China backing down from Adam Silver and the NBA was absolutely shocking to me, so I am not surprised to see that they are flip-flopping again after suffering massive amounts of "face loss", this time promising "retribution" and "punishment" against the NBA commissioner.

If it's any consolation, I have decided to sever ties with my Chinese factories, instead bringing my manufacturing back to Taiwan. Oddly enough, even though the labor costs are about 20% higher, my customers didn't care and appreciate that I'm getting out of China.

These are huge corporations too. That surprised me, although these places are run by humans...

It seems extreme, but it's looking like the HKPF really needs to be disbanded and started over from scratch. They are completely out of control, they have no idea what they're doing out there. It's basically a bunch of goons running around with weapons.

I am blown away at how far they have fallen. It's really sad.

It's not even that. I think the simplest, smallest steps to regain public confidence is to just take some police brutality that is obviously out of line that is caught on camera and widely circulated and have the police force go "We understand that there may have been misconduct, we will investigate and give out the appropriate punishment." Maybe some paid leave like the US does. THAT at the very least will start to quell some of the anger, without "mistreating the hand of the law" which is the police line.

But the stance of the govt/police is to deny ANY wrongdoing, irregardless of what everyone can see with their own eyes. There's a saying in Chinese, "真眼說瞎話" (lies spouted from truth you can see), and that's basically what the police conferences are every week.

This is why I grow tired of the Pro-CCP stance of "Unity". We must be united, or else there will be 民碎 (fragmentation). Unity at what costs? Unity at the cost of lies and intimidation? Dehumanization of opposing views? The equation seems to be $$$$ > ALL = Unity.

HK is not in a state of emergency -> puts in emergency law

Have Police roam around basically picking fights with civilians but it's not a police state.

I don't think think they will ever even entertain the idea of disbanding the police force, but common, at least take responsibility for some of the shithead actions that happen. The consequences of that is a totally devaluing of moral standards across the board.

To be honest though, I'm not even that surprised at the continued escalation by the police and govt. You just need to look at it in the context of their strategy. It seems that Beijing has already given up on trying to reclaim the hearts of the HK people. They seem bent on tearing HK down and then rebuilding it from scratch. In order to do that, they need to have a reason to send the PLA in.

So it's becoming increasingly obvious that they will fan the flames as much as possible, putting out stupid laws and having the police patrol the streets and fire teargas endlessly on civilians to anger the peaceful protestors and radicalize the moderates. The first step is to introduce the idea that the protestors are willing to resort to using bombs in order to achieve their goals - we saw that over the weekend with a "suspected bomb" in the middle of the streets with bomb squad needing to come and disarm it.

As soon as you involve bombs, you can label the protestors as terrorists instead of just rioters. Then they can shut down the city and send the PLA, start building "re-education facilities".

It makes me depressed, because you can foresee all these things while watching, but helpless to do anything about it

Beijing draws up plan to replace Carrie Lam as Hong Kong chief. Chief executive would resign by March under proposal that needs Xi’s sign off

Said from the beginning that this is a pointless endeavor. She is literally useless, nothing more than a puppet of Beijing. Still, this would take care of another demand, and if Beijing sees this as a way to gain some face, I say let them. 3 more demands to go.

Maybe her replacement will be willing to do what's needed, without being so stubborn and worrying so much about "losing face"

He's not really what led to the protests. He was just used as an excuse which ended up being the straw that broke the camel's back

It's not that hard to explain their reasoning either. For any business in int'l trade, they want stability as it's the only way to make feasible projections and hence planning.

They'd rather have a known 20% increase in cost that's going to be the norm, rather than 15% duty today and 30% in a few weeks. The constant change means a chaos in pricing, logistic... etc. Contracts are signed with often months in advance, and no one would knowingly want to sign something that they might lose money on.

I read about this too, family and I are debating if it's legit or not. Couldn't fact check cause.. no one fucking knows what China is thinking ahhaha.
The two candidates were Tong Tong or Mr lam. Both have previous political experience. Not sure how this will play out. If social pressures were able to remove Carrie, China would have done so or at least least Carrie resign.

If it does happen, I hope HK will rest on these protest. At lesat for the short term.

They don't have to, he's going to go there on his own will and turn himself in.

Extradition was never needed, it was just an excuse to force it into the law to capture Mainland Chinese criminals and "criminals"

That's not going to happen without HK police officers accompanying him to Taiwan. First of all, under what visa is he going to travel to Taiwan by himself? As a tourist? And also, who's going to want to take a domestic flight with a self-admitted murderer without police escort? Can you imagine if you were sitting beside this guy on the airplane or waiting at the airport gate? But the HK government is refusing to escort him to Taiwan, or allow Taiwanese police to come to Hong Kong to escort him back.

Game of politics of who has sovereignty over where and over what. Stupid game, no doubt, but exactly what this whole protest movement has been about, so right now the details matter.

I find it incredulous though, that HK government just allows this guy to roam around and go back home even though he already admitted to the killing. And no doubt he was told what to say to the media (I want to travel to Taiwan to turn myself in) in order to try to establish that TW is not "sovereign" therefore there are no problems traveling between the two places without the need for special escort.

They can work something out. It might not be until after Lam is gone. If HK is unwilling to let Taiwanese officers come pick him up, they can have HK officers accompany him straight to the door of his plane, and have Taiwanese officers pick him up the moment it lands in Taiwan. He doesn't need a visa, just arrest him right at the border.

It's a bit complicated, especially when you have to deal with Beijing and their thin skin, but it can be accomplished. If Carrie Lam and Beijing want to "save face" (and we know this is their #1 priority) and convince people that the whole intention of the bill was to bring him to justice, they will try to get him to Taiwan somehow.

This is actually pretty funny. HK Protesters trashed the Xiaomi store. Some dude comes to loot some phones. Protesters tied him up to a railing and left him for the cops to arrest

They are very sincere with their anti-looting rule. I just wish they'd stop using fire.
