Is that the loophole? Is that how he's allowed out of his "literally never gonna buy another car in my lifetime"?

Yes but...drug addiction is also an illness and most people don't choose to be addicted to crack (or most other drugs).

Back to the incident - that sucks that it happened and we should probably brace ourselves for more of this over time. Autism rates are now as high as 1 in 31 (that's using 2022 data - it was 1 in 150 kids back in 2000) for kids that are now 9 years old and while most cases are not severe we're going to see more autistic adults and teens as the years go on (while not having any kind of cure or better understanding of how to manage it).

We can't just lock up everyone that has autism b/c we're afraid that they might have an episode like this (as many comments advocate).

Ruh oh ! More retards !

This is why we should stop people from procreating without a license. You can’t just make a bunch of retards to then throw onto society. You should take a class and pass a course / testing to make sure your qualified.

No, but their handlers/parents can probably choose a better place for a day out than Richmond Costco.

Maybe their handlers/family screwed up and tried something that was too disruptive for them but what if this person has regularly been going as part of their therapy? What if the person doesn't have severe autism and this was way out of the norm for them?

I think too many people are jumping to "Their handlers are stupid" or "Lock this person up (along with people like them)" without knowing the person or situation.

Why are we getting more autistic people? Is it because people are having kids later in life?

So I’m being 100% serious here

Growing up does no one recall going to say, public pools or the mall etc. and there would be SEVERELY mentally handicapped people in groups presumably on like a day out etc. all wearing hockey helmets? Looking back presumably for preventing self harm? It wasn’t just Down syndrome etc. either

I remember going to public pools for swimming lessons or with school and every time we’d go there’d be groups of these people.

Don’t really see people out in public to that degree any longer. Could be because of education with whatever, fetal alcohol or testing prior to birth but this was a very common occurrence I vividly remember growing up

Hockey helmets ?!? Groups ?!?! That’s hilarious!! I’d pay money to see that shit nowadays. Anyone who can keep a straight face while watching them waddle around in a group with helmets on has a godly level of composure

VACCINES.

A lot of it is actually better reporting and better diagnostics. In the past we just called autistic people weirdos and retards and tell them to stop being retarded or being weird. Now we're identifying neuro issues more clearly and getting people help - could be as little as just teaching them coping mechanisms or just being aware of it.

There's still an upward trend excluding better reporting and diagnostics but no one really knows why - could be having kids later, could be environmental, or something entirely different.

Aside: My 4 year old niece is autistic - it's probably moderate autism - she's not potty trained, has very limited spoken vocabulary (like 20-30 words), and is quite a bit behind on her motor skills. In the past they would have said she's retarded and tossed her into the pile separate from regular society. Today she gets an occupational therapist that works with her to communicate and be more comfortable with change (amongst other things). The gov't gives her parents up to $20k/yr for this (up till the time she's 5 or 6 I think). There's been a LOT of progress since they got the therapist but there's still SOOO far to go.

It's still an enormous amount of work for the family even with that help - my SIL has chosen not to return to the workforce b/c of the effort it takes to manage and care for my niece. She's lucky as her husband makes a lot of money, it scares me to think of working class families who have to live through this.

If you wonder why your tax dollars don't seem to go as far nowadays it's because of stuff like this - they aren't treating my niece like she's a retard.

I remember that stuff - I would see it at Richmond Center/Square as a kid. It still happens today but without the helmets and less frequently as I suspect there are fewer of those people now (Down syndrome is largely gone from Canadian society).

A family friend has a child that has been diagnosed to be high functioning autistic since he was relatively young -- I'm gonna guess middle elementary school age.

He is high function, and when we interact, there are only certain minor quirks. He really does not like to be touched / have physical contact, esp if he wasn't expecting it. He may or may not look at you when you're having a conversation together. For the most part, since we are family friends, we never had any issues interacting with him.

During his high school years -- I can't remember if it was gr 10 or 11 -- he was getting teased / picked on by certain bullies. He had gotten into some fights as a result, and the high school had been extremely understanding because they knew about his condition, and he was the one being picked on. But one time, something really triggered him, and he ended up going on a violent rampage to destroy a good part of a classroom -- chairs, tables, shelves and stuff.

After the outburst, he was extremely sorry for the damage that he has caused. But at the time, I guess he really couldn't control himself when he got triggered by the bullies. His parents actually offered to pay for the cost of the damage repairs, but somehow the school admins did not take up on his parents' offer.

Of course, different cases in autism can vary widely. In the Costco incident, we do not know what might have triggered the person to snap. So assuming the person is autistic, I think it is inappropriate to make any judgement on what might have happened and whether the person's family / support worker should or should not have done.

Much of that was Down Syndrome, you want to know the somewhat dark answer as to why?

We have better medical screening nowadays. Doctors are better able to predict more accurately and sooner whether or not a child is at risk, thereby allowing the parent to abort the child.

By this we've essentially ridden ourselves of having children born as often with such conditions.

It's dark, but true.

Given the amount of retards still present at Costco i think the screening needs to be improved.

I was lined up just now and this young Asian woman runs her cart into the back of my leg. I hate that shit

I turn around and look at her.
She on her phone completely oblivious that she ran into me
I take her cart and shove it towards her. Scaring the shit out of her
She looks up confused
I said you ran your cart into me. Say you’re sorry
She said I’m sorry
I said say it again
She looks confused but says sorry again
I said say it again
Now she’s getting mad and she’s like why? how many times you want me to say sorry
I said enough times so you won’t fucking hit people with your stupid ass cart. Get off your phone you idiot
She gets scared and moves to another line
Old white lady behind me said I made her day

Yea I’m sure a lot of it has to do with pre-screening during pregnancy

Honestly who in their right mind would want the burden of dealing with that their entire lives?

You have to be some kind of special altruistic person to sign yourself up for that.

I've heard parents of DS kids describe them as being the most loving and compassionate of people, but damn, that's quite the task of having to take care of someone for the rest of your life, and have a plan for them thereafter.

The old news anchor Tamara Taggert has a severely disabled Down syndrome kid and I swear the way she trots him around seems like the type of person who’d intentionally have a kid to virtue signal

Her kid would have been well within the age of advanced screening etc. so she obviously opted to keep her pregnancy, some of her shit is extremely cringe whenever it pops up on social media etc.
