^ I'm not a fan, have watched a bit of it the past couple days and was trying to kind of figure out some of the rules as I went, but am curious what makes you say that?

But Fuji is up 21-0 and there's basically no hope for Canada to beat them. That didn't stop them from headbutting and striking at their opponents.. Like not "tough stuff" but actual strikes. Two Canadians were injured, and both looked REALLY bad. First one they didn't catch on camera, but the second one was a headbutt to the shoulder, and she just broke her arm with a dirty headbutt, so it was just hanging as she limped off the field.
Canada scores a 'try' in garbage time.. she's struggling to get the ball over the line, and this girl comes in and just WALLOPS her across the face with her forearm. Surprised she didn't KO her. And that was the end of the game.
It's just gross... Allowing hitting with your head is bad enough in sports with helmets, but why are they letting them do it without them? All while you're up 21-0? No thanks
Edit: Watching Japan vs US now, let's see if these teams are as dirty
Edit: LOL the Americans are like 50% bigger than the other team on average. This doesn't seem fair
But no strikes or headbutts so far
OK rugby isn't so bad, just the Fijian team is

Rugby Sevens is totally different from Rugby Union. Personally, I'm a big a fan of Rugby Union. Those guys are warriors and make NFL players look like a bunch of wusses, but in general is just more tactical. Obviously, the fact that there are less players on the pitch and less time on the clock means the approach will be different to RU.

I have probably only watched about hour total of Olympic coverage so far and I don't think I have seen any men's events. Is it just coincidence on my part or has CBC been showing more women's events?

K ... about to throw a bomb into the conversation ... might be politically incorrect but here goes.
Why are certain ethnicities naturally better at certain sports? Watching the 100m ladies and no surprise, all the top performers are African/black. Same observation with men.
Why are there hardly any black/African swimmers?
Is it something about their particular physiques?

Might have to change thread title......... It's no longer Tokyo Olympics. It's now Tokioh Olympics.
On a side note, good on Emma Twigg winning gold for New Zealand. This is the 34 year old's fourth Olympics with no gold to show for it. She finally did it! Finished well ahead of the rest.
I was watching the highlights on the CBC app (liking it so far). The women do it again by winning gold in the women's 8 rowing. I listened to our national anthem as our flag was being raised and was like, wth? So tinny sounding - top heavy, no bass or mid bass...... I listened to it more closely the second time around and it is a good rendition. Good choice, Canada. I believe we get to submit the version of the anthem and if it passes the IOC it is played at the Olympics.
As a former band leader, I always liked the Bray, band arrangement. Simple, robust and full without too much flourish. Anyway, did you know the composer of O Canada was a french canadian music teacher...... https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-he...-o-canada.html
LOL at the russians....... lupol, so they can compete in the olympics. ROC https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/26/sport...rnd/index.html

I watch NBC and it's almost all men's events
They're going to show who gets the highest ratings, and if the men are winning more, they'll probably get shown more.

Is it something about their particular physiques? | Less about ethnicity, and more about physical attributes, environment, training quality. Certain ethnicities have typical traits (but with a range) like commonly tall Dutch people or heavy Pacific Islanders, but with training and everything going right, anyone can win at any time.
Koreans are great archers because they have a strong archery program, not because they're Korean. Canadians do well in ice hockey because it's part of their culture, and many hockey players are all different ethnicities.

I once met a Kenyan who’s full time gig is competing in various running events all over the world. He did everything from rare obscure races in fuck town nowhere to triathlon in major cities and the Olympic. As long as there is a $ purse to winning he is there.
Running literally life where he is from. He has been running since he was little kid. To and from school, to work, to the market etc. He can run faster than most people he meets in first world country while wearing flip flops. He’s been “training” every day since he was 5. Just like how sports can lift communities out of poverty in North America. My guess is it the same in African countries?

at a high level, poor people sport vs rich people sport
running requires nothing; you can practice anywhere
sports like swimming, tennis, rowing, etc. require facilities and equipment, which is $$$

Many African runners also live-in/train-in high altitude conditions. When they run at sea level it makes them superhuman.

Nike has opened a high altitude training center in Colorado. So US runners can train like the Kenyans. https://www.ussportscamps.com/runnin...s-running-camp

I would imagine being extremely poor and seeing a way out would give you a drive that you just can't replicate if you come from more favorable conditions.

I'm liking the addition of the mixed men/womens events. It was fun to see the the different strategies in Swimming's Mixed Medley, you can't really tell where anyone is going to end up until just at the very end.

I though that in the past, the 100m dash was one of the last events because it was so hyped. This year, it was done so early.
