If this thread was made 10 years ago every post would be how it's Canada and they need to speak English working in customer service in canada. Based on the comments from people in Vancouver about this video I bet in 10 years everyone will be saying the customer is wrong for expecting customer service to speak english for them.

I don't know what it's like in Canada, but in Hong Kong all the grocery stores have self checkout, nearly all drug stores (equivalent to London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart) have self checkout... All fast food chains do as well. If you were to just stick to shopping at these places - and theoretically you could, because they cover all the basic essentials - you really don't need to interact with anyone.

I think it's totally fine when if someone thinks you need to know what they're saying, they'll speak your language if they can. Otherwise, speak whatever they're most comfortable with.

i'm not expecting tim hortons/shoppers etc as places to find the best customer service but the staff should say 'if it's okay i wish to discuss this with my colleague in another language'...seems like a courteous thing to do in a professional setting when you have a patron/client involved in a discussion trying to resolve an issue...but then again maybe before the video was rolling she was already being a massive cunt so in that case maybe i wouldn't gaf either

I’d like to know what happened before the video started... not that it excuses her level of aggression.
That said she didn’t say any racist names... so I’m not wholly comfortable attacking this from a “racist” angle, more like a rude or bitch level of 10... she ain’t smart to do this in a store and she obviously isn’t a good person but....... kinda stretching the boundaries a little on the whole nazi racist thing? Especially without knowing the full story (not that I believe it would help her case much).
I dunno maybe I’m just tired of online lynching in general tho... could be that apathy at play in my mind too.

For example they expect you to use the store provided bags. If you put your own reuseable bag on the check out side it will keep giving you an error (coz of the weight difference). Also after you scan an item if you just opt to put it in your backpack or bag it will give you an error, you have to place your scan item on the check out side. Also if an item is marked as clearance with a special discount most of the time the self check won't know it and will just scan the regular price. Have that happen several times at Wal Mart and we either have to go to customer service to do the adjustment and issue a refund or get the customer service agent there to manually change the price.
Self check in Wal Mart at least allow you to press the skip bagging option so you can just put your stuff directly into your bag, London drugs have no such options. Then you have people who have no idea how to use the self serve check out station and is just taking up everyone's time (IE superstore there is always someone who take ages at the self check out either coz they don't know how to use it or is buying 50 items at once and the rep there doesn't stop it coz clearly the sign said 12 item or less)

Don't gather evidence, don't give anyone a fair trial, just assume whatever you saw is legit... judge, jury and executioner.
This is a general statement, not necessarily about this particular video... also to act like it's nothing to "ruin someone's life" as if that's a fair trade or retribution for whatever happened. Should she be made to go to anger management classes? Write an apology letter to the employees? Banned from the store forever? Sure... but ruin someone's life cuz they yelled at someone? Yah okay, you're a great person too aren't you? MUCH better than that lady.

Well what do u think happened? I dont see any plausible scenario where those employees deserved that type of treatment. Its 2019, seems like the norm for you to be fired from your job if you go on a racist tirade and get caught on camera that's basically viral on social media. Innocent till proven guilty? Well theres a video viewed by millions that see her completely in the wrong, so maybe it's time for her to come out and tell her side and explain why she said those things.

I once saw some asshole speeding at 80km/h in a parkade and when I confronted him he said "I'm from China and I'm rich, I can do anything I want so fuck you" and I responded saying "If China is so great, why don't you go back to there? You're just some piece of shit endangering people's lives here asshole" ... am I racist? Or did I just respond to his bullshit justification in kind? If someone recorded me saying that to him but only the second half of the "conversation", then I'd have been all over social media too looking like a total racist right?

CBC radio had some interesting takes:
- A caller named Tyler, unironically near as I could tell, put forth the concept of a Chinese style social credit system in order to punish people for bad behaviour.
- Another caller didn't like how the video was posted to social media without the consent of those involved: the child, the employees, the woman, etc. While filming in public does not require consent, did anyone in the video really want the video posted or the inevitable backlash for the woman to occur?

When you work for a company and acts like that and it gets caught on video. Of course there gonna fire you. It's just bad business if you dont. It's the way it is nowadays.
I never said I was a saint or i do anything wrong. I lose my shit all the time but I dont take it out on anyone else. But I'm not the one on "trial" here, she is.
Imo, it becomes racists when you say "speak english in canada" when the lady clearly can speak English. Maybe not the best english but enough to be working a cashier job at Shoppers where she has to speak english to hundreds of people daily.

Canada has been a melting pot for decades. Even when I was in elementary school there were different languages spoken depending on where in Vancouver/Richmond you went.
People shaming people for speaking any language in any country in 2019 is just ridiculous.
