Coquitlam RCMP warn about parking lot fraud | Vancouver Sun

If you hit someone in a parking lot with your car and that person asks for cash, call police.

That’s the warning Wednesday from Coquitlam Mounties, who say they have had at least three instances of parking lot fraud in Coquitlam since December.

Coquitlam RCMP Corp. Michael McLaughlin says the suspects are on foot and they will wait until a car is backing out of spot.

Then the person pretends to get hit by the car and convinces the driver to pay cash — usually $100 or $200– instead of calling ICBC and making a claim.

McLaughlin says investigators believe the suspects are targeting Canadians of Asian descent and that the scam could be happening in other jurisdictions around Metro Vancouver.

RCMP say using the ICBC collision settlement process for minor or routine claims can prevent fraud.

Last month, users on Reddit wrote about similar parking lot fraud incidents happening in Burnaby and Richmond.

Similar incidents were spotted early this year and multiple users posted on Vanpeople, Reddit and REVscence forums stories of a man claiming he was hit by their car and asking for money for damages.
