Not to sound like a smart ass, but how does one quantify the N54 as a good engine when it's plagued with problems? |
^ The sane way a biased mother says her son really is a good boy after he goes to jail for the 5th time |
Everytime we have any BMW discussion it usually goes something along the lines of: I have a love-hate relationship with BMWs. Then some further discussion about all the maintenance that we've done. As much of a meme it is, it really is reality. But we all come to terms that we love our BMWs despite being plagued with issues. |
Just found out a friend of mine owns a Z3m Coupe with the S54 engine in it, but hasn't driven it in so long all the tires are flat. WutFace |
^ Could be a cool project for someone For some reason the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) issue is rare on the 1M N54. I guess there was enough lawsuits that BMW found a solution. There is an N54 335i on BAT right now that was bought back by the BMW dealer in California under the California lemon law. I recently read about 1M owner who is on original clutch still at 220kms. At least the clutch has potential to last a long time lol I don't expect my car to be anywhere near as reliable as a Honda. |
High mileage '07 E93 6spd 328i here. Bought it for cheap at around 195k ~6 months ago, about to hit 200k. Almost every motor and trans-related gasket was leaking except for the head and RMS. Got all those done almost immediately after purchase. 6 new plugs and leads. Replaced serpentine belt, tensioner, tensioner pulley. Did the PS pump, reservoir, and reservoir lines. All four struts were blown and pissing oil, got those swapped out for coils. The hydraulic bushings in the front tension arms recently cracked, replaced both arms entirely including new ball joints. All four LED tail light tubes broke, requiring four new tail light assemblies as the LED tubes aren't serviceable. Replaced entire rear parking brake mechanism as old ones were seized, but having issues with it again. Replaced the A-pillar roof seal as the previous one was old and brittle causing water to leak in from the A-pillar roof joint area. Bought the car as it was pretty dirt cheap from an old Hungarian lady who taught Zumba and really just wasn't appreciating the car. Was able to overlook all the deficiencies because I really wanted a convertible and the roof mechanism was and continues to operate flawlessly sans needing a roof alignment at the stealership soon. Got a 2-stage polish and the car looks like it's been driven barely a fraction of what it's actually done. Still drives very well and shifts without any issues. Reliable? Depends on how you define reliable. If poorly-designed wear-and-tear items continuously breaking down constitutes to a car being unreliable (i.e. PS reservoir, water pump), then you won't like BMWs. |
How much was all that work akinari ? |
My first car was an 2009 335i Coupe, Alpine White on Black. It was a fun car but it was plagued with issues. My only regret was not learning how to work on my car faster. I used to pay this mechanic by my house to do work on it and boy was I getting ripped off. I only owned the car for a month and a bit. Put on 7000 KM in that time frame. Spent $2k basically in maintenance. Ignition coils went bad on Cylinder 3-4-5-6, the first time I got the misfire I was stressing as I knew nothing about cars at all. I paid this mechanic $230 for one ignition coil. The coil alone costs $30-40 AND ITS THE EASIEST THING TO DO, sadly I never knew. Had a valve cover gasket leaking paid quite a bit as with getting some other stuff replaced. Anyways, I traded it in later as I put a down payment on a new house so I figured I'd buy my dream car, the M3. Well realistically my dream car was the F80 M3 but that would have been a bad financial decision so I opted out and got the E90 M3 instead. Just something about the Sedan is more appealing to me than the Coupe. I've owned the E90 M3 since September 2017. My ownership timeline - Not 100% accurate missing some stuff - Will include at end Spoiler! My overall experience with my E90 M3 has been great. The V8 sounds amazing, I've driven an F80 since I've purchased my E90 and even though the F80 is a good looking car and a powerful car, I didn't enjoy the driving characteristics of it. In my ownership of, I've never had a single CEL. When it comes time to selling the vehicle or replacing it in general it will be hard. |
I am glad to hear someone likes their BMW *phew* |
Just over two years with the S65 engine M3. Not a single issue, previous owners maintenance history showed no issues as well. Having said that it's not the daily so that most likely helps. I'll hang onto it for as long as I can or until I can afford to replace it with a 991 GT3/RS. |
I don't think I'll ever get rid of my e36. Its easy to work on, taken me on 20k worth of road trips, 20k of normal driving and plenty of track days. Yes it costs money. Fun things are expensive. I spend as much on snowboard trips as I do on maintaining this car. I spend twice as much on beer. I spend more on hotels. Its the way it is. Shitty cars that aren't fun cost money too. I wouldn't consider a new BMW though when I can buy an old one and poorly wrench on it, costs aside. |
Had an E30 but got fed up with the water leaks, oil leaks, vacuum leaks, leaking head gasket, etc... I then moved on to a reliable Merc. I'm ready for the punishment to resume. I want an old BMW again. |

If anyone is actually curious: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing This is my entire spreadsheet, for the two years that I have owned my 2002 E46 330ci. To be fair, I did a lot of preventative maintenance, less so when it broke. When I waited for it to be broken, it usually cost me more money than to have done it as preventative. Also, when I do any work on my car, I don't like to skip any steps, no matter how minuscule it could be. So a lot of the costs can be skewed by how thorough I was with the job (fix). After everything I've done to it, I would say it was worth it. This was proven to be when it performed exactly the way it should have, with no hiccups or a tow home from the Ridge. |
That is beautiful. |

Fun things don’t have to cost money, I’ve had my MR2 Turbo for 16 years and never once fixed anything on it that wasn’t regular maintenance based on mileage :) I should qualify by saying I’d like to own an older BMW one day though! |
its weird how bmw cars have so many issues while bmw bikes are like ultra reliable. Buddy of mine got a GS that he rode down to baja and back with no issues and already had like a 100,000kms on it. |

N54 is a great platform if you can do some of the work yourself, with a few bolt ons and quality gas its easy to hit 500 crank hp with 550 torque. All the power comes in at 3000 rpm any other platform that you can get to 500hp under 10k ?? |
