Of course, those other councillors are infuriated and call the accusations completely false.
So councillor zhou ends up apologizing for putting out misinformation, and the mayor thanks zhou for taking accountability for sharing information that wasn't accurate.
Then today, the story breaks that it was actually the mayor who originally called the other councillors drug dealers back in December LOL | If you didn't watch the video in the story you need to - it makes Sim look WAY WORSE than the written story. Ken Sim is a total scumbag - he lets his own guy hang, is the source of the original accusation, pretends he had nothing to do with it, and slanders/defames a fellow councillor.
I'd expect a lawsuit out of this one (for defamation).

The reaction was "Really?? that doesn't sound like something Zhou would say. He's smarter than that, I thought..."
Now it makes perfect sense, he was just echoing what his boss had said. And then his boss let him take the fall in front of the media for it. Brutal.
Once I told that person it was Sim behind it all along, they were like "Ohhhh ok that makes me feel better. I didn't think Zhou was that stupid to say something like that haha"

Even though Zhou may not have been that type of person in the past, you gotta remember that power corrupts. The current City Council has been in place for 3 years already, and that can change someone.
If I were Zhou myself, I'd be totally pissed to see myself getting thrown under the bus like that by my boss.

i'm not sure what's the worst part of all this:
A) he didn't bother to fact check like crazy whether it was true or not before making the accusation public the first time
B) he didn't say anything when zhou, who said the exact same thing, had to apologize for it. instead he praised zhou for taking accountability for it.
C) he made the accusation only to the chinese speaking media, but never said a word to the english speaking media  | |

That said, out of the current crop of people who have announced their interest to run for mayor, I don't think I can trust any of them.

I'm curious for the people here: How do you feel as Chinese residents that this false messaging was clearly targeted to only that ethnic group, rather than to all city residents?

WeChat is primarily used by Mainland Chinese people, and the language Zhou used in the video was also Mandarin.
I can't imagine Zhou had done any actual fact-checking into what he said about other counsellors, cuz if he had, it should be fairly easy to find that the accusation is pretty baseless -- Orr wasn't even in Vancouver at the time when Sim said he was handing out drugs on the streets of Vancouver. He simply believed what Sim told him / have said.
I would also extrapolate from that, and tend to believe many of the people Zhou reached via that video in WeChat would also believe Zhou without doing any fact-checking themselves as well. Otherwise, someone would probably have called Zhou out within the chat group.
It all goes back to the importance of using reliable sources of information. Unfortunately, many people will just believe whatever they've been told, esp when it is coming from "authority figures".

Sim knew what he was doing. He was directly appealing to the conservative Asians that view expanded social services as "wasting money on lazy people," and medical Drug rehab/treatment or decriminalization as, "giving free drugs to addicts."
People like my dad, who's idea of detox/rehab is to drop addicts off in the Rockies and see if they survive and make it back to civilization.

Immigrants in general sway right and any mention of drug addicts and social housing it's panic mode.

That paved the way for what Carney and Modi signed today: five memorandums of understanding expanding Canada-India partnership across energy and critical minerals, technology and AI, talent, culture and defence worth $5.5 billion in total.
Perhaps the most significant is a $2.6 billion deal between the Government of India and Saskatoon-based Cameco to supply nearly 22 million pounds of uranium for nuclear energy generation from 2027 to 2035. That's a big boon for Saskatchewan, which sits on one of the world's largest reserves of high-grade uranium.

I’m impressed with Carney. He patched up our relationship with China and India and signed trade agreements with both.
I suspect we might be heading towards an election some time this year so he can lock up a majority government.

I am not opposed to signing a trade deal with India, but given the past accusations of the Modi gov being involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, I don't think we should trust the Modi gov all that much.
Recall that accusations came from CSIS and RCMP to begin with -- it didn't originate from just the federal gov or the Liberals party. Similar accusations for attempted murder of another Khalistan movement figure in the US was also a thing, so it isn't a one off incident.
To suddenly suggest that the Indian gov is no longer a threat to foreign interference in Canada is really difficult to believe. I would not be surprised that they have scaled back on their activities for a multitude of reasons. But I wouldn't for a minute believe that they no longer harbour any thoughts of sabotaging Canada in some way.
