I don't understand the rationale behind this trade for Jokinen.

Dim Jim has been telling fans, the media, and coach Green that the young players are gonna get more ice time this season.

Then he trades Vanek for 34 year old Jokinen. :fulloffuck:

JJ plays with the Sedins?? :fulloffuck:

How is Dim Jim gonna spin this trade to the fans and media?

highfive 02-26-2018 12:43 PM

Better not expense it to the team. Eugene would be pissed!

Devastator 02-26-2018 12:51 PM

Kane trade was basically a 2nd rounder.
If he signs with the Sharks next year it becomes a 1st rounder.

Vanek's past trade deadline performance history probably doesn't help his value. Vanek already came out saying he would come back to Vancouver next season if the sedin's also return.

With 2018 being a deep draft teams are not going to hand them out like candy.

With no picks available for Vanek they did the next best thing, get something instead of nothing. Vanek was a free agent signing that was well worth the 2 million.

bobbinka 02-26-2018 12:53 PM

comon folks.... jokinen was clearly a cap dump

dbaz 02-26-2018 12:54 PM

big meh to this tdl. not like they had much of value to move.
if the draft is a bust, theres going to be a lot of fire benning chants

Devastator 02-26-2018 01:01 PM

If you guys want to talk about stupid moves let's talk about Boston trading for Rick Nash.

Their GM definitely messed that up. Giving up alot of assets for a guy like Nash.

There are only a few wizards in the NHL GM group and Steve Yzerman is right up at the top.

highfive 02-26-2018 01:08 PM

Jets did pretty good in Stastny and Morrow depth guy.

So basically Vanek for Motte. Well it was either losing Vanek for nothing or getting Motte so at the end of the day we are still winners. Sure he may not play for the big club or if he does in a very limited 4th line role, probably an AHLer but a depth guy is a depth guy. Again, we got something vs nothing so you can't really say Dim Jim fucked up imo

I’d rather have pretty much any pick than a washup and a washup salary dump, we have enough of those “guys who can probably play” in too many numerous examples to even name.

At least a pick has a chance to become something, nothing we got back has any potential at all.

Listening to Benning’s presser, assuming he’s being honest there were no picks available at all... and they said they been following Motte since US Hockey days.. I don’t feel much better but... fuck...

Feels like the Canucks are always the eunuch in a room full of whores :okay:

Jmac 02-26-2018 02:44 PM

No picks available yet lots of other teams managed to get picks for worse players.

lol only dim Jim slurpers will believe that

Ch28 02-26-2018 06:02 PM

I do appreciate the fact that he was able to get something for nothing (Vanek UFA) but the whole excuse of 'no picks were available' is complete bullshit. So many picks were moved, it's just that YOU weren't able to negotiate any picks.

winson604 02-26-2018 06:33 PM

At the same time do we think we've gotten too obsessed with picks no matter how late that pick is. I know in this cap era how important picks are there is no disputing that but do we feel on some level some of us are too obsessed with that idea vs a body that can "potentially" help now or sooner?

dbaz 02-26-2018 06:34 PM

he could of been offered a 6th and jokinen instead of motte. at that point I would of taken motte instead and hope to showcase and flip em. i would then tell people i wasn't offered picks cuz that's shit

the thing is vanek got a bad name for the mtl playoffs even though he was .5ppg. he then followed it up with a bad playoffs with minny.. and had his value diminish again. in his trade to fla.. he couldn't help them get to the playoffs and that was for a 3rd and a contract dump albeit an ahl one.
basically hes had a history of being acquired and not providing enough in gms eyes thus losing a bunch of value, especially since he cant pk, doesn't have enough speed or sound defensively.

I'm more pissed about the holm trade.
at least he admitted there were lots of talks, and didn't want to just trade players like hutton for the sake of trading. makes me think there might be some moves coming up later

murd0c 02-26-2018 06:53 PM

the moves will come on draft day for sure

Sw0op 02-26-2018 08:27 PM

tough crowd..you do realize what he got last year for the same-ish performance at the same-ish point of the year...

would you rather him not do anything again ala dan hamhuis?!?!

68style 02-27-2018 11:45 AM

Just an amusing afterthought, and not sure if it's possible, but does anyone know how many goals we've had scored on us with the goalie pulled this year? I don't think we've scored a single goal all season with the extra attacker, but I feel like we've been scored on a ridiculous number of times.

Be kind of funny from a morbid curiosity perspective to see the numbers...

Our team has allowed 15 empty net goals this season. -twelve goals allowed when Markstrom is pulled from the net and three goals for Nilsson.

Hey, our team leads in one league statistic! :fuckthatshit:

I dunno why people seem to think Vanek is worth a 4th or 5th rounder when every GM had a chance to get him for free back in July, all they had to do was pay him 2mil. And even at that, nobody signed him until Sept. Now 6 months later, he's worth a 5th rounder?

pastarocket 02-27-2018 01:52 PM

The draft for next year will be held at Rogers Arena:

You could use this exact same sentence with pretty much any player who has ever been signed as a UFA that proceeded to perform beyond expectations and became valuable. It happens. He didn't get signed because people thought he was done, he proved otherwise. Unfortunately, his comments to the media AND his prior history of being traded at the deadline made him not very marketable.

Was listening to Halford and Brough and they were talking about this guy's GMJB impersonation and its great hahaha

Vancouver's fan base... Screwed if you do, screwed if you don't.
Getting Motte for Vanek was probably the best Benning could do. I don't see how the 180th+ pick in the draft would be any better/worse. Keeping Vanek would have meant nothing as he already stated he plans to re-sign with Vancouver next season. So we basically got a potential 23 year old Dorsett 2.0 for free?

The same people screaming "omggggggggg might as well keep Vanek" ... were the ones screaming "omg wtfffff why we keep Hamhuis!"
