They just need to get a certain threshold, like 30 to 40%, that is within the realm of questionability and hope that Trump declares the vote to be fraudulent and an excuse to recognize an independent Alberta.
What I mean is there is no legal means (that I can think of) where they could successfully withdraw from Canada. First nations is already a hurdle they cannot overcome. The small group of people they have supporting this also have zero rights to the land itself.
I think what he's suggesting is that there's some concern that the USA will intervene and possibly send military into Alberta on behalf of the "rigged election" here.
