Auto start/stop gets annoying as fuck though, so I switch it off as soon as I start the car.

you must be able to permanently disable that? coding?

Ooh to clarify I mean auto start/stop when using ACC. Apparently, when ACC is on, and the car in front of you stops, it will stop to 0km/hr. If the car in front moves within 3 seconds, the R will start moving again. The time limit can be coded out along with coding in lane centering (instead of just lane assist) using OBDEleven.

Any manual Golf R/GTI owners with DAP have experience with ACC?

Any FK8 owners here have experience using the ACC?

Yeah, it can be done with VAGCOM/OBDEleven. If I had half a mind to buy OBDEleven, I'd probably up the eLSD sensitivity to the Golf TCR settings too.

But I never knew that ACC will do full stop out of fear of slamming into the car in front.

Second hand info, but a friend had a Golf R with DSG and ACC, he said the car mostly drove him home from UBC to Tsawwassen, he encouraged me to option for it if I was buying a Golf R(it was one of those cars on my short list).

Had a manual MK7.5 Golf R for 8 months.
The ACC worked well, didn't use it often besides trips across the boarder but it did slow down the car to keep the set distance and you don't really worry about gears because you're in 6th. I never had to have it slam on the brakes for me. What was super annoying is the lane assist, if you didn't signal it would try to pull you back in the lane you're changing from. Super annoying for previous BMW owners who don't know how to signal.

BIC_BAWS 10-24-2020 05:29 AM

I prefer manual cars but full stop and go ACC would probably entice me into a DSG.

To add a rare car to my want list: V60 or S60 Polestar. About the same cost as a Mk7.5 Golf R, but only 1500 produce worldwide, about 80 for US and Canada

I'm a manual transmission stickler and will usually recommend it but if you're looking at the golf R the DSG is probably the way to go. I test drove both when I was looking at upgrading my then speed3 to something newer. The DSG was surprisingly more fun. I also looked into tuning and apparently the manual golf R clutch will slip at stock powers and its more evident with tunes

VW driver assistance programs is kind of useless (for me at least in my golf)

Lane centering just bounces you around in the lane from left to right line

Adaptive cruise is ok on highway when following someone in loose traffic but someone cut you off or enter your lane get ready to be brake checked by your own car

Front collision warning etc is annoying and beeps for no reason

I feel as its more stressful using the assistance than just driving myself

Aw man, i really want a golf =(

Cost of housing here means i can't buy anything fun.

Manual MK7 PP GTI owner here. I have the DAP as well and used ACC once a few years back going from Hope to Kelowna. I basically found a person on the Coq and got behind him and set my distance and speed.

The car did the rest and it was really sweet as I just relaxed my legs and kept it in 6th. When the car needed to accelerate or slow down to keep the distance, shifting up/down would not interrupt the system either.

I don't believe I used lane keep assist on that trip as I didn't find it that helpful.

This was all done in clear perfect weather towards Kelowna. On the way back it was raining and got really foggy in the mountains so I did not use ACC . Hope this helps!

Not sure how it works with warranty, but OBDEleven will be able to solve that ping pong lane centering issue.

Damn I gotta test drive a golf r or any VW with DAP to recreate that being cut off condition. In the Corolla, it's not that bad, that said depending on traffic I have the distance set differently.

Front Collison warning would be annoying for me. I wouldn't say I tailgate but I drive closer than most cars will be comfortable with.

Side note, I test drove a Veloster N. Designed by the same guy who designed the E46 M3, I can say, the car is a riot!

1. The trunk button is dumb. It's integrated into the rear wiper blade - I couldn't even find it without the sales person. There's no trunk button inside the car. The trunk is dumb. It's a small opening but it's deep.

