Sh*t ... will never complain about snow in YVR again, apparently, there are worst places for snowstorm.

Great68 02-18-2021 11:25 AM

People are actually believing that the cause of the power failures is due to wind & solar plants breaking down in the weather.

When in actuality it's due to natural gas pipelines feeding the power plants freezing up.

I just have no words. The people that believe the wind & solar story must have zero IQ.

Also their arrogance of keeping off the greater USA power grid (to avoid government interference) coming back to bite them in the ass. Serves them right.

mikemhg 02-18-2021 11:26 AM

Americans are so fucking stupid.

An energy producing state like Texas resorts to rolling blackouts as a result of a mild snow storm? This is what happens when you privatize your power grid and incentivize a bidding process between private entities to provide power on a daily basis in order to maximize profiteering.

More garbage and ridiculous conservative policies played out in reality.

When will these people learn?

This is well.

The utter and complete cynicism to cover corrupt conservative policy via blaming wind power (which accounts for roughly 7% of the Texas power grid) is fucking insane.

I thought with Trump gone we'd move a little more towards a semblance of rational politics, nope.

Republicans are going full on flat-earth mode.

I wonder how much elbastardo likes texas now.

I am impressed at the audacity and balls he has to travel to Cancun at this time, I ain't even mad.

That said, it is because I am not in Texas. I would be rightfully pissed if I was.

I'm curious what impact this will have on the people switching to individual solar systems & battery storage. It's basically the same thing on a smaller scale. The savings seem great, and going off-grid sounds cool, but operating independently means you fail independently too.

I dunno. If you generate your own household solar here, BC Hydro will allow you to sell unused power to them. You get the benefit of using grid power in an emergency.
There is literally no downside here to not remain connected to the grid.

Ted Cruz is a piece of shit, but the mother fucker flies economy now?

Great68 02-18-2021 01:56 PM

As much as I hate the guy, a state senator doesn't really have much power in actually running the operations of the state.

Although I agree this is terribly bad optics. I mean A) we're in a pandemic, what are you doing travelling to mexico? And B) part of leadership is showing that you're one with the people. If they're suffering, at least make it look like you're in the shit with them.

Shouldn't he be lobbying the federal government for money and using his connections to bring in supplies?

Cruz can leverage resources with the access he has as a federal elected official. He has spent a career making connections with the right people in the right places, but chooses not to use them at this point because

1) "Muh Fedrul oversight"
2) A weak Texas makes Californian imports think twice about moving in and changing the demographics of the state. This is seriously a visible issue in TX right now.
3) The private energy lobby is in the pockets of EVERYONE down here. Some people are having $400 power days as a result of this whole situation. And only because they're "lucky" enough to have power.

He obviously didn't expect to have such a major backlash but being the kind of visible reptile he is, Moscow Mitch probably demanded he come back because Cruz is up for election next year and this (along with the whole insurrection thing) has him on the serious bubble.

Conversely, Beto O'Rourke (Cruz' competition from the LAST senate race) has been organizing phone banks to call senior citizens to make sure they're alright. For those who need heat, they organize rides to "warming stations" (churches and community centers) and warm meals for those who haven't been able to cook.
And this is just one guy who DOESN'T have a formal staff. Hes not an elected official anymore. Beto is just some dude.

Laughably, Houston's version of Dodd (of Dodd's furniture) has been doing more than Cruz. He opened up his big furniture store for families to come and sleep and get warm.

While I get where you're coming from, Great68, I do think that Cruz could be doing something rather than less than nothing.

Great68 02-18-2021 02:28 PM

Yeah you're right. Fuck Ted Cruz.

Well in that case he was just representing the views and beliefs of his constituents.

Whereas in this case, he is taking a runny frozen shit all over his constituents.

I agree with this completely. Who cares if he's a senator versus a governor, it's all about optics, you don't head off to sunny warm Cancun in the middle of a crisis in which people are literally dying in your represented State.

The Republicans have become such an insane cult that even your governor had time to go on Fox News to spew partisan anti-socialist bullshit in the middle of his state going bonkers.

To call these people garbage is an insult to trash.

If Beto is smart, he'll have ads going all next election cycle with Cruz's fat face lining up at the airport to head to resort land while his people suffer.

