I feel if Demko carries the team even further this post season that'll put the ball in JB court for sure. Marky will have to sign for much less if he wants to stay in Van or he has to walk and explore FA. I do feel bad for him though with salaries on the rise but then Covid hits and the cap stays the same which means he'll be signing for much less than he's really worth. His only upside to signing less is he gets to be a part of an ultimate goalie tandem which would give him a better chance of career success. Needless to say Demko has arrived.

There are a tonne or goalies on the market this off season though, it gives him even less leverage. The days of the huge long term deal for goalies are over because it’s almost never worth it to put that much of your cap into goaltending

I'm sure Marky's agent isn't pleased right now, but with all due respect I'm not convinced that Demko proves himself as a legit #1 just because of two amazing games. I'm also not convinced that Domingue or DiPietro are nearly as strong a back up in the event Demko does get the #1 job and Marky walks, and I'd rather continue to see Marky/Demko as the duo for another couple of seasons.

One of the things the Canucks did really well 10 years ago when they were contenders was convincing a core to sign for less so they could add depth to the team. Probably wishful thinking but I'm hoping Marky settles for a home town discount to ride this young team's rise in the West.

Be good to have a way to sign both at reasonable terms and contracts. Yes, take a little less for the chance at making a run. Best case scenario, both are playing lights out, you can trade one for a key piece down the stretch if terms are good ... let's hope Canucks learn from goalie contracts that 'sucks'!

You cant keep both because of Seattle.

The only way I see them keeping both is if Marky somehow signs a 1 year contract and then re-negotiates a new one next season. There's no way Seattle would take a pending UFA goaltender.

Are No trade/No move clause still applicable?
Wonder if Marky is asking for that.

There are some ways around keeping both. They’ve talked about it on the radio a bit

Basically making side deals among the Gm’s to protect certain players while exposing others they target etc.

So like what they did with Vegas to protect certain players and giving up draft picks to VEgas.

Signing short term is very risky on Markstrom's part. He's 30 years old, his stock is at its highest it's ever been, and he's got to think about life 10 years from now.

Keeping both isn't a long-term solution for the Canucks either. Hughes and Pettersson both have their ELCs expire at the end of next season and they're going to get big money, obviously. The Canucks have a very tight cap situation as it is and there's just no way you can afford to do another Luongo-Schneider situation where 15+% of the team's cap is tied up in goaltending.

The Canucks are going to have to make a goaltending decision before the expansion draft whether they want to or not. Personally, I'd sign Markstrom without an NMC and then you trade one or the other before the deadline next season. Gives you another half a season to make a decision.

I remember hearing it. Marky wants term but it was suggested to give him money over term then protect Demko. Seattle would be hard pressed to take a high salary 30 something yr old goalie. If Seattle takes another #1 goalie instead that leaves the Canucks with a short term on Markstrom

winson604 09-04-2020 01:08 PM

Arm chair GM or not I don't know what call to make on this one yikes.

bobbinka 09-04-2020 01:44 PM

Demko will get you the best return. He's young, has a 1mil cap hit next yr, and will still be an RFA after that.

Goalies have very little worth on the trade market, especially during an offseason that's loaded with goaltenders.

Jake Allen has been a fairly good goalie over the years and all he got was a 3rd & 7th round pick.

murd0c 09-04-2020 01:59 PM

with the cap issues I honestly think the best bet would be to go with Demko, If its true Marky wants 8x8 then good for him but the Canucks can sign him for that.

Expresso 09-04-2020 02:11 PM

As great as Demko has been, let's face it shooters just don't have a book on him yet. So what will he look like a couple of years down the road? We've seen similar situations with Binnington, and Murray. In any case, I wouldn't want to be the one to make that decision.

Stars tie it up on a bullshit penalty, Avs go ahead with 2 minutes left thinking they've won it, then Stars tie it again 10 seconds later :fulloffuck: crazy game!

spoon.ek9 09-04-2020 03:13 PM

feel bad for MacKinnon and the Avs. Happy for Bones though! He finally looked happy :lol

Obsideon 09-04-2020 03:18 PM

Would have been a pretty cool narrative if we ended up facing the Avs.
Backup vs Backup tenders.
Calder finalists battle it out head to head.

Yea I had to bounce right as the game ended but they almost scored when the goalie was down there as well in the dieing seconds, unfortunately shot it right into his glove but didn’t end up making a difference I suppose

spoon.ek9 09-04-2020 03:28 PM

3rd string goalie and captain unavailable. The Avs really had a lot of things working against them but still found a way to take it to game 7 OT. Disappointing of course but if I were an Avs fan there's hardly much more I could have asked of from their team.

I was imagining a matchup between Hughes and Makar too lol. It'll most likely happen in the next few years. Who knows, maybe as early as next year we'll see it.

6thGear. 09-04-2020 03:37 PM

If the Canucks win tonight it'll be a battle of bitter owners as well lol

I think the Canucks will show up tonight. This group knows they most likely won't be together next year as JB will have to clear out salary and it seems like they are quite the tight knit group

bobbinka 09-04-2020 05:06 PM

lets fucking goooooo
