Rio 2016 Olympic opening ceremony: What to expect
Quote:

Don't expect anything too pricey with regards to Friday's spectacle. The budget for the required four ceremonies (opening and closing for the Olympics and Paralympics) was slashed to $55.9 million US from its original $113.9 million price tag.
Quote:

The environment will have a large role in the overall theme, as would be expected of a nation home to the Amazon rainforest.
Quote:

Organizers are planning on showcasing Brazil's love of samba and its annual carnival with costumes that celebrate the human figure … by covering up very little.
Quote:

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen will be involved in some way, but the specifics are murky.
Quote:

Soccer legend Pele has been offered the honour of lighting the Olympic flame, though he will have to cancel a prior scheduled engagement in order to attend.
What to expect from the 'sexiest' opening ceremony in Olympic history

For some reason, I'm not remotely interested in these Olympics.

Winter Olympics for sure.

Maybe this thread will get me more interested............ 'cause RS knows everything.

adambomb 08-05-2016 06:58 AM

I made this thread because the last one got all tainted with discussion about communism.

Hopefully this one can stay on track with posts about athletic accomplishments and maybe a sprinkling of stories about Olympic related theft. :smug:

Yeah it's really weird, I'm usually really into the olympics but but I don't really give a shit about this year either.
I won't be going out of my way to watch them. Mind you, with the summer and nice weather I watch all of about 3 hours of TV a week anyways.

not gonna lie, i'll be here for stories of theft and the buildings breaking down and leaking.

Verdasco 08-05-2016 08:16 AM

i dont give a shit about the olympics because they are selfish to host it in a country with the zika virus that can be remitted around the world.

Also, the caliber of athletes declined significantly since they do not want to get the zika virus. This is stupid, waste of summer olympics, waiting for 2016 / 2018...

What year do you think this is? :suspicious:

Err, you do realize that Rio was awarded the games in 2009 before anyone had even heard of the Zika virus right? And that it was only really made headlines a few months (not even a year) ago.

Caliber of athletes have declined? Stop pulling shit out of your ass. Other than a few high profile professional athletes who don't need Olympic exposure (The Olympics btw, have traditionally always been about Amateur athletes); the caliber of Athletes has, if anything, increased due to the amount poured in to countries' sport programmes ( who knows, maybe doping?) .

Everyone poo-poos on everyone else's Olympic games. Remember Sochi? Supposed to be the worst ever Olympics and was going to be hit by terrorists. Vancouver? Some idiot in the British press claimed it was going to be the worst ever before it even started. London 2012 - "oh it'll never live up to Beijing". blah blah blah.

Corruption, doping scandals I give you that, but that's the state of our world today. 20-30 years ago this shit was going on as well guaranteed (East Germany in the 80s, China in the 90s). We're just much more aware of it because of mass media/internet. In 1980, the Olympics in Moscow was boycotted by 65(!) countries. In 1984, it was paid back by the Soviet bloc who boycotted the LA Olympics. Palestinian terrorists actually killed the Israeli athletic contingent in Munich in 1976. So I think we've had a pretty good run so far.

SumAznGuy 08-05-2016 08:41 AM

Some funny stuff going back and forth on twitter with Ray Ferarro, James Duthie and Dejan Kovacevic.
DK said Vancouver was the scarriest Olympics he reported at, citing a 200+ people riot that smashed store windows, thugs urinating on an elderly couples's flag, and barbed wire around the Olympic torch.

6o4__boi 08-05-2016 08:50 AM

Lol I was following that this morning

That DK guy prolly mad cus he couldn't find anyone to suck him off while he was here for the Olympics.

GLOW 08-05-2016 08:55 AM

love some of the comments: in response to his comment on thugs urinating on an elderly couples' flag on the subway -->...wait...we have a subway??!! :lol

and lots of people commenting they must have sent him to vancouver, WA or still PJSalt over the Golden Goal :lawl:

SkinnyPupp 08-05-2016 08:57 AM

I'll watch it here and there. I'd like to be able to watch Canadian TV streams but they always block overseas Canadians from watching them, and nobody really streams olympics with good quality FeelsBadMan

unit 08-05-2016 09:24 AM

i have no enthusiasm for the olympics this time around.
i think it's going to have the lowest viewers in quite some time.
most people have cut their cable and can either watch on demand or just follow the highlights.

dat_steve 08-05-2016 09:53 AM

can't we all just come together once every few years as a species and appreciate the beauty of the games....specifically women's (or men's) beach volleyball?

fishCak3s 08-05-2016 10:02 AM

Will watch here and there, depending on what CBC is streaming on their website

Armind 08-05-2016 10:03 AM

When does women's volleyball competition begin?

I'm entirely aware of this. There was also the same kind of shit happening in Sochi with toilets being installed without dividers and such. It was hilarious.

In the end, did any of it matter to the enjoyment of the spectacle of the games? Or the impressiveness of the Athletes' performances? Not for me. But maybe if you're looking to make a smart-aleky political statement and pile on the flavour of the month, Brazil, then I suppose this is also the perfect opportunity for it.

In two months I guarantee all will be forgotten and we'll go back to bitching about Donald Trump until November. But yeah, if an entire country's Olympic team gets murdered during the games like in '72, then yeah, I'll have to apologize and agree that it was the worst games.

Verdasco 08-05-2016 01:30 PM

another reason why I could give two shits about this olympics! Why bother hosting it in a dangerous country

Are you actually going to qualify why this would affect your enjoyment of the televised games because of this? Or are you just going to post link after link of petty crimes and inconveniences?

That's like saying "I won't watch the Superbowl because Donald Trump". Or, "Fuck the World Series, Black lives Matter!!"

If anything the spectacle of this is enhanced by it taking place in a 3rd world country.

Sid Vicious 08-05-2016 02:18 PM

mens olympic weightlifting and 100m/200m is gonna be sick!

and lol at womens beach volleyball, why not just watch porn

Spoon 08-05-2016 02:29 PM

Only story line I'm mildly interested in is how Michael Phelps will fare. Other than that, it's whatever's on TV and seems interesting.
