Far-right commentators on X are losing their shit over Carney and China, calling on Trump to invade Canada lol. Trump, on the other hand, said it’s good he made a deal but he’d be stupid not to make a deal with China. Then you’ve got Ford going ape shit, but someone needs to tell him no one wants crappy domestic EVs and maybe it's a better play to lure Chinese EV manufacturers to Ontario.

What’ll be interesting is if BRICS keeps expanding, because China’s long term goal is clear: get as many countries on board as possible and slowly reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Dont get why ontario is all patriotic about “Canadian Automakers.” Last I recall, aside from magna and linamar which are tier 1 parts suppliers, Ford/GM/Chrysler are American. And they already shut down factories on their own and not because of chinese cars. In the eighties when japanese cars were dominating, you guys should read about the racism towards asians.

Gotta blame someone for job losses

It's been a few years since I checked, but isn't Toyota the most Canadian car manufacturer as far as the actual amount of production done in Canada?

It was stupid that we escalated trade tensions with China largely because the US didn’t like Huawei in the first place. Bottom line is trade deals with China and India will benefit Canada. The more trade partners, the better.

They said the same thing with this move, no less than 3 articles just on CBC’s site quoting Doug Ford being incensed about it and the NDP critic wailing away… but reading the details it doesn’t even amount to a dent in the existing industry so the crying went away fast.

Not even close to equivalent to the USA tariffs on cars and car parts made here.

In a world where the US was still our staunchest and most reliable partner in just about everything (despite our occasional quarrels), it made every sense to arrest Meng Wanzhou and piss China off. We had a legal obligation to do so, and the consequences to let it slip would not have been good. The 100% Chinese EV tariffs followed along the same lines -- we are part of the integrated N.American auto manufacturing sector. Allowing the flood of state-subsidized cheap EVs into our country would have created a major problem for our workers in the sector.

With Trump's destruction derby, we no longer have a reliable partner in much of anything from the US. In particular when it comes to the auto manufacturing sector, Trump has been repeatedly acting like he is out to destroy the long-standing integrated sector anyway. If he is gonna do that in the first place, what benefit do we have in trying to protect our workers in the sector? I can't really blame any of the brands for shuttering their factories here, since they wouldn't be able to turn a profit on cars that are made here! Without being able to export the cars that are built here to the US, the sector is gonna die anyway, so we might as well strike a deal with China to bring in some cheap EVs that can make cars more affordable for our citizens.

With India, I also don't blame Turd for souring relations with India / Modi. The Indian state were fxxking behind the ordering of the killing for a Canadian citizen on our soil! How can any PM turn a blind eye towards that?!

Personally, I am not too optimistic with us improving trade relations with India, since my understanding of India is -- their economy has a very protectionist mentality. It doesn't mean I am opposed to doing more trade and investments with India -- I am just skeptical that they would be able to set aside that protectionist mindset.

I think was a good deal. I really like that there were benefits to other provinces, BC as one of them with the wood construction and forestry technology deals.

As far as the auto industry goes, it's not an industry we ever could control for ourselves, and the US has decided that we cannot have one anymore.
Canola, Wood, etc are all under our own control.

I agree that the NA auto model is effectively broken if the US is no longer a reliable export market abd Canada simply doesn’t have enough domestic demand to build cars solely for our own market, so trying to preserve the status quo just delays the inevitable. Waiting things out doesn’t help auto workers if the industry is going to shrink regardless. Being proactive and making deals that actually create jobs and keep vehicles affordable makes more sense.

And no doubt Chinese EVs will clearly disrupt the sector, as we’re seeing in Germany, but competition can be healthy. If Chinese manufacturers are willing to build plants in Canada that could realistically create more long term jobs than the legacy automakers that are already scaling back.

Also, the UAW supports American jobs and left Canadian auto workers out in the cold. There's zero leverage left.

No one in central Canada has cared about softwood lumber over the years, so I'm not sure if I'm going to shed a tear for the unionized auto sector that produces cars that nobody buys, except for fleet operators.

Honda and Toyota will be fine for a while because their brand perception for reliability has a long run way.

But the writing is on the wall for traditional auto manufacturing.

This speech from Carney is intelligent, thoughtful, honest, direct and incredible. In many ways hard to hear, but I can’t fault him for being direct about what is happening.
