I had no idea the site true north was owned by the chief operation officer of Shopify. true north had an interview with the founder of the proud boys a terrorist group. They took it down after they got called out. Quote:
e North, a right-wing Canadian media website launched by Shopify’s Chief Operating Officer, has taken down a recent interview in which the founder of the Proud Boys rails against immigrants and floats racist theories for why the group was legally designated as a terrorist entity in Canada.
The now-removed interview was posted last Friday and featured a conversation between Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and True North personality Harrison Faulkner wherein the pair took turns bashing immigrants, trading racist jokes and lamenting ethnic diversity in the City of Toronto.

Add this to the more bizarre happenings with the far right: a Sri Lankan Muslim who's funding Nigel and Reform UK, a VP pick in the US who has a Hindu wife, and Elon, who rants about having more white kids but had three kids with a woman who's half Punjabi. It makes you wonder who's really pulling the purse strings of the far-right movement.

So this is how fucking stupid we are in B.C./Canada..
The “paper bag” fee just came into effect this week, minimum .25 cents per bag period, minimum $2 per reusable bag. Businesses -must- charge for bags now whether you’re spending $2 at McDonald’s or $2000 at Safeway.
They have a guy on the radio right now who manufactures paper bags in Surrey he outlines that
A) paper bags take MUCH more energy and process to manufacturer, you cut down a tree, you deal with pulp and paper, you ship that to be turned into a bag.
B) the heavy hitters in terms of McDonald’s etc. have such a demand, that there is not even close to the manufacturing capability in North America to keep up with retailers who need paper bags, therefor they are coming from overseas
C) in a shipping container, you used to be able to hold 10 million plastic bags per container, with paper bags, you MIGHT be able to fit 250,000
So instead of plastic bags, we are now shipping and manufacturing paper bags abroad, sending them on boats and planes across oceans, and then charging for said bags, which ultimately end up in the landfill regardless.
Lol like.. this shit is getting -insane-

This is just one more of those things that is a veiled attempt to “change behaviour” but in reality, the main drivers who will be the largest consumers of these paper bags will never change.
You’re going to bring reusable bags to McDonald’s? Any fast food location?

“Climate change” is only localized to the area you pay taxes in.

This whole bag ban thing has seemed like a free gift to retailers from the government, allowing them to provide less service and take in more money.
Like before they would provide bags free, it was a cost of business. Now they get to charge for the bags and keep that money for themselves.
We've had the bag ban in Saanich & Victoria for a few years now and it's shit. Most places don't even pack your reusable bags for you anymore, they'll just shove your shit down the conveyor belt and you'll stand there awkwardly packing it yourself while they're ringing the next customer through and start shoving their shit down the conveyor.
And half of the "reusable" bags are junk too. I've had to throw out so many after just one or two uses because they ripped or the straps broke. You need to reuse your bag 50 times to offset one single-use bag.

I got a Toyota bag at the auto show like 10 years ago, still going strong.
Lesson learned, Toyota even makes reliable bags.

Plastic bags have been banned in Nanaimo since like 2021. It's not a big deal, customers adjusted. They either bring there own bag, skip using a bag or just buy one. Paper bags also hold more than plastic bags.

Even more insanity from local politics arising today..
Vancouver putting forward a motion to install anti suicide netting on the Granville bridge at the cost of 10-20 million dollars..
Meanwhile, the next story run is that private funding was required to keep the DTES public toilets open..
Fucking Priorities man.. it’s hard to believe how obtuse we are at all levels of govt.

A guy called in after saying he worked in pulp and paper making egg cartons and they had an active program to return and recycle them with great success. This was of course, with private industry however and not incompetent govt.
