Rarely driven, temp plates... But glad after 10+ years and the dirty yellowing paint you still turn heads and get spotted!

I took advantage of the weak pound and picked up an Exige in the UK. Last week I finally got to go over and drive it.

First stop was Donington. Two days later we went to Cadwell Park.

Needs another year before I can bring it across, so I'm getting the suspension refreshed at Hanger 111 and storing it there. With the current exchange, labour is cheaper there than here. The plan is to do another quick trip next summer for a few track days before shipping it over.

Nice! Saw a RHD Lotus Elise at a local cars and coffee recently. My wife is headed to the UK next month and is bringing me back a BMW 1M.

Sadly it's only 1:18 scale.

pistonheads.com is a great site for buying cars like that in the UK.

There's also a ton of fast or race Caterham's for a good price that are over 15 years old. (The wife nixed that idea)

I actually found CSLs on pistonhead, cheapest is 43K GBP. The conversion isn't as good as I expected hahaha. It'll probably end up around the same cost as a brand new M2 Comp. Thanks for sharing!

Just use autotrader.co.uk in combination with a random UK postal code to search for stuff

Transition cars as I like to call them (where they're older but the fanatics haven't caught on to them yet) such as the MR2 Spyder... here you can't find a decent MR2 Spyder for less than $15k imported from the USA anymoe due to exchange and taxes and somewhat increasing demand............ but in England? You can pretty much have your choice of practically new low mileage ones for about $8k cdn....

A lot of used cars are so dirt cheap in the UK. Only a few cars (NSX comes to mind) carry a massive premium over what's available here...

Watching the Top Gear cheap car challenges I was always amazed at how cheaply they could get rather good looking cars and how everything seems to depreciate like crazy. An MOT seems pretty lax compared to a Shaken or the German testing so why do they drop so fast?

RHD cars are less desirable in the worldwide market so you don’t have all of Europe trying to buy them up. UK climate seems to make cars rustbuckets. Their economy is probably even worse than ours. It’s a good recipe for a bargain, but what good is a bargain when it’s not a useful product (for us).

I think it's a combination of a few things. You can import cars from Japan for cheap (no 15 year rule), limited parking for spare fun cars, no VAT on private sales, and people seem to really like having a new car.

Edit: As Westopher says, RHD is also just generally less desired but I disagree on the climate remark. It's basically the same as here in terms of rust. Maybe it's just that more people park outside.

The climates similar but have a look at how many cars from the uk have rotted to shit or had panels welded. I honestly don’t know what the difference is, but I’ve never seen south coastal B.C. cars rot like UK cars do.

Westopher is right, UK cars rust like crazy... I think it’s more like Prince Rupert type weather there and I used to dread lease returns at my old work from PR because they’d be dripping rust stains from door handles and stuff after only 3 years there! Always wet all the time it’s much more dry in the lower mainland.

JDM imports don't seem to have rust problems even though it's a similar island. I had a YJ that lived on Vancouver Island for a few years though and the amount of corrosion that was in the electrical was crazy. It doesn't really snow in the UK so I can't imagine they salt a lot. I would guess it's all the rain but it rains a lot in the lower mainland too so idk (edit: a quick Google says roughly the same number of days and volume of rain in the UK as Vancouver).

In the TG Nile special Hammonds Subaru looks clean on the exterior but the failed control arm had rusted from the inside out (granted it had high mileage). In a few of the specials the cars have clean looking bodies but when lifted up they're pretty rotten. RHD doesn't bother me at all and a Toyota-engined Exige (or even an Elise) is one of my more realistically priced dream cars but I'd be mildly terrified to get it here and it's got a bunch of internal rusting going on.

Interesting. I'm not sure why, but I was under the impression that island cars (Victoria/Nanaimo at least) are less prone to rust than even the mainland? Perhaps they get a little less rain than we do? I don't think they're getting loads more salt exposure in the air/rain than we do in the Lower Mainland.

It was a 1992 and I didn't know any history of it prior to ~2006 so I don't know where else it lived or what else it was subjected to that may have simply caught up with it while it was on the island. It had a soft top + half doors as well, and Chrysler wiring isn't exactly robust to begin with so definitely take that with a grain of salt lol.
