A lot of people who run e85 get ethanol content sensors. Simple in-line sensor

For people in East Van, the Shell on E.hastings/Victoria Dr. Has 93 octane now. They got rid of 89. Just 87/91/93 now.

So does 91 now contain up to 10% ethanol?

I thought Shell 91 always contained up to 10% e, it was Chevron 94 that had no e

So they got rid of 89/midgrade. 91 would be a mix of 94 and 87.

It was confirmed 0% ethanol in the second video (1:25 - 1:40) of the OP.

So is this a big thing for Shell now, move from 91 to 93?

so i just tanked up with 50L of shell 93 and did some logging versus my usual 94 chev fuel that i use. Exactly the same timing pulls across cylinders in the same gear with the same IATs. Ill do some more testing in the upcoming weeks to see if there is any kind of difference once the gas stations cycle through a few tanks of 93. So far, no difference

Are these sensors ethanol specific?

I ask because I often check fuel alcohol content as part of my driveability diagnosis, and Shell 91 always had closer to 10% in my experience despite supposedly containing no ethanol. Chevron 94, on the other hand, usually had less than 5%.

Can't be anymore if they did not install new tanks. 91 has to be a mix of 94 and 87.

What car are you testing with?
Are you also doing any tuning or just switching fuel and doing the logging?

If this fuel is legit, tuners should be able to make decent power gains. But I assume a tune will be required to really notice big gains?

He has the FBO tuned 335i

You are correct that you’d need a pro tune to really grasp the change. But if I loaded my chev 94 tune (not wmi) into my FBO focus RS I know my timing curve, normal knocks on load, my ignition and octane adjust ratios. Should be pretty clear on datalogging whether it’s way worse, way better, or for all intents and purposes the same

2010 bmw 535xi Stage 1+ 93oct Tune @ 16 psi

This tune always has timing pulls across all cylinders but sometimes i splash 10 L of E85 and it quickly brings back all the cylinders to zero within 10 mins of driving.

This log was 50L of 93 and i drove for about an hour before logging.
the results were IDENTICAL.

Lets give it a few more weeks and ill log again and see if there is less timing pulled.

This guy isn't re-inventing the wheel here. More octane is better when you consider 94 vs 91. Yes ethanol has its benefits for performance but not at only 10%.

So the 93 with 5-10% ethanol, vs 94 no ethanol should be extremely close, you'd not know the difference with the margin of error.

I'm just going with my butt dyno, when I filled my M3 with the 93 with ~1/4 tank Shell 91 left in it, the car felt better and the hesitation was one.

I am at 1/2 tank left right now and it feels like some of the hesitation is back. I plan on giving it another tank or 2 to completely flush out the old 91 and see if it's anything.

I hope it's not a placebo or just some perfect running conditions. I don't plan on tuning the car ever (its got enough power) but running perfect vs the car hesitating on a stock tune is still worth the premium imo.

You guys have some calibrated butts. I add 5psi to my car and I call it almost unoticeable despite being 70hp. Lol. Maybe because it’s so loud my senses are saturated. Lol.

Well, in my case I’m looking at datalogging, not butt dyno. But also since I drive the same car every day you tend to notice even small changes

When the car pulls timing the bogging that happens is very obvious.

Car is heat sensitive and fuel sensitive even just stock tune.

Was in Mission yesterday, and both Shell stations there are still running the 87 / 89 / 91 combo. I filled the tank with their 91 gas anyway, but I didn't particularly notice any discernable difference from the mundane driving that I was doing.

I had mixed bag from different shell stations. Noticed newer stations seem to have better fuels.
