i've bought pine mushrooms off facebook from foragers and never had any weird experiences, it's always been some older asian guy who goes out to the interior for a weekend and picks like a few hundred pounds.
now something i wouldnt do is buy cooked food off fb.. people are selling things like home cooked meals on there.. that seems a bit too risky to me.

i mean good for him, its hard to start a business when it comes to food because nobody wants to rent a kitchen when they are just starting out and barely have any orders.

You end up saving quite a bit if you're buying a few pounds of beef ribs or brisket this way.
Funny enough I tried to buy from this Steve guy locally at Car Free Day on Commercial last year, motherfucker always sells out early. Will try again this year.

Speaking of the smoked meat, I tried the sandwich while on vacay. It was... not great. I had to drown it in ketchup, mustard and some relish to make it palatable. Also, the pickle was sour AF! Had to throw that into the sandwich for it to be acceptable (I sliced it up). Now I know what Hobz has been complaining about.

Toward the very end of the winding road, there'd be a few houses with large industrial totes in their front yard. Only go when there are area openings. Actually, being native, that's almost every day, jbol.
I used to work at a fish processing plant for eons. Got to know a lot of indigenous folk. Best way to get really fresh fish was off a test fisherman I used to know. Test fishermen went out almost every day. Reported the number of fish they caught - where, when, and how much in a given time. DFO then decided, via the numbers and size of fish, among other things, if an opening was justified. Sadly, Captain Kirk (we called him that - his actual name was Kurt) passed away. Kinda cranky fellow, but he was really nice to me. Anyway...........

Speaking of Car Free Days, Burnaby is closing off Edmonds for a car free event. Not a big, but...........
This Sunday Noon to 5:00. This car free used to be big, but has since been on the smaller side. https://www.burnaby.ca/recreation-an...s/car-free-day
I remember New West had a good one at one point. It was quite successful years ago. It got to the point they had them way too often. Not special anytime you do that. I lost interest. Anyone been?

While I can say Ive eaten stuff like cookies/cake etc that have come from home producers thats probably as far as I would go. I would stick with low risk foods . Stuff that is typically sold at farmers markets etc and can be sold un refrigerated.
Im sure most of the time most of the people producing this food wont get anyone sick ( you will sure as shit hear about it when it happens ..homemade XO sauce a few years ago I believe). However Ive seen enough from people that have gone through the trouble to become legal and work in a shared kitchen to make me wonder how they didnt kill anyone from there homes. From poor hygiene to poor practices to shortcuts so many people out there are just ticking time bombs.
Its a tough spot for a lot of these small producers because getting into even a shared space is very expensive , hard to navigate the regulations , etc . Starting your own space from scratch way harder.
I think Ontario has licensed a home model where you can buy from people off Facebook that are doing this . I think its something like cottage based foods . Basically the risk is on the consumer . Still not something Id be super comfortable.
That being said Ive back packed all over SE Asia and eaten from places that didnt have proper hygiene etc the only time I ever really got sick was eating at a western hotel.