2. No ACC. Big con for a dual duty.

3. If I had my payout I probably would have bought it as an impulse buy.

4. Launching it without launch control kinda sucks. It doesn't build boost, so it kinda lugs.

5. The brakes are pretty good.

6. I haven't tried Golf R yet, but I imagine it would be a lot more refined or boring. The N is very brash and in your face. The off throttle cracks is nuts. I tried beating the computer in revmatching, no can do, computer revmatches sound crispy af - even into 1st. The materials in the N are nicer than the Golf R. (I really don't like the soft touch crap)

7. Suspension in N mode is stiff as fuck. I was literally bouncing in my seat.

8. Car in N mode/sport mode/normal mode is Cain magnet loud.

9. Seats are decent. It's basic, but no complaints with pain and such. No rear headroom. Fits me but it's still tight, I have maybe a hand gap of head room and I'm 5'8". Getting into the rear seats suck, BMW (e46) did it much better.

10. Torque steer in 1st is nuts. Would not recommend flooring it in 1st. 1st is basically unusable. I did manage to get the car to oversteer at around 5-6K rpm in 2nd. It has passing power without having to downshift, I never had to second guess a pass. Defs peppy.

11. Gearbox was very satisfying, very crisp and smooth. None of that crappy BMW crunchy shit.

12. Rear window visibility is non existent.

Maybe I missed it in the thread, but any particular reason you're wanting to buy brand new? Pretty much throwing away $10k+ right off the bat... and doesn't seem at least to me like you intend to keep it a super long time

320icar 10-25-2020 09:04 PM

Haven’t I been saying hot hatch since the beginning of this thread...

- Korean, Japanese, German, American
- rwd, fwd, awd
- 4 door, 2 door, hatch, wagon, 2 seater
- na v6, na flat 4, turbo flat 4, straight 6, v8, twin turbo v6 etc

I think a more simple streamlined wants and needs list is required

Also I still feel my post from the first page is relevant. Still feel like you’re over the map a bit

I always say I don't want to keep my cars for a long time, then I ended up keeping the 330 for 4 years LOL. Would have kept it for longer if it hadn't been written off.

Only reason for new or CPO is only for ACC + warranty. I talked to a friend that worked at many different branded dealerships. He said that if the car is intended to be used in a sporty setting (ie. Track), such as M Cars, P cars, FK8, etc, if any failures occur while on track (ie. Engine blowing up and you didn't money shift), it would be covered under warranty.

Yeah I was thinking about that, still feels like I'm all over the map as well. But now having driven the N, it's time to drive a RS LOL

Is the exhaust really that loud? From the video clip, other than the pops and farts, it doesn't sound obnoxious.

But gosh... I hate manufacturers intentionally adding those stupid pops and farts into the exhaust. If they were gonna do it, at least make it a driver-selectable mode that only affects the exhaust note (but don't tie it in with anything else like ECU maps / modes).

According to Albert Bierman (the designer), it crackles and pops because they wanted to spool the turbos between shifts, the crackles pops were just an added bonus.

I think it's loud enough to piss off neighbors. It's probably 40i loud, but the cracks is what is the loudest

if your brand new car has major mechanical failures within factory specs/modes it's probably not worth owning

what you are guaranteed is it hasn't been absolutely beat to shit or modified to the tits

JDMDreams 10-25-2020 10:13 PM

What about a type r then?? If you're looking at golf r and veloster n

320icar 10-25-2020 11:28 PM

Earlier in this chat he was dead set against a fwd ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ which I disagree with since most CTR’s with good drivers are faster than the RS on track lol

JHatta 10-26-2020 06:56 AM

Thanks for the honest review of the Velostar N. Looking forward to hearing about how the Golf R goes....I'm piggybacking off your work to look for a new car to lease for myself.

CTR's with good drivers are better than bad drivers in any vehicle.

IMHO, a sporty front drive car should definitely have an LSD since you are constantly unloading the drive wheels. At the very least some really sticky tires. My Fiesta is great when I'm using my RE71r's, but switching back for winter is a bummer, an LSD would go a long way in helping a less aggressive tire get traction (and make the car insane on RE's).

Bump. Put your money where your mouth is!