GGnoRE 02-18-2021 04:14 PM

Let me start by saying that I would like to see Ted Cruz lose the next election. But if we are going to extend the shame to the entire party then what do you think about Democratic House Speak Pelosi violating rules to get a haircut during a lockdown in San Francisco? Or what about Democratic California Governor Newsom violating rules by attending a lobbyist's birthday party dinner at the French Laundry? If you ask me to rank whos mistake is worse, its obviously Ted Cruz's. But to me, this seems more like a career politician making a typical tone-deaf decision versus a Republican party being a Republican party thing.

They went down the street for a few hours this guy left the country with a large suitcase. Getting a haircut is a lot different then leaving the county during a crisis that just happened.

texas is the energy capital of America and they are having to truck in diesel from other states to run generators for hospital's. Just lest that sink in.

lol 'went down the street for a few hours'... umm more like breaking the rules that they are supposed to uphold as leaders? You don't have be an apologist for Pelosi and Newsom. They already admitted their mistakes and apologized, and I think people should accept it and move on. My point was that both Democrats and Republicans, and any career politician by and large, are capable of making tone-deaf decisions. If you want more examples, look up Chris Christie beach scandal, Austin Mayor vacation scandal, Obama Louisiana vacation scandal, albeit its of varying degree.

There is a difference between speeding and a hit and run.

This guy did not admit his mistake and apologize but lied about just going for one day to drop his kids off.

Manic! 02-18-2021 11:31 PM

AOC raises. Million dollars for Texas In less time that Ted Cruz spend in the air going back and forth to Cancun.

Ted Cruz is now blaming his kids saying it was there idea.

GGnoRE 02-19-2021 06:38 AM

^ I'm curious to know. What are you more enraged about? Ted Cruz's (Rep.) boneheaded decision to travel out of state during a crisis (dumb but not illegal) or NY Governor Cuomo (Dem.) purposely undercounting coronavirus-related deaths at nursing homes by declining to add to the total residents who had died in hospitals (reporting 8,500 deaths when its actually 15,000 deaths) which is an illegal cover-up and is now under investigation by FBI. I'm all for holdings politicians to a high-standard but you gotta bring the same type of energy to both sides and not cherry pick events that support your party of choice.

Not to say the Dems are right in what they did in your examples, but you are LITERALLY throwing whataboutisms in your argument whether you're aware of it or not.

Criticism for the wrongdoings of one group or party is not an automatic acceptance of the wrongdoings of the opposition group or party.

This thread is about Trump and the actions of his cronies, of course if he does dumb shit it's going to be mentioned. You said it yourself that Ted Cruz's actions are worse, this is why this is being brought up here and not the wrongdoings of Pelosi, Newsom, Cuomo, or any other democrat. Bringing it up here is merely distracting the discussion away from the topic at hand and classic gaslighting whether intentional (like Zedbra's antics) or not.

If Biden and his administration did dumb shit I'm sure it would be called out in that thread as well. Trudeau gets called out all the time in the Canadian politics thread, does that automatically make accept the actions of Trump supporters, or Republicans, or conservatives?

I've seen people get pissy in the Good Buys thread when mediocre deals or unique/rare cars because they aren't technically 'good buys'. Or when the Canucks thread used to be Canucks only and there would be a hubbub when Flames and Leafs fans would come in talking about their teams. This is the exact same thing you are doing.

Maybe I need to clarify. I never suggested we turn a blind eye when Reps make wrong decisions because Dems also make wrong decisions. That's a conclusion you derived because of trigger phrases like "what do you think about". My point was that we should not take Cruz's sole decision to travel to paint the entire party as unethical and I used Newsom's and Pelosi's mistakes as examples because it wouldn't make sense to use their mistakes to extrapolate to the entire Democratic party either. I have no idea what that last few lines you wrote is about.

Thanks for clarifying, I agree with this. There are factions of the republican party that are reasonable and legitimate, regardless if I personally agree with their policies or not. They should not be lumped in with the Trump group. Although I think it's mainly just easier to generalize in discussion vs specifying that difference.

The last lines were meant to provide my perspective as to why wrongdoings of democrats are not brought up in this thread regularly, or why there is resistance when they are. i.e. this is not limited to politics or the Trump thread but common in other topics/threads as well.
