TSN Original: The Problem of Pain

Playing through injury, sacrificing your body, blocking a shot, fighting to stand up for a teammate. Hockey players are praised for their courage and willingness to withstand pain, and doing whatever it takes to win no matter the cost. Here is the TSN Original: The Problem of Pain.

As someone living with Crohn’s Disease for the past 21 years, I can relate. I still played university level sports and that was tough enough; playing pro hockey with Crohn’s/Colitis is unbelievable. There are days when even golfing or bowling is tough to handle and you end up with a week’s worth of constant pain and fatigue.

I go to the gym where Kes was rehabbing a couple years ago, I give the guy credit he was working there day in day out just to get back on skates. And every time I saw him it was like the most minimal, specialized hip and leg exercises. Guy is a warrior regardless of what you think of him as a person

Tbh, medication problems aside, I’d probably work harder at the gym too if it meant getting a $30 million+ contract extension and I had zero other work commitments

That's the only Kesler I always thought of during the days when some Canucks fan were getting their hate on. The guy gave it his all for us and it was obvious and yea the divorce wasn't clean and the fact that he comes off and potentially is actually a dick doesn't help but as a fan all I can ask for and expect is just try your hardest for us and whatever happens happens and he did that and I never thought of him differently. It was nice to see him get cheered at the Sedins retirement you can tell it really meant a lot to him.

During those latter years though he could have gone on LTIR and still got paid regardless

True... though once you’ve had a taste of that you don’t want to give it up at all.

Way harder to find excuses to fly around to all his side chicks when he’s not an active player anymore lolol... never mind the puck bunnies don’t want to bang the hasbeen

But if he went on LTIR during those years with us, he may not have gotten the $41mil contract with Anaheim... which he's on LTIR for right now

Money is one thing, but even at that level he definitely seemed like an outlier in his dedication.

One only need to look to JV, younger still in their prime and so much potential to be successful and rake in the millions. Just doesn't seem to care.

The work ethic of a lot of players is pretty questionable... guys should all be ripped in the NHL and many are... but for example you see a camera pan over of the VGK dressing room when the Canucks were playing them and half those guys had bellies and small upper bodies etc I was kind of shocked.... but they still handed our asses to us!

Don’t think work ethic equals to rip bodies.

I think it’s tough for jv to play in Vancouver and succeed. Hate to say it but that guy naming them the worst crew ever. Maybe there’s soemthing to it?

Too many distractions in yvr.

Have the same thoughts on JV. He's too comfortable in Vancouver and still hangs with his old friends all the time. He needs a fresh start some where else and once he does I feel he's going to reach that potential he never would here.

LOVED Kesler the player but wasn't a fan of Kesler the person.

You can tell that a lot of people finally came around and realized he gave his all for this team as shown during the Sedin retirement ceremony.

It looks like hockey players train their bodies very differently from other sports, it's more lower body and core?
Look no further than Ovechkin, he's got a dad bod but he's a beast on the ice.

Having spoken to patients with Crohn's disease, just by looking at their medications as well as the frequency of their visits to emergency, you can tell it is very unpleasant and disruptive to living any sort of normal life. They touched on it in the video and it's true, that is a gigantic conflict of interest for teams to be partnered with private hospitals. If I had no healthcare background such as these players don't, it'd be very easy to mislead, purposely misdiagnose and flat out not tell players about side effects and long term effects.

I stop judging people's body on how healthy they are... Understand hockey players are really crazy with their full body endurance, then I also see these men who are like sticks and they can cycle for 8 hours burning 6000 calories... OMGWTF

Been watching them since they joined the NHL. I'm not going to live past 108, so not in my lifetime.
