Interesting, Danielle Smith's party in AB, United Conservatives (UCP) is having their annual convention. And many are not liking the Memorandum of Agreement between her and Carney on the pipeline, you would have thought that they'd be happy or satisfied but there is just a basic mistrust between AB and Ottawa.
So BC doesn't like it, part of the UCP fanbase doesn't like it ...
This guy suggested a pipleline from AB to Hudson Bay, then you open up the European market, go through Saskatchewan and Manitoba (who should be favourable to this) https://pipelineonline.ca/brian-zinc...Id=0&videoId=0
Or this https://www.canadianenergycentre.ca/...m-hudsons-bay/

The people that are angry about it that are UCP supporters have no reason to be mad other than “HNNNGGGG lIbRUL BAd” mentality. The extreme opinions by those that are so incredibly uneducated on politics due to social media rage bait brain rot content is something that we, as a society need to fucking figure out fast.
People need to get back to making their hobbies or their jobs their identities when they don’t really have one instead of politics.

^This 100%, it's not said enough, social media and its brain rot, combined with all this AI slop/fake news is the bane of our democracies.
We saw the warning signs in places like India and the Philippines (in fact Philippines was the testing ground for all this crap in the 2010s), and now here we are, the same problems.

While I agree with Westopher's comment that much of those within the UCP being upset at the MOU are probably the type that will disagree with anything the federal Liberals present to them, I would also say that given the poison pills that were embedded into the MOU, IMO a UCP supporter should really be at least disappointed with how the MOU came out. In fact, IMO Danielle Smith agreed to a "bad deal".
At the moment, the biggest hurdle is the coastal FN's steadfast refusal with agreeing to the project. I am not at all knowledgable when it comes to FN matters, but just following basic logic, if the pipes pass through their terrorities and they don't give the OK, then it becomes very difficult for the project to actually proceed, right? I can also see how Ottawa "might" overrule the FN protests and keep building, but that creates bad blood, and I'd hardly think Carney wants to go down that road unless he has some very big reasons to do so.
Also, wouldn't a loyal UCP supporter be pretty pissed about seeing the increased industrial carbon tax? And if they are pro-fossil fuel, I wonder how they'd view the amount of money that'll be spent on the carbon capture project as well.

yeah nobody's going to go up to Hudson Bay. That route is not feasible until more vessels use the Northwest Passage.... which might actually happen given the shrinking ice in the Arctic.

Not to mention Hudson bay itself and the Hudson straight freeze during winter, which is why everything is moved through the St Lawrence River.

Half of the UCP members want Alberta to separate, so it's understandable why Smith got booed at the convention. No deal with Ottawa will ever be good enough with her base, unless it's full separation.
The memory of Exxon Valdez is a long one. It's true - an oil tanker spill/rupture would be disastrous for the North Coast. But, modern tankers are double-hulled and there would be pilotage through the waters. You don't really hear too much about major oil tanker accidents these days. The demand for oil is still strongest in Asia because India and China and other countries in southeast Asia are still using oil. It makes very little sense to build a new oil pipeline to Hudson Bay because Europeans are weaning themselves off of oil pretty quickly.

It makes very little sense to build a new pipline period, right now. We already have one that the gov't was forced to bailout. A new pipeline is nothing more than a vanity project for Danielle Smith.
If global energy demand peaks in 10 years (which is what many are predicting), why are we building a pipeline that will take 15 years to complete?
TMX isn't being used used at full capacity, yet it can be upgraded to handle more, and they are planning to dredge Burrard Inlet to allow the ships to load more than they can right now.
(Also, nobody mentions that the required higher carbon pricing will make that oil way more expensive than our current rates, thus making it less competitive globally).

By the time a new pipeline is completed, China will have built like 100 new nuclear reactors and everything will be electric. Why would they still want our oil?

This is a bit of a monumental achievement - basically the country that could do the most harm to the climate has turned the corner.
tl;dr China isn't going to need any extra oil from us so that pipeline is a pipe dream.
In related reading Bill Gates wrote a detailed article on the state of climate change - in it he says we're turning the corner on climate change as well - going green mostly doesn't cost extra anymore so new energy will be green. He got a lot of shit for it but I don't see anything in his writeup that was entirely off base, I think he's mostly right - it's just that we still need to see things through b/c the past is still affecting the future. https://www.gatesnotes.com/home/home...-about-climate

I believe that people won't do anything about a problem until it becomes a big problem. China had a big problem with pollution. It was gray skies everywhere so they did something about it.
Same thing with California in the 60's... smog in LA was becoming a big problem so they came out with CARB and emmissions control.
Further inland where the hillbillies live, they wake up in the morning and see blue skies... they're gonna keep driving their V8 diesel trucks. For them pullution hasn't become big enough of an issue or they don't see it as an issue at all.
....said the guy with a 5.0L sedan... lol

Was just in Beijing last month...first couple days sky was blue everything was great. 3rd day it was smoggy AF and then the drive to the new airport I could barely see 20ft in front of me. But yeah the electic car adoption rate there is phenomenal. It was so quiet I couldn't believe i was back in Chin-ar again. Central BJ is quieter than DT Vancouver! |

Yeah they’ve really turned that place around. Hail emperor Xi.
Now if only he can fix the whole evil empire thing, and stop Chinese tourists from being a bunch of retards, then we’d have a Nobel peace prize winner on our hands.
Excuse me while I push fuckers out of the way to take photos and pee on the Mona Lisa

Edit I just googled. Got the name right but it’s not a deep water port. I wonder where that came from in my brain, I swear that’s what I was told. Im the old senile guy, or can predict the future. Ha!
“ Port Nelson: A project to build a deepwater port here was abandoned due to the river's shallow water, requiring costly and continuous dredging for large ships. The project was stopped during World War I, and the site was eventually abandoned. ”
