She's not going to learn to drive stick but would like a cute little 2dr coupe to run around in.

Its fine for a daily and the sake of having a BMW.

What does she drive now?

I can’t say I’ve driven an auto 128i, but I did get a loaner ‘16 328i auto while my 2006 325xi was in the shop a couple years ago and, despite more power, better chassis, etc. the auto just sucked all the engagement out of the driving experience.

I have owned a few E90s, all automatic (328i and 335d). I have also driven many F30 automatic BMWs, as well as gotten one as a loaner for a few days. I can say, without a doubt, even though the 8spd auto is faster, the overall numbness of the vehicle is apparent compared to the E82/E90 chassis. The road feel in the steering is numb in the F30, even in sport mode (sport mode just tightens it up for the most part IMO) compared to the older generation BMWs. Power in the F30 328/330i was better than the outgoing generation, but you didn't feel how fast you were going (which can be a good thing in terms of comfort, but can be a bad thing in all other terms of sporty driving).

It's no wonder people love BMWs from the "previous generation" (take that however you will). I can only imagine the E82 be even more fun to toss around versus the E90.

FYI Oil filter prices went up this year.. ~ $27 (taxes in) for a OEM BMW filter (for a M54)

The comparable filter from MANN (PN: 11427512300) HU 925/4 x, which is the OE supplier for BMW is $5 USD ~ $8 CAD.

Obviously, OE will always be about 1/2 less than OEM. But an OE goes for more than 3x less than OEM. That's insane.

OEM price is the same price as the MANN filter for me.

Also MANN owns WIX; and WIX filters are cheaper same quality.

I've expressed my distaste for all things pheonix yellow - especially the e46 m3s. So wow, I never thought I would appreciate a yellow BMW. Here's Speed Yellow

Is it the same Speed Yellow that Porsche has?

I stumbled across a Dakar yellow 1M and was wondering what it would look like in techno violet or laguna seca blue.

tofu1413 08-02-2019 03:57 PM

if you are racing tomorrow 5:30 might be a bit late since you need to tech in and its a vw fest this week so mission is gonna be packed, get there early and get a run or 2 in before all the mayhem. I doubt we will have more than 3 runs tomorrow. I will be leaving around 330-4

thanks !! The weather helped a bunch when it finally cooled off a bit around 9pm. All 3 of the N54s in my group hit personal bests. Fun night overall !

When I bought the car, Brian Jessel P/O but normal steel screws for the rear license plate. The heads are now stripped from me trying to take off the plate, so now my plate is on the car until I figure out how to remove.

All the BMW license plate hardware (chrome plated or steel) rust within a year. Little trick, break the plastic plate frame if you can get at least 2 of them off then bend your license plate and pop it off. If not, vice grips once the plastic frame is off.

E36 M3 was running normally but just throwing the occasional CEL. I knew something was up because everyone behind me at autox said my exhaust smelled like fuel. Since its a OBD1 I did the stomp test and got a "1222" code. Meaning it could be one of a million things hah. I knew something would eventually go haywire doing a OBD1 conversion to a S52. I've cleaned the MAF, checked for intake leaks with carb cleaner sprays (nothing), cleaned the ICV (again), checked the fuel lines, replaced the fuel filter (I had one laying around anyway) and nothing. I guess I gotta replace the one O2 sensor first then check injectors :\ .

Anyone else have/had a OBD1 bmw and encountered the same code?

westopher 08-12-2019 07:24 PM

What does 1222 mean specifically on OBD1? If you are OBD1, are you only running post cat sensors on your s52? Is the car misfiring at all? Or just seeming like it's running rich. I'm moderately knowledgable on the s52 but OBD1 conversion throws me into the fairly useless category.

S1 S2 08-13-2019 02:02 PM

It's finally time to break the piggy bank and look for some N54 Index 12 injectors :lol

I have the anodized black screws on the front of the car. Those haven't rusted. Its just the rear ones sadly.

I was only able to get one screw off. Someone said to try a dremmel and then use a flat head.

Apologies ahead of time for the vertical video, but a relative of ours may be trading in their 2011 E93 335i as it started making a weird sound in the engine bay. The dealer SA couldn't determine the issue without additional diagnostic charges but had told them that 3 temp sensors aren't getting any readings. I don't know anything about these cars but I would think that this sound and the sensors are separate issues? We may take the car off their hands if it isn't a serious issue; my E36M ownership has been pleasant so far so the thought of another BMW doesn't scare me quiet yet. Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing this sound? I'm thinking belts or pulleys? The water pump was changed recently for about $2k, I'm assuming thermostat(s) were also done but I haven't seen the invoice.

77civic1200 09-26-2021 05:59 PM

Hard to diag noises from a video, but there are some major oil leaks visible. The valve cover and oil filter housing both look to be leaking, there looks to be oil getting splattered onto the charge pipe from the belt, and the belt shows a glaze or wet spot that matched the rotational noise so it could just be that? but it also sounded a little grinding? so I would take the oil cap off and check the vanos units haven't started separating, when the bolts break and start backing out they rub on the cam bearing caps
