
Burke
Nonis
Gillis
Benning
Burke is the only one that even comes close. Keenan and Nonis were unmitigated disasters. Benning is trending in that direction, IMO.
Burke made some great moves like putting together the deal that got us the twins.
I remember Nonis more for trading away picks for rental players.
But Nonis also pulled off the Luongo trade.
Was Keenan a GM? I don't recall that. Then again, I hated the Messier move and stripping Linden of the C.

It's fun to wonder if GMMG was still given full autonomy after the 2012 washout in the playoffs. But alas that's not how pro sports works in most cases unfortunately.
He was one of few who championed speed and skill like Chicago even when LA/Boston won their cups after 2010. When he was dismissed he seemed to continue to insinuate that he wanted speed/skill while others in the organization wanted size/truculence.
Sure he was a dick, especially if you heard his interview with Bmac/Moj on 1040. Sure he was arrogant. But he also knew what a team needed to look like and trend towards to be successful in the NHL.
If Nonis didn't pull the trades he did, you think Gillis would've done so well?
I just checked. Nonis is only responsible for 2 great trades.
Luongo and trading for the 04 3rd round pick which netted us Edler.

He did sign Kes back from the Flyers offersheet and then re-signed him to a pretty good 3 year contract too
His roster moves were ok.
His drafting was horrid though.

I don't think you can have a perfect score GM. The only issues I have is that basically ever since the drafting of the Sedins, we never seem to be able to develop our next core to support them. Either the drafts picks were traded away or they became nothing.
I'm referring to the first rounders and second rounders where they have the highest chance of making it.
6 players over 13 years. Out of that, only 3 I would consider as core players in Kesler, Schneider, and Horvat.
Benning comes in and drafted Virtanen, McCann, Demko, Boeser, Juolevi.
It's still too early to tell on Benning picks but hell, it's a lot better than the Burke, Nonis, Gillis era of picks. As long as he stops trading away 2nd rounders and actually draft somebody.
Basically our scouting has fucked us big time over the years. Not only that but having ownership who wants to win now (I'd be the same if I'm the owner) and GM trading away picks like candy (not just Benning). We are paying for it today.
It's like we we have a big mortgage and spend without saving and we end up biting our own asses years down the road.
so virtanen is in the ahl now. but apparently its only for 2 games then hes back up again. wtf
I think he is only playing in those games to get a ton of minutes and to get some playing time since they are on the east coast. When they are done and go home I guess they will need him as insurance if any more forwards get injured. So this is kinda not really showing him a message more of trying to get him some games in. If it was to show him a message he would be there longer which I think would be a better option. If he is only going down for two games and then getting sent back up just to sit in the press box like what is the point of that. Also I don't know if anyone was in the same boat as me but when skille sauced that pass to Sven for an assist I knew there that Virtanen wasn't getting back in anytime soon.

How are Rodin and Gaunce considered players while Umberger and Raymond not?
Umberger has almost 800 career games and Raymond is over 500.

Yeah, what gives.... LOL
