'O Canada' overwhelmingly voted in favor to be gender neutral

I get it, but really? This was a pressing issue? I normally support "progression", but frankly, this is bullshit that this was voted on among other pressing issues.

Dying MP's gender-neutral O Canada bill passes final Commons vote - Politics - CBC News

Quote:

Dying Liberal MP Mauril Belanger's private member's bill to make the national anthem more gender neutral cleared its final hurdle in the House of Commons today, passing by a vote of 225 to 74.

Bill C-210, which would change the second line of the anthem from "in all thy sons command" to "in all of us command," will now go to the Senate. Bélanger was in the House for the vote.

After the vote nearly all MPs in the House stood and sang the national anthem.

The anthem change has been a Bélanger cause for years but has taken on far greater urgency in recent months after he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and his condition rapidly deteriorated.

The outcome of today's vote appeared to be a foregone conclusion early on as most Liberals and New Democrats supported the measure going into the vote, while the Conservatives, who oppose the bill, have run out of political tactics to slow it.

But the bill will still need to clear the Senate before it becomes law.

Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth, the bill's sponsor in the Upper Chamber, told CBC News she believes the legislation has enough support to pass but it's unclear whether that can happen before the Senate rises for the summer.

It's not a pressing issue but I don't see a problem with modernising it. For me I'd rather remove "God keep our land" from the anthem first. I never sing that part, I usually just say "O Canada" during it. I suppose that's what people could do if they really care about "all thy sons command"

Doing things for no other reason than "tradition" is the most bullshit thing ever.

Mr.C 06-15-2016 08:55 PM

The English anthem is terrible. I'd rather institute a translation of the French version.

ImportPsycho 06-15-2016 09:00 PM

What's next? remove He/She from dictionary? or just He because She already contains the word He.

Yup, that god shit has to go.......... before anything else.

I thought I was the only one

CRS 06-15-2016 09:51 PM

This is actually makes it resemble more of the original version than when it was changed to "all thy sons command"

nabs 06-15-2016 09:57 PM

The more I think about it, the more I feel like they did it really soon to give the MP a legacy in Canadian history.

I'm okay with the new anthem, but it will get some getting used to, it doesn't sound right just right now.

StylinRed 06-15-2016 10:17 PM

What a waste of time and money...

yray 06-15-2016 10:21 PM

they should remake this video at the same time and
you guys dont sing the french version :fuckthatshit:

What if it went "in all thy white peoples' command"

Adorkami 06-15-2016 10:36 PM

then people would bitch about white privilege more. I'm not a religious person but I don't want to change something because on my (lack of) religious views and force it upon others so I'd prefer "god" to stay, as well as "native land" people will probably want changed for not including people that immigrated to Canada. Just leave it as is, which is how the majority of Canadians want it when they were polled in 2010.

StylinRed 06-15-2016 10:38 PM

But it doesn't, and that isn't an equivalent comparison anyhow, but even If it did say that...

the cost of writing legislation, the readings, the publications, the debates, delay tactics, the process of passing through the levels of govt., until Royal assent, is too costly to worry about a couple of lines in an old af song

I don't care about the change, just the bureaucracy and costs to do so -_-

I know it doesn't, that's not the point. The point is to try to put yourself in someone else's mindset

People constantly bitching about "the cost" because there is nothing else to argue about. There is a "cost" to everything. Plenty of much shittier things "cost" much more, and nobody complains about those.

I couldn't agree with you more.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. But I guess we have to now just to cater to a select few who bitch and whine about stupid things such as wanting to use a womens bathroom just because an 8 year old boy knows hes a woman on the inside. If its that much of a problem, use the staff bathroom, if you're in public use the family washroom that most places have. It's no better than shopping at christmas and paying for an item and the cashier says "have a merry chri...happy holidays".

I'd like to keep the anthem just the way it is.

to the transgenders - I don't care if you add some breasts or cut off your dick and play dress up, you're still the gender as you were born.

You would be singing a different tune if someone you cared about had some of these issues. Just saiyan.

We all need to walk a mile in their shoes to understand it. I don't have any friends or relatives who are transgender, but that doesn't mean I stop trying to understand it. This world would be a much better place if we all tried to be a little more tolerant. I was like you, Stewie. I made fun of gays and anything other than what I was.......... I then realized everyone has the same hopes and dreams as I do. People are people and we need to respect each other.

MarkyMark 06-16-2016 06:23 AM

Topics like this are annoying as fuck because if you're against it you're labeled as a hater who doesn't support the LGBTQ. I'm about the biggest atheist there is and it's never even once crossed my mind to get upset about the word God in our anthem either.

It amazes me the senseless shit people get upset about these days, in some ways I think they just make an issue out of anything just to see what they can get away with.

You want the word faggot out of an old Dire Straights song? Done.

You want to change the national anthem over the word 'son'? All you had to do was ask.

I've always supported people being what they want to be, it's a free country live your life how you want. That being said, no matter what you identify as, a whiny bitch is a whiny bitch. Some people aren't content unless they have a new issue to complain about.

This is Canada and by golly no ones feelings will be hurt on our watch.

GLOW 06-16-2016 07:29 AM

hai gais lets change the anthem...

will still be sung the same way by fans at hockey games

:troll: LUL

Mr.HappySilp 06-16-2016 07:59 AM

Don't care and don't give a shit. There are more important matters we should look into (IE housing market, job market)

I don't make fun of them. They can be whatever they want to be... If they want to be transgender go for it, just don't make me cater to their specific needs about having the word "thy sons command" changed because it now offends them. People are people and we may need to respect each other but in reality we don't. Do I respect you? absolutely, you've never done anything to make me not. I may respect most people, but some people are a lost cause in my books (some people, not generalizing a specific person to represent a group)

123654123 06-16-2016 10:01 AM

ffs why don't we just get drake to write a new anthem :troll:

originalhypa 06-16-2016 10:52 AM

holy shit, I just realized that I forgot some of the words.

Good thing I figured this out now, and not while standing on the red carpet at the Canucks game.....

from memory:

Quote:

Oh Canada, our true north strong and free.
durr, durr, doo, da da da da da dee.
With glowing hearts we see the rise, the true north strong and free. From far and wide, oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land, glorious and free, Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee. Oh canada, we stand on guard for thee.

So how far off was I?

supafamous 06-16-2016 10:53 AM

For the record, this is a righting of a wrong. The 1908 version, the most commonly accepted "original" is gender neutral and was changed in 1980. Why shouldn't our national anthem be inclusive of both men and women?

If anything it's rather disgusting that the Conservatives continued to fight this issue for so many years - this should have been a minor bill (of which we have many) and one that shouldn't have attracted so much attention.

The Maple Leaf Forever..........

Sang this in school. IMHO so much better than O' Canada, but what can you do?

Spoiler!

Things were different back then. As kids, we had to read the bible and sing the lords prayer. Didn't matter if you were Sikh, Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, etc.

And, the Queen's portrait hung in every hallway. I am a bit of a closet Empire Loyalist...... just a tad, LOL.

For the Queen!! And, Rule Britannia! Tee hee
